    3. A rood is a bit under 4 metres in length. A perch is a little over 5 metre in length. A perch is also a measurement of area and is equal to about 25 square metres. A rood is also a measurement of area and is about a quarter of an acre or about 1000 sq metres Regards Chris -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-geelong-district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-geelong-district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sue Holloway Sent: Thursday, 14 January 2010 7:04 PM To: aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com Subject: [GEELONG] Land Files Hi Pam, Think it is the old measurements, fractions of an "Acre" of land, that is "Rood" and "Perches" (think that is how you spell it). 3. Hi, Could it be "Roods" and "Perches", relating to the area of land, as in the measurement of so many acres (or hectares), roods and perches. Regards, Shirley Wonder if anyone knows what the phrase 'R & P' means in correspondence in Land Files at PROV? Unfortunately I have not seen this in any files I have looked at, nor do I have a sentence with it in, which may help as well! 3. Hi Folks, The PROV map that Carollyn was referring to ........ on PROV site "Search within a series" and enter [VPRS] 16171 and for all / any field enter 5311 - this will bring up the map of Geelong. Unfortunately the "year" is part of the map that has torn off - just know it was 29.3. xx ! Although it is a "working plan" with a lot of more recent notations it is probably 19th century. Anyway, it very clearly shows the name change from Sydney Place North and South to Sydney Parade, and Sydney Place East and West to Sydney Avenue. This clears up a discrepancy between information in Hotels of Geelong and the Streets of Geelong! Chris - your best option is to find Directories for just prior to the death of your relative in 1883 or look at rate books for the period. Have fun .......... No Sydney Place. Sydney Parade is a major street, and Sydney Ave crosses it in the form of a St Andrew's Cross. It's possible that the abbreviations Pde and Pl may have been confused. However, on the central Geelong Melway map and the Street View Google map, there is a Thorne Pl running parallel to Sydney Pde from Swanston St, and this ends in a right-angled turn towards Admiral Pl. This is too short to be labelled in most maps, but the Street View shows three buildings on it. Worth a drive around to explore? Is it possible that there was a Sydney Place on the other side of Swanston Street which has been swallowed up by the hospital as it expanded?
