    3. Hello list, I have a SHARP Robert born 1846 Scotland. Parents SHARP James and Charlotte (nee HOWIE) Robert married WALTON Mary Ann at Christ Church, Geelong 1866. Four children were born in Geelong between 1866 and 1872. Then this family pops again in Sandridge( Port Melbourne) with a further 4 children being born under the name of SMART to Robert and Mary Ann WALTON Is there anyway I can find out why the name change, is it due to having to move from Geelong quickly for some reason and changing his name.? Robert and Mary Ann died as SMART in 1887 and 1888, in Port Melbourne. Buried at Melbourne Cemetery under the name of SMART. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Pat

    3. Hello Patricia, Many years ago I helped a young couple who appeared to have an identical problem.I can't remember the names: I was researching something else when they told me of their problem at the Victorian PRO search room at Laverton. The difference was, that they had a family story that the father had accidentally caused the death of another, and fled and changed his name. They did not know his original name, so could not find births of the first four children, nor the marriage of the parents We solved that one by searching the Victorian Police Gazette from the birth of the fourth child until the birth of the fifth (new surname) child. We searched for (usually on the front page of the fortnightly produced bulletin) "Wanted for murder". We did find an entry for the time and followed the notice through several issues. The clincher was: "Thought to be travelling with wife and four children." We took the name to the (then) microfiche index of births, and there were the children, as named. Bingo. In those days one could not search by "mother's name",(no CDs) which these days would easily find the previous family and name, but would mean you would not have the "Victoria Police Gazette" information, only the puzzle of changed names Just a thought.
