    3. Hi Folks, And a small lesson / reminder for anyone looking at my favourite VPRS 16171 parish plans (or any parish plans etc. for that matter) - the SIZE of each allotment of land is shown in numbers such as 0.2.0 or 320.0.0 or 549.2.3 - these are all the standard notation of a.r.p. which stands for acres, roods and perches. 640 acres (mainly found in country areas) was the traditional square mile. When surveying the parishes, most allotments were a uniform part of 640 acres - i.e. 640 acres, 320 acres, 160 acres, 80 acres etc. On the Bellarine we had a lot of 320 acres and 80 acres, particular in the Bellarine Hills where it was more intensive farming - rich soil ideal for crops. Obviously a river boundary or similar meant that you never got a "perfect" part of 640 acres, but inland where there were no geographic obstructions, you'll find that many of the north-south and east-west roads were the boundary of the earlier larger allotments. A rood was 1/4 of an acre A lot of town lots were surveyed at 0.2.0 - i.e. 2 roods or the traditional 1/2-acre block! Regards ......... 3. Hello Pam, Not knowing the context of the "R and P" I am at a loss to understand why Roods and Perches is considered the answer, I only think that solution would apply if there was a measurement, e.g. "44 acres R & P " though in my experience the Lands Dept were VERY PRECISE when they mentioned measurements, and this, I think, would not be done! Was "R&P" 1. in the body of the correspondence (so, what was it next to?), 2. as a code at the top of the page where the filing information was entered? 3. or other? In the Lands Dept R was sometimes used for: Registration of a lease Revaluation of improvements and other things, and for Roads and Reserves And P was used as a prefix to "surveys" usually with a date following, though not always So.... maybe.... "Registered and Surveyed"??? or, simply, "Registered and Paid"??? One really needs the context, otherwise, we are just guessing.
