Briefly looking at NLA references, there seem to be various choral sections, as well as calisthenics and dancing, at least in 1945. Is it possible that Ballarat and Geelong were 'heats' culminating in a final in Melbourne? Also noticed an entry for the "Sun-News-Pictorial" Aria.
