    2. Corinne Thompson
    3. Hello Chris, Yes it was called Newtown. But no doubt there is a lot of "Newtowns" in Victoria. The "Corio Parish Plan 8813" has a small map of "Newtown and Chilwell" included on the extreme left-hand side. Unfortunately it is damaged. If you find a better one, could you please let me know? Kindest Regards ...... Corinne. On 18/01/2010, at 8:46 PM, Ken and Chris Farrow wrote: > Dear Listers, > I have been looking for a plan for Chilwell Geelong on the Land > Files site. 3. Hoping someone can help Ginger BELANGER who is trying to contact this person who also lived in Leopold during the 1960s, thanks, Pam Jennings My family was formerly a resident in Leopold as my father was in the oil industry in 1967. My family name is Belanger and we had rented a new home in a new subdivision in Leopold in 1967. I remember a shop that I frequented as we would drink milk shakes there often, I was friends of the owner's daughter at that time. I have forgotten her name would love to get in touch. We were members of the Leopold Methodist Church and I have a photo taken in front of the church. I'm coming to Geelong in October 2010 and would love to revisit my former home town, any information will so helpful in this,I'm attending the 100th anniversary of Geelong High school's Centenary. So please help me in this matter. Thank you so much Ginger Belanger gabbie52@charter.net

    3. Thanks Ada - yes I totally agree - I need the context in which this woman is talking about. I took it on as a favour and she was somewhat disorganised about what she was telling me. I intend calling her later today and see if I can get something more definite about her query!!! 3. Hello Pam, Not knowing the context of the "R and P" I am at a loss to understand why Roods and Perches is considered the answer, I only think that solution would apply if there was a measurement, e.g. "44 acres R & P " though in my experience the Lands Dept were VERY PRECISE when they mentioned measurements, and this, I think, would not be done! Was "R&P" 1. in the body of the correspondence (so, what was it next to?), 2. as a code at the top of the page where the filing information was entered? 3. or other? In the Lands Dept R was sometimes used for: Registration of a lease Revaluation of improvements and other things, and for Roads and Reserves And P was used as a prefix to "surveys" usually with a date following, though not always So.... maybe.... "Registered and Surveyed"??? or, simply, "Registered and Paid"??? One really needs the context, otherwise, we are just guessing. 3. Hi Folks, And a small lesson / reminder for anyone looking at my favourite VPRS 16171 parish plans (or any parish plans etc. for that matter) - the SIZE of each allotment of land is shown in numbers such as 0.2.0 or 320.0.0 or 549.2.3 - these are all the standard notation of a.r.p. which stands for acres, roods and perches. 640 acres (mainly found in country areas) was the traditional square mile. When surveying the parishes, most allotments were a uniform part of 640 acres - i.e. 640 acres, 320 acres, 160 acres, 80 acres etc. On the Bellarine we had a lot of 320 acres and 80 acres, particular in the Bellarine Hills where it was more intensive farming - rich soil ideal for crops. Obviously a river boundary or similar meant that you never got a "perfect" part of 640 acres, but inland where there were no geographic obstructions, you'll find that many of the north-south and east-west roads were the boundary of the earlier larger allotments. A rood was 1/4 of an acre A lot of town lots were surveyed at 0.2.0 - i.e. 2 roods or the traditional 1/2-acre block! Regards ......... 3. Back in my schooldays of learning by rote Rods and Perches came into the scheme of things but I can't remember now what it was that we recited over and over. But I do recall that the valuation of a house we used to own in Sydney years ago had the lot measurements in Chains & Rods/Perches. Google found this for me - "There were 12 inches to the foot, 3 feet to the yard, five yards and one foot and six inches to the rod (or pole or perch), 4 rods (or poles or perches) to the chain, 10 chains to the furlong, and 8 furlongs to the statute mile." Presumably we used the British 'statute mile' - it differed in length in Scotland and Ireland - but you will have to do your own conversions if you want to make comparisons in current measurements. My mind is too befuddled with years of converting old recipes. But I do have a collection of tape measures with inches on one side, centimetres on the other, which is so handy - I still think in inches. Cheers Barbara

    3. I replied to this yesterday, but the email is still coming. Here is another take on it. But it might only refer to government departments. In these cases R might stand for "request" and P for "Property" See below for quote from PROV web site: "The Property Division filing system was an alpha-numeric system. The file number format comprised a letter prefix followed by a sequential number. R files: request files related to all new requests directed to Accommodation Planning and Audit Group for assessment. These files were created when client departments or other organisations requested accommodation, or the purchase of a property. All the leasing and purchasing negotiations were documented in these R files. An example would be : a request by the Police Department for new premises for their dog squad in Brunswick. The file number would be R 123 and the title would be Request For New Premises : Police Dog Squad. Once a suitable premises was found and either the lease or purchase negotiations were finalised by the Projects and Consultancy Group the file was handed over to the Property Management Section to handle the ongoing maintenance and leasing and purchasing details of the premises. At this stage the letter prefix changed from R to P. P Files: there were three types of property files: leased property, government owned property and outgoings files. All three types were identified by the prefix P." But that might not be what the Original Poster had in mind. Perhaps it is roods and perches, though the abbreviation of rood is rd. See this for an explanation of the origin of acres, roods, perches and furlong: http://www.sizes.com/units/acre.htm Jennifer -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-geelong-district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-geelong-district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pam & Trevor Jennings Sent: Thursday, 14 January 2010 3:54 PM To: geelong district Subject: [GEELONG] Land Files Wonder if anyone knows what the phrase 'R & P' means in correspondence in Land Files at PROV? 3. A rood is a bit under 4 metres in length. A perch is a little over 5 metre in length. A perch is also a measurement of area and is equal to about 25 square metres. A rood is also a measurement of area and is about a quarter of an acre or about 1000 sq metres Regards Chris -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-geelong-district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-geelong-district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sue Holloway Sent: Thursday, 14 January 2010 7:04 PM To: aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com Subject: [GEELONG] Land Files Hi Pam, Think it is the old measurements, fractions of an "Acre" of land, that is "Rood" and "Perches" (think that is how you spell it).
