Hi Folks, 4,478 entries have been added to the Geelong Consolidated Book Index for the following books ... Illustrated Guide to Geelong and District Hotels, Pubs & Inns of the Geelong Country Districts Rothwell Cemetery 1859-2009: 150 years of Community Service The last two are brand new books hot off the printing press - and as with our standard procedure, there is an embargo on lookup requests on the Mailing List for these books until February 2010 Enjoy ........... Hi Folks, This one came out of the blue! Stephen Due, Chief Librarian at Geelong Hospital Library contacted me re digital copies of the Geelong Infirmary & Benevolent Asylum 1852-1896. Following those discussions, Geelong Hospital Library has provided those files for our Geelong and District web site. They are WONDERFUL reading and of course it was then appropriate to do an "intro" web page with a little history on the hospital etc. http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/geelong/people/gdghosp Regards ............ Hi Linda - thanks for the update on the Arts Weekend - I suspect it will be the same time next year but will certainly mark it down and let everyone know well in advance and hopefully some Historical Societies in that region may be able to get involved in some way as well. Pam Thankyou so much for posting the notice of the arts trail, we just returned and it was a great weekend. Good to see some geelong family history books on display as well as sketches of some of the old buildings in the area. Well worth the trip. look forward to seeing it next year or when its on again. Today saw 150 years of community service for the Rothwell (Little River) Cemetery Trust. Eighty three people turned up at the cemetery for an historical walk, guided by Sandra Richmond, followed by the launch of the "History of Rothwell Cemetery" along with the reprint of another local history book "Little River - A Place to Remember' by Frank Shaw, and a magnificent country cooked afternoon tea back at the Little River Mechanics Institute! This event was presented by the Little River Historical Society and the Cemetery Trust and both should be congratulated for the day and the excellent condition and care they take of their cemetery. Well done everyone!! kind regards, Pam Jennings
Hi Susie, Just wondering if it is the very early roots of unionism in Australia. I would presume a "well burnt brick" is an experienced qualified bricklayer (exposed to many years of outdoor work) The nuisances may have been unscrupulous practioners of the trade or any other problems workers may have had at that time. No one would have wanted to put their name to such a document as trouble with the authorities is what had brought them to our shores in the first place. >From what I can see in the trade union archive Victorian Operative Bricklayer's Society didn't officially start until 1857 so this may have been its grass roots. http://www.atua.org.au/archives/ALE0886a.htm Cheers Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susie Zada" <szada@zades.com.au> To: <aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 25, 2009 3:30 PM Subject: [GEELONG] Who or what was "The Bricks" > Hi Folks, > > While searching for information for an up-coming presentation, I stumbled > across an article in the Addy which has my curiosity buttons working > overtime - any ideas?? > > Appeared on 19th Dec 1840 and 26th Dec 1840 - both times on front page ... > > THE BRICKS > Branch Association > The Members of the above Honorable Society are particularly requested to > meet at the Woolpack Inn, on the 1st day of January, 1841, to take into > consideration the most effectual steps for removing several Nuisances; and > the best means of carrying the operations of the Association into effect - > and initiating several New Members. > A G.H.B. in the chair, > N.B. - None but well burnt bricks admitted. > HARD BRICK > Secretary > > I've put a copy of the advertisement on the Geelong and District Can You > Help? web page .... > > http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/geelong/gdhelp > > I've had a quick look at the first couple of issues for January 1841 but > so > far haven't found anything on The Bricks! > > And this wasn't even 1st April! > > Regards ......... Hi Folks, While searching for information for an up-coming presentation, I stumbled across an article in the Addy which has my curiosity buttons working overtime - any ideas?? Appeared on 19th Dec 1840 and 26th Dec 1840 - both times on front page ... THE BRICKS Branch Association The Members of the above Honorable Society are particularly requested to meet at the Woolpack Inn, on the 1st day of January, 1841, to take into consideration the most effectual steps for removing several Nuisances; and the best means of carrying the operations of the Association into effect - and initiating several New Members. A G.H.B. in the chair, N.B. - None but well burnt bricks admitted. HARD BRICK Secretary I've put a copy of the advertisement on the Geelong and District Can You Help? web page .... http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/geelong/gdhelp I've had a quick look at the first couple of issues for January 1841 but so far haven't found anything on The Bricks! And this wasn't even 1st April! Regards ......... Susie Z
