I've almost finishing checking Sand, Fireworks and Boxthorn, so I'll take on 1854. Di
Hi Pauline, I've had a look at the church register you sent and also a few entries in the Geelong & District Consolidated Book Index ....... worth looking at the various references. I'm almost convinced that "Bilenan" is a house / property name and not a geographic place name as we know it today. I noticed the Edward COLLINS in "Bullockies, Draymen & Horsemen" and I this definitely looks like your man - it was dated 4 Jan 1841 and referred to some problems he had with his employer - Rev Benjamin HURST - which just happens to be the minister who baptised Edward John COLLINS on 9th February 1841. It says that COLLINS was employed at the Buntingdale Mission. Immediately above the COLLINS entry in the church register, is an entry for Francis Lee TUCKFIELD at Buntingdale "near Geelong" so I would say it was at or part of the Buntingdale Mission. So have a good look at the Book Index and the Directories Index - plenty there to follow up on. Also, I presume you're aware of "Emond Family History: from Selkirk, Selkirkshire, Scotland to Geelong, Victoria, Australia 1854-2004" by Glennis Dees - if not, follow it up. Regards .............. Hi Jill, Thank you! Just a reminder to everyone - if you look at the web page for latest details of years being done and those still to be done, remember to refresh your screen in case you're looking at old information. http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/geelong/people/gdghosp Regards ................... Hi Melissa, We're all human - in the excitement of finding a relevant entry, you forgot to read the information about the registers! Go back to the home page for the "Index to the Admission Books of the Geelong Infirmary and Benevolent Asylum" and read the details there - in particular the last sentence in red - that tells you to look at "Locating an Entry" which is a tab near the top right. And there's your answer! Read it carefully and then you should be able to find the details either in Geelong or at any LDS Family History Library (which also includes the GSV for anyone who goes there in Melbourne). And also remember if you're looking at INFIRMARY or BENEVOLENT ASYLUM entries! Regards ......... I have just completed indexing the 1852 annual report for geelong hospital and it only took a few hours. Very interesting, as many people who donated money are listed, along with some employees and patients. some who donated are listed under their companies name so you can see who they were working for. Anyone else willing to donate a few hours, this looks well worthwhile. Patients are already indexed. I will do 1856 & 1857 next susie. Linda Edwards.
Hi Susie, Put me down for 1854. Jill Ferguson
Wow, what a great addition to the Geelong History Data. I had a quick look for a surname Ive been searching for and low and behold there was the man I have been looking for. My question now is what other data is to be found other than the date and admission number? Is there more information to be found for each of these people? The ones I found were: DEDMAN, James in 1864 DEDMAN, Alma May 1913 DEDMAN, Gladys Violet 1912 I did come across a shock one he was listed under the name of DEITRICH, Fredk, Charles, in 1914. This surname is spelt DIETRICH so I would not have found it except it stood out being the only one listed (He was my great grandfather and I had no idea he was ever admitted. So it was a shock to find him, but also interesting to find out some more about his life). Is anyone able to find more information on these 4 people for me please. I am unable to travel to Geelong as much as I would like anymore so it now makes it difficult to research these items in person. Regards, Melissa
Hi everyone, Thanks for the responses to my query, but still no luck. I’ve emailed the document to Susie as suggested and hopefully that’ll do the trick. And to Joan, my husband’s grandfather only arrived in 1920 and I’m sure he’s not connected to any other Judd’s here in Australia . My families are BIRCH, COLLINS, EMOND, BONE, KEE, BLISS. Thanks again from Pauline
Hi all, fantastic addition to your already superb website and a family researchers dream. Many thanks to all of those who have made it possible. Like the email below, I am curious as to how to view the individual data, as in the couple of pages indexed under the "appendix to infirmary" tab. I have read the details in the "locating an entry" tab, but do not have access to either of the history centres here in the UK. Is there any access via a website where we might view the individual data, have gained the relevent record reference numbers via the infirmary index tab? thanks again, Jim Higgins UK, desendant of the Higgins/Higgans who came from Cornwall, England 1849 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susie Zada" <szada@zades.com.au> To: <aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 08, 2009 4:17 AM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Geelong Hospital Reports > Hi Melissa, > > We're all human - in the excitement of finding a relevant entry, you > forgot > to read the information about the registers! > > Go back to the home page for the "Index to the Admission Books of the > Geelong Infirmary and Benevolent Asylum" and read the details there - in > particular the last sentence in red - that tells you to look at "Locating > an > Entry" which is a tab near the top right. Hi Folks, Thank you to Linda and Pam for getting this project off the ground already. I've updated the web page and there is now a link from the top to a section called INDEXING PROJECT. http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/geelong/people/gdghosp Have a look and don't be bashful in volunteering - it's not hard! And remember that it's other people volunteering who have made so much terrific information and databases available for our Geelong & District web site. Regards .......... Hi Susie, I will index 1852 Hospital Annual report. There is an amasing amount of info for anyone wanting to index a year or even a page or two, you never know what you will find. Linda Edwards
