What is now Sydney Parade and Sydney Avenue that intersect near the hospital was Sydney Place North/South and Sydney Place West/East (see the Geelong PROV map site from Susie's earlier email re new site) You can see the names on each block .. not sure of date of map but is early as hospital is called 'hospital and benevolent asylum' and it was this from circa 1853 to 1924. Hi Folks, The PROV map that Carollyn was referring to ........ on PROV site "Search within a series" and enter [VPRS] 16171 and for all / any field enter 5311 - this will bring up the map of Geelong. Unfortunately the "year" is part of the map that has torn off - just know it was 29.3. xx ! Although it is a "working plan" with a lot of more recent notations it is probably 19th century. Anyway, it very clearly shows the name change from Sydney Place North and South to Sydney Parade, and Sydney Place East and West to Sydney Avenue. This clears up a discrepancy between information in Hotels of Geelong and the Streets of Geelong! Chris - your best option is to find Directories for just prior to the death of your relative in 1883 or look at rate books for the period. Have fun ..........
