    3. Hello to the list. A recent search of the NLA Australian Newspapers has found this piece of information "The Argus (Melbourne) 8 October 1859 At the Police Office this morning, a Mr. Thomas Martin appeared before the Bench, to answer a charge of abduction, in having married a young girl named Zipporah Simmons, daughter of Mr. Simmons, innkeeper, Waurn Ponds, without his consent, she being under 17 years of age. The Bench, consisting of the Mayor and Police Magistrate, ordered the case to be adjourned for adjudication before the Newtown and Chilwell Bench, the offence having been committed within its jurisdiction. The charges against the Rev. Charles Hodges, the officiating clergyman, and Owen Johns and William Lambie, as accessories before the act, were also ordered to stand over for disposal before the same Bench." This unapproved marriage is recorded - 27th Sep 1859 at Clarendon Street, Chillwell. I continued searching but was not able to find any report of a subsequent case, or cases. Several deaths are recorded that could be the above Thomas MARTIN but I have not bought the certificates.... What could they tell me when I have few details. Zipporah SIMMONS is the registered mother of 10 children, father James Francis TRIBOLET, the first born 1862. Zipporah Simmons and James Francis TRIBOLET married 1891. Some of their descendants could be TRIBOLET, STEWART, STRICKLAND. Does anyone have any answers? Colleen R.

    3. Hi, Wonder what did happen to Thomas Martin, he could have been imprisoned, hounded out of town, have you th eoriginal marriage certificate ? Thismight help sort out when he died if it has his parents names on it. Nice family that Zipporah had. Perhaps she always considered herslef legally married and only married again after the death of Thomas Martin. regards Robyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Colleen Robinson" <ceedeed@dodo.com.au> To: <aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 20, 2009 1:17 PM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Newtown & Chilwell Bench - Thomas MARTIN - ZipporahSIMMONS. > Hello to the list. > > A recent search of the NLA Australian Newspapers has found this piece of > information > > "The Argus (Melbourne) 8 October 1859 > > At the Police Office this morning, a Mr. Thomas Martin appeared before the > Bench, to answer a charge of abduction, in having married a young girl > named Zipporah Simmons, daughter of Mr. Simmons, innkeeper, Waurn Ponds, > without his consent, she being under 17 years of age.
