    3. It seems nothing to do with brick laying at all. http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/8750959?searchTerm=%22the+bricks%22 The (Hobart) Colonial Times, Tuesday 14 July 1840 explains - "The Bricks."-The terms "Swells and Bucks" are long since defunct-"Dandy and Exquisite" are no more-the "Corinthian" is in the shaded, and "Peep O'Day Boys" are extinct. All these things are, by aid of the Schoolmaster anroad, converted into "Bricks." Hobart Town is alive with "Bricks!" The bearers of this honorable title give their war-cry, "BRICKS." If engaged in breaking a window, or running away from the charlies, they cheer each other on with the shout of "BRICKS." The rallying cry, when they emerge from the holes and corners in which they esconce themselves, till their masters have passed, is "BRICKS." Engaged in disturbing an audience-annoying a respectable female-getting "bousy", or other gentlemanly recreations, still the cry is "BRICKS." Surely their heads must be composed of "Bricks." Their person ought to be as hard as "Bricks," to enable them to endure, what so frequently happens to them, in getting kicked like Bricks. We would recommend them to reform their manners like "Bricks;" for if the persist in their present ungentlemanly conduct, these "Gentle Bricks" may meet with some study fellow, who, without hesitation, will say - "BRICKS, HAVE AT YE ALL !" and give them such striking proofe of his dissatisfaction, as will make them run, and sing out, "like Bricks!"

    3. They could have also been the very early forerunners of Bodgies & Widgies!! Perhaps some of their great great grand children in fact were Bodgies or Widgies Regards, Chris -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-geelong-district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-geelong-district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Val Burge Sent: Sunday, 25 October 2009 7:51 PM To: aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Who or what was "The Bricks" Sounds like Suzie's ad was an invitation to a new years day booze up :) Val ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara OConnor" <maurie777@ozemail.com.au> To: <aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 25, 2009 7:21 PM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Who or what was "The Bricks" > It seems nothing to do with brick laying at all. > > http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/8750959?searchTerm=%22the+brick s%22 > > The (Hobart) Colonial Times, Tuesday 14 July 1840 explains - > "The Bricks."-The terms "Swells and Bucks" are long since defunct-"Dandy > and > Exquisite" are no more-the "Corinthian" is in the shaded, and "Peep O'Day >
