    1. [GEELONG] Help with identity of school
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Folks, I need your help! I have added almost 4,000 entries to the Potpourri database from a series of school registers indexed over a number of years by the Geelong Family History Group. They relate to (and are grouped as) schools in the former Shire of Barrabool. We were able to confirm the location of some of these registers at the Public Record Office last Friday and have a lead on a few others, but for one of the "schools" we need to confirm the actual school first before we can identify the location of the register! There's a better explanation on our "Can You Help" page at ... http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/geelong/gdhelp and also a LINK TO A LIST of 26 pupils who attended both the Modewarre School and the "Moriac Sec School" - the latter is the one we're trying to sort out. We're hoping someone can identify some of the names on the list and if they're still alive, find out if "Moriac Sec School" is actually Moriac School No 4117! We're fairly certain that it is but it would be really nice to be 100% certain. There is a good write-up on Moriac School No 4117 in Barrabool: Land of the Magpie by Ian Wynd. Surnames on the list of students who moved from Modewarre School to Moriac School No 4117: ABBOTT BOND CONDICK ERWIN GOWLY / GOWTY HYNDES LAMONT LANE LLOYD MALONE McCONACHY McNAMARA McPHEE NOBLE PRICE STILES Please have a look at the list and help us confirm that we're talking about Moriac School No 4117! Many thanks .......... Susie Z

Hi Lynne - I have finally called up the inquest for William Farmer which appears to be the only inquest held for this accident (I can only assume that the other bodies weren't recovered - hence no inquest). 1. [GEELONG] Tip for finding immigrant families
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Folks, Thought I'd share this one as even PROV wasn't aware that this search option worked ... I was researching James HARRISON (not of Geelong Advertiser fame) who married Margaret BYRON in 1855 at St Mary's, Geelong. When they married, one of the witnesses was Bridget BYRON, believed to have been Margaret's sister and believed that they came to Australia together from Co Tipperary. Previously I would try to find Margaret BYRON arriving, hopefully the right age and country of origin, then check that ship's passengers for her sister. I hadn't got very far until I tried this search option ... Family Name = Byr* Given Name = Bri* OR Mar* Year to = 1855 Primary Sort = Year Secondary Sort = Ship And there they were - right next to each other on the list - arriving at Point Henry in June 1854 on the ship Chandernagore. The surname was indexed as BYRANE but they were from Co Tipperary and the right ages. And an even more positive match - Bridget was assigned to John ULMER of Corio Street, Geelong - they were married in 1857 and both Bridget and Margaret had the same parents listed when they died. So the Boolean expression "OR" works on both assisted and unassisted immigrants indexes on the PROV web site. You must put the OR in capitals. This is the only Boolean expression that works (NOT doesn't, but AND is the default for a space). Just think of some of the options you can use - if you know a family arrived with a bundle of children and know the names of the children (i.e. Sarah, Patrick, Michael, Mary), try Given Name with something like ... Sar* OR Pat* OR Mich* OR Mar* And be sure to use the sort by Year and Ship and you'll find they'll all be grouped together. I think it would probably work better with the children than the parents but of course you can try the parents as well - it's just that children names are often in full but parents are sometimes just an initial. Bottom line - this opens up a whole new option for finding arrivals of ancestors that was sometimes more difficult before. Have fun ......... Susie Z

    1. Re: [GEELONG] Land Files Chilwell - Lesson time!
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Folks, Everyone's has been terrifically helpful with replies to Chris's question but I think it's time that I contributed to the conversation with "lesson time" and some more useful tips for these terrific plans. Answering Chris's question first - Chilwell is part of the Parish of Moorpanyal [plan no. 3179 in VPRS 16171]. On the plan Irish Town would be in Section III overflowing in to Section IV - both in lower right hand corner. Chilwell was loosely Sections III, IV, V and VI. A LOT of the answers to the questions and suggestions etc. can be found on our Geelong and District web site ... www.zades.com.au Use the drop down menus across the page ... GEELONG and DISTRICT LOCATIONS TOWNS, PLACES and PARISHES CHILWELL entry shows ... Other Names: Irish Town and Marnock Vale (2 different locations within Chilwell) Parish: Moorpanyal 1955 Municipality: Newtown & Chilwell Current Municipality: Greater Geelong Land District: Geelong County: Grant GEELONG and DISTRICT LOCATIONS PLACES IN c.1882-1890 Chilwell appears under Newtown & Chilwell [a simple Ctrl-F would find the word Chilwell on this page] GEELONG and DISTRICT LOCATIONS WHERE IS IT or WAS IT? Places like Irish Town, Marnock Vale and Mercer's Hill are included in this list. And if you use the SEARCH box near the top right of the web page, and search for CHILWELL you'll get plenty of hits on the web site - too many in fact as I haven't removed the individual A-Z pages for towns (now consolidated into one file!). I can see I've got a bit more housework to do on the web site! <vbg> And looking further than Geelong and District, if you look at the PROV web site, select SEARCHING FIND BY NUMBER Enter 16171 Click on ACCESSING THE RECORDS IN THIS SERIES TAB Click on Consignment P3 Click on County and Parish Index This is NOT an index as most of us would imagine but four maps covering all of Victoria - if you know where a place is (towns / places shown on the map) you can then see what PARISH and COUNTY the place is in. A definite MUST HAVE for everyone! Melbourne and Suburbs are NOT included in these four maps - that one actually appears in Consignment P2. And while you're looking at P2 - this includes maps / plans for Closer Settlements and Soldier Settlements - how to waste away another week or two! Another place to look on the Geelong & District web site .... If you look at the Potpourri Indexes ... http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/databases/potpourri/ppindexes You will notice Crown Land Application Registers, Crown Land Sales Registers, Land Applications under Section 47 in 1863, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. - in other words a lot of "local" registers are gradually being indexed and included in the Potpourri Database. And remember, the GEELONG LAND DISTRICT initially stretched all the way to the South Australian border! I think that's probably more than enough to absorb in one lesson! Just one final comment - beware of referring to "Land Files" - a lot of us would think you were referring to the 1,000s and 1,000s of individual files at PROV with correspondence and details of our ancestors land dealings! That's a whole different saga but the Parish Plans and Town Plans etc. will certainly help you find your way into those magic land files! I hope you haven't gone cross-eyed and your eyes glazed over - I just thought it was time to clarify a few things and hopefully help with a few more tips. Regards ............. Susie Z

    3. >From Geelong Irish Society Inc, March 2009 Newsletter - http://www.geelongirishsociety.org.au/newsletters/2009-03.pdf Irish History in Geelong - Pt 5 and Final Episode Another suburb which had a majority Irish population in the 1850s was then known to all as Irish Town. Eventually Kildare and its neighbouring area of Ashby was renamed Geelong West when the area became an independent borough. Irish Town was renamed Chilwell. When this suburb also obtained independent borough status this became Newtown-Chilwell. The name Chilwell was subsequently dropped from the borough title, though it remains as a district of the borough. Cheers Barbara
