I am interested in a mishap which occurred first Sunday in 1849 when a ship/dinghy from Victor overturned as it was returning the Master , Captain Kirkus to his barque after church. All on board drowned including " a nephew of Captain Robert DAVISON of "Posthumous". I am very interested in just who this nephew was. The Geelong Advertiser 4th December 1849 gives no actual identity. Can anyone point me to his identity. I have searched the BDM to no avail. TIA Lynne
Hi Lynne - Capt Kirkus, William Farmer aged 18 and William Fowler, aged 40 all died on 4 Dec 1849 and are buried in unmarked graves at the Eastern cemetery. The Geel Addie indicates that 3 crew drowned. Now the 2 Williams' above may or may not be "3 of the crew". The 3rd man may not have been recovered hence no mention of another burial OR his body may not have been recovered until some time later - hence another date of death other than 4th Dec. My suggestion would be to look at the Inquests of some or all of the above and see what connections can be found. kind regards, Pam Jennings ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynne Tocher" <lintoch@pnc.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 21, 2009 10:41 AM Subject: [GEELONG] Drowning >I am interested in a mishap which occurred first Sunday in 1849 when a >ship/dinghy from Victor overturned as it was returning the Master , Captain >Kirkus to his barque after church. also check later newspapers and those where he originated from, sometimes they copy or include notices such as this in their papers but can be months later. Some newspaper articles even have for instance 'london papers please copy' on the article. If the regatta was postponed you could try and see if any records exist for it or even a report or a sailing club if it held it. good luck linda
