Hello Listers, Today I found a petition in 1856 for a Pound site at LITTLE RIVER The Surveyor suggested that the pound should be set up at "Rothwell" Locals suggested Matthew WATT would be suitable as the Poundkeeper. 71 signatures, all very neatly and clearly written! Addresses Little River, Bareacres, Villamanta Station Peak, Mouryong (sic), Irish Flatt, Violet Grove, Bay View Farm, Beach, Bay Station, Duck Ponds, Station Peak, Sniphill, Rothwell, Anakie. Treasury Inwards Correspondence, VPRS 1207/P000 unit9, item 56R/2731 GEELONG: VPRS 1207/P000 unit 8 item 56R/2256 Mr William GARLICK, who claimed to have arrived in Geelong in 1843, and claimed to be "well known" there, in 1856 learned that the mail contractor Geelong/Steiglitz had thrown up his contract, and he asked that he be considered in lieu of the resigning contractor for £300 p.a. VPRS 1207/P000 unit 7, item 56R/2008. 19 March 1856 A letter from Michael LENNET of 22 Ryrie St Geelong. He uses a scribe to write his letter, saying he had purchased Geelong land and seeking his deeds, the price having been paid, admitting he was a poor man, "uneducated, but I can write my name". And proceeded to sign at the end of the application: and quite well, too! Regards Ada
Hi Ada - brilliant stuff!! I have made sure that Little River His Soc know about this find! Recently I have been calling up Crown Land files for a particular project, but as I make my way through each box, I am finding amazing petitions, plans, letters etc that are included in the same way you are finding them! Any petition that I find I am adding names from it to a database that will be eventually on the Geelong & District Pot Pourri website. Keep up the great work Ada! regards, Pam Jennings ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ada Ackerly" <aackers@alphalink.com.au> To: <aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 26, 2010 11:59 PM Subject: [GEELONG] Treasury Gems: Little River, Geelong. 1856 Hello Listers, Today I found a petition in 1856 for a Pound site at LITTLE RIVER The Surveyor suggested that the pound should be set up at "Rothwell" Locals suggested Matthew WATT would be suitable as the Poundkeeper. 71 signatures, all very neatly and clearly written!
