Hello Listers. In the Ararat Chronicle July 1918 appears a poem by Kathleen WALKER of East Geelong, titled "From a Little Bush Town" The town in question is Dunkeld, the poem mourning the loss of twenty local boys in WW1. It's a really good lyrical piece of poetry, not "doggerel" or forced. Of course, this is too early for the famous poet Mrs Kath Walker, then a tiny child. But, does anyone know who she was? Intrigued. Regards Ada Ackerly

http://victorianwarmemorials.info/index_D.htm lists Dunkeld War Memorial, and links to photographs of the four sides of the monument, showing all the names. Photo No.6 gives the names of WW2 men. BTW, younger poet Kath/Kathleen Walker/Oodgeroo Noonuccal was born in 1920, so definitely not her. Cheers, Barbara
Hello Listers, One verse: > Oh, it's autumn sweet this morning, > And the red heath all a-flower > And magpies sing where the red gums fling, > A diamond, wind-tossed shower; > There's a mist-wreath over Mt Sturgeon, > And emerald green is the grass. > There is magic sweet where some-body's feet > Never again may pass. As I wrote to Lorraine Phelan, she seems to have a special affinity for Dunkeld where there are still some giant red gums (or were, when I was last there 20 years ago) Regards Ada Ada Ackerly wrote: > > Hello Listers. > > In the Ararat Chronicle July 1918 appears a poem by > > Kathleen WALKER of East Geelong, titled "From a Little Bush Town" > > The town in question is Dunkeld, the poem mourning the loss of twenty > local boys in WW1. > > It's a really good lyrical piece of poetry, not "doggerel" or forced. > > Of course, this is too early for the famous poet Mrs Kath Walker, then a > tiny child. > > But, does anyone know who she was? > > Intrigued. > > Regards Ada Ackerly > > >
