    3. Hi Folks, I learnt today of the passing of Vivian HILL. Vivian was not only the husband of the late Ruth HILL, a prominent historian and researcher in our region, but was also responsible for the wonderful Geelong Lawyers' Collection. http://www.deakin.edu.au/library/geelonglawyers/index.html This amazing piece of work is probably best explained with a quote from the web site ... =================================================================== The Geelong Lawyers' Collection is a rich primary source relating to individual lawyers and legal institutions in Geelong, Australia. The collection aims to preserve the history of the legal profession in Geelong and to stimulate research and publication. The collection was established in 1994 by Mr Vivian Hill, with the support of Deakin University's School of Law and the Geelong Law Association. It includes interviews, biographies, photographs, certificates and other documents relating to the Geelong legal profession from 1840 to the present. The collection currently holds material relating to approximately seventy Geelong lawyers and legal associations. This number will grow as further material is lodged. =================================================================== Vivian was also a wonderful support to Ruth with her work for the Geelong Historical Society and their journal the "Investigator". I spent time with Vivian just a couple of weeks ago and he was also at our Bellarine Historical Society Christmas dinner. All I can say is that he's where he needs to be - he was missing Ruth so much. Vivian's funeral is this Thursday, 1.00 pm, at St Mary's, Geelong. Regards ......... Susie Z

    3. To anyone on the list. I have joined a local, fairly new, Heritage Group. We have a collection of old newpapers, and clippings. They have that very musty smell common to newspapers that have not been cared for. Does anyone have any clues of what we should do to their storage box/boxes to eradicate this odour. Any advise will be gratefully accepted. Colleen.

    3. Colleen, you could try putting carb soda in a container in the boxes, it seems to absorb most smells. 3. Hi Colleen, You don't mention where you live (which State) which could help, as well as a few more details on the collection you mentioned. There are really two issues - PRESERVATION and USE PRESERVATION You need to protect the originals you have as well as making sure they don't contaminate other items in your collection. Some good advice has been given and you can also get advice from places like your State Library, Museum, State Records Office, Australian Archives, RHSV etc. There are also grants available from many different sources which can assist with doing this. Also, everyone, no matter whether they have a museum collection or private family items, should download all the volumes of "reCollections: caring for collections across Australia". This boxed set was provided free to all museums in Australia in 1998 or could be bought for about $200-300. BUT you can download the entire collection free from ... http://archive.amol.org.au/recollections/index.htm USE Jenny also gave the best advice for being able to actually USE the newspapers and clippings - copy / scan / photograph them - print them for TWO reasons - one being archival for storing if you aren't able to properly preserve the originals, and the other for "everyday" use and display. You don't mention if the clippings are loose or pasted in some sort of display book - obviously different treatment will be required. The grants mentioned above are also available for copying such items. Hope that helps ...........
