    3. Hi Folks, Angela has kindly sent me the information on the various winners and after a bit of intensive thinking I'll work out the best way to present it on the Geelong & District web site. If anyone has any relevant photos or snippets re different winners I'm more than happy to work out the best way to include them in the web page. It certainly was an interesting topic on the mailing list! Regards ........ 3. Thanks to all who responded to my initial query. I found a copy of the book by Barbara MacKenzie and found the information I was after. I'll send it to this web site so it can be included there somewhere for research purposes. I've also sent copies to the Geelong Eisteddfod committee as well for their archives. Seems there were indeed Geelong and Bendigo Sun Arias along with the better known Ballarat competition. Results for the Geelong Sun Aria start in 1925 and finish in 1933 and lists the first three placegetters. (no records for 1929) Bendigo Sun Aria runs from 1925 - 1930 (not available) and then from 1931 to 1935 (or 36) there's either a missing date or they have listed additional placegetters. The results listed in the book's appendix are (and most of these go up to 1965 when the book was written unless as mentioned above): The Sun Aria Royal South Street Competition The Sun Aria Geelong The Sun Aria Bendigo The Sun Aria City of Sydney Eisteddfod Australian National Eisteddfod Shell Aria Canberra Commonwealth ABC Vocal Competition The Mobil Quest The Dame Nellie Melba Bequest Scholarship Many thanks again, Angela PS: If anyone would like a copy of the scanned results please feel free to ask.

    3. Hi Angela I found details of my aunt Anne Harvey's win in 1832 in The Australian Musical News - Ballarat library had some old copies in its Australiana Research collection. Also there are lists of winners in the back of a book called Singers of Australia author Barbara McKenzie. There are Sun Aria lists for Geelong 1925-1933, Bendigo and Sydney and a Shell Aria for Canberra. Royal South street from 1924. 3. Briefly looking at NLA references, there seem to be various choral sections, as well as calisthenics and dancing, at least in 1945. Is it possible that Ballarat and Geelong were 'heats' culminating in a final in Melbourne? Also noticed an entry for the "Sun-News-Pictorial" Aria. A search of the National Library itself might be worth while. Cheers Barbara

    3. Thank you to those who have replied so far to my query and thanks for the tip about the NLA digitised newspapers. I started off originally looking for the winner specifically in1930. The Ballarat records show that H Norman Menzies from Geelong won the Sun Aria that year in Ballarat, however a Florence Erickson also claims to have won the Sun Aria that year in her (auto)biography. I was wondering whether she won the Geelong version instead. My research has expended and I would now love to be able to compile a complete list of Geelong Aria winners, there needs to be one somewhere for future reference - but these thing have a habit of doing that don't they? 3. A search for "sun aria" on the NLA digitised newspapers site produces 159 references - including one dated 1945 which says, in part, "there are 64 nominations for the Marjorie Lawrence special prize". Cheers Barbara

    3. Hi Craig, I can add a little to this discussion - I did the research on the Globe Theatre in Winchelsea and have the following notes re Marjorie LAWRENCE (her father and brothers built the Globe Theatre for her) .......... Marjorie ... "failed to gain a place in the Ballarat South Street competitions, but at Geelong in 1928 won the Sun Aria contest." Sadly Marjorie was one of our locals who was better known overseas than she was in Australia. But she never forgot her roots - although she appeared in concerts in the major cities in Australia on some of her return visits, she always held her first concert in Australia at the Globe Theatre in Winchelsea. And she insisted that apart from a few seats reserved for members of the press, ONLY locals could attend her Winch concerts. She was VERY popular with the locals and ALWAYS made time to visit the school kids, family and friends, and generally made time to join the choir for Sunday service in the St John's Church of England in Deans Marsh where she was born. It's nice to hear of someone with a world standing who made such an effort with her "home town". Oh - just read more of my notes - the 1928 Sun Aria Contest was held at the Palais Royal in Moorabool Street. Regards .............. 3. Hello Angela and Pam. I was very interested in the enquiry re the Geelong Aria/Sun Aria. My late mother was Ailsa MacKenzie and she competed for the Sun Aria in both 1932 and 1933 and won ithe competition in 1933 which was held in Geelong. I believe the organisers of the Sun Aria were also seeking names from the early days of that competition as their records were not complete either. I do have some press clippings from her scrap book that I could look up that may assist you if you wish. My mother said that there were heats ?in both Ballarat and Geelong back then. Ailsa was born in Newtown, Geelong [1914] and her family was very large with her father born in Darlington of a very large family also. The MacKenzies have connections to families from Cressy, Barrabool Hills and Melbourne. A further point of interest is that she was a cousin of famous singer John Brownlee who I believe also came from Geelong. If I can be of further assistance please feel free to contact me. Regards, Craig [MacKenzie] COOK ad family there a Geelong

    3. Hi Angela - what a great project to undertake!!! I have been indexing the photos in the Geelong Advertiser from 1936 onwards and I am sure I have come across Eisteddfods - I will check if any have photos for you - or I may have seen them as articles in passing. From the depths of my memory I feel that they were Geelong people competing in Ballarat but I may be wrong. Anyway leave it with me and I shall get back to you. kind regards, Pam Jennings ----- Original Message ----- From: "Angela Hennel" <a-hennel@netspace.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 30, 2009 3:16 PM Subject: [GEELONG] Geelong Aria pre 1975 >I was wondering whether anyone could help or point me in the right > direction please. > I'm looking for information and results for the Geelong Aria (a section > of the Geelong Eisteddfod I presume) pre 1975. It just goes to show that a new pair of eyes can pick up what others have missed. My cousin visited yesterday and I gave her the information you all sent me and also some new info that was found with a little push in new directions. She was very happy and excited with what she now has. She plans to buy a few certificates to help out her searching. Again thank you all. This is a great list with great helpers too. If anyone is researching the family names mentioned above we would love to hear from you with any data you can share with us. She is wanting to find out ALL that she can about her relations. As well as stories if anyone has any of her line. Regards, Melissa
