    3. I'm old enough to remember rods, poles and perches as units of land measurement - but so old I've forgotten what their relationship was Carol At 06:34 PM 14/01/2010, you wrote: >Hi Pam, >Think it is the old measurements, fractions of an "Acre" of land, >that is "Rood" and "Perches" >(think that is how you spell it). >Kind regards, Sue (Tropical North Queensland, Australia) > > > > From: "Pam & Trevor Jennings" <pje23513@bigpond.net.au> > > > > Wonder if anyone knows what the phrase 'R & P' means in > correspondence in Land Files at PROV? > > thanks for any suggestions, Pam Jennings > > > >_________________________________________________________________ >Video chat with Windows Live Messenger Learn how >http://windowslive.ninemsn.com.au/messenger/article/870686/video-chat-with-messenger >~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >For on-line indexes and information on Geelong and District >http://zades.com.au > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-request@rootsweb.com with the word >'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Back in my schooldays of learning by rote Rods and Perches came into the scheme of things but I can't remember now what it was that we recited over and over. But I do recall that the valuation of a house we used to own in Sydney years ago had the lot measurements in Chains & Rods/Perches. Google found this for me - "There were 12 inches to the foot, 3 feet to the yard, five yards and one foot and six inches to the rod (or pole or perch), 4 rods (or poles or perches) to the chain, 10 chains to the furlong, and 8 furlongs to the statute mile." Presumably we used the British 'statute mile' - it differed in length in Scotland and Ireland - but you will have to do your own conversions if you want to make comparisons in current measurements. My mind is too befuddled with years of converting old recipes. But I do have a collection of tape measures with inches on one side, centimetres on the other, which is so handy - I still think in inches. Cheers Barbara