Hi Susie - put me down for 1853. regards, Pam
Hi Folks, This was suggested by Linda on the Mailing List and it's such a good idea that I'm going to be generous and give you a chance to help out! <vbg> This is a VERY simple task and if a few people put there hands up we can really make a dent in this project - as each Annual Report is completed, it can be added to the Potpourri Database and hence each entry can be found by the global "Search this site" search box on the Geelong & District web site as well as in the full Potpourri files. PROCEDURE 1. Let me know which year you are going to index - I might put a list on the website so people know which ones are "in progress" or done. 2. The index file should include the YEAR of the Annual Report and the file should include just 2 columns - Column 1 = name / subject; Column 2 = page number (s) 3. The file can be any format that allows columns - i.e. a 2 column table in Word, a spreadsheet, database etc. I use MS Office but can generally convert most formats - if not you could save it as a tab delimited text file or similar. 4. Ideally names should be in the format of SURNAME, Christian name / initials then Title i.e. Dr W R Lang would be entered as LANG, W R Dr So Surnames in CAPITALS Avoid ALL punctuation except for the comma after the surname or as a "sub item" The index shouldn't be limited to subscribers' names - any subject of interest should be included - names of new buildings, places etc. 5. Have a look at .... http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/databases/gdbooks/gdbooks for examples - the same procedure used for the G&D Consolidated Book index should be used for the Annual Reports. 6. Email the file to me - if you want to do a few entries and then email it to me for comments / suggestions and to make sure I can read your file, that's fine. 7. And it's that easy! So put your hand up and say ... I'll index Geelong Hospital Annual Report 1865 or whatever year you choose - just wait for a reply to confirm that no-one else has started that year. Over to you! ..................... Susie Z
Hi Linda, You're so right - there is some wonderful information in there - the names but also the growth and extensions to the hospital. And looking at the categories of diseases and number of deaths from different ones ... all fascinating reading. I would be very surprised if the hospital library didn't have the full set of Annual Reports - and from memory there is a set at the Geelong Heritage Centre - I think a lot of the Heritage Centre collection came from Roy Lang (Dr W R Lang) who wrote "Visions & Realities: a history of the Geelong Infirmary & Benevolent Asylum". I think it included his notes etc. he compiled for the book. I chuckled when you mentioned the value of indexing the collection! I should be able to include these .pdf files in the standard search facility on the web site but there are a few technical issues stopping that from happening. Each .pdf file is fully searchable within Acrobat but at this stage I'm not just making progress with sorting out the global search. I understand the basics of the problem - these are scanned images that have been made searchable whereas all the other .pdf files on my site were text in the first place. Anyway, enough of the technical part - there is no question that they would be worth indexing and added to the Potpourri Database. I'll address that in a separate email! All the best ........... what a wonderful snapshot of the times. Very interesting reading especially the annual reports with lists of donations, I have to wonder if it would make a subject for indexing, the donations, so many names from the area some with occupations and places of residence. in one year I saw names of shearers who donated money, someone who gave a donation thanks to the finding of a lost cow, and the crews of ships and dredges donating money, possibly some of it was to say thanks for the care of a mate, also interesting to see 3 times more men than women were treated. does that reflect the balance of population. also interesting to see the types of illnesses only 1 asthma that year but lots of general infections, tb etc. Do you know if other years are available at all and not indexed yet or not surviving. Thanks to the hopsital and Susie.

Hi Folks, Finally got the details and web page together for this fascinating subject we discussed on the Mailing List. http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/geelong/people/gdsunaria You'll see from the web site that there is scope to add information / photos for our "local" contestants. I've already contacted a couple of people on the list who were related to contestants and have agreed to send information. Please feel free to contact me if you have something to add.
