Hi Listers I am flummoxed - for years I have tried to find my gr gr grandfather. (Suzie you will probably remember helping me with this search in the good old days of the BBS) The story is this My Gr grandfather David DORAN was married on 25 Feb 1868 at St Pats Kilmore to FLora Robinson (Robertson) He states he was born in Geelong and that his parents were Michael and Mary DORAN (nee BURKE (BOURKE) he stated he was aged 26 when married David would have been born c 1842 (and according to him in Geelong) HOWEVER !!! after many searches by many able bodied and helpful genes, researches and anyone else who was close to a list anywhere I have still NOT been able to find his parents or any siblings. I did find a marriage of a Michael DORAN to a Mary BOURKE at Castleisland in Co Kerry Ireland they married on 25 Feb 1838 (note the date (same as David's) and I wonder if this is coincidence) but if these are my David's parents I can NOT (and neither can anyone else) find them arriving into Australia c1838/42 in time for David to have been born. The Roman Catholic baptism records and burials for Geelong are short and sometimes non existant so I am unable to find out if he was actually baptised there or not. After 12 years with success in the search for the rest of my family I am really wishing to find my father's ancestors. I have ALL the family coming down the line to modern times, the sad bit being that my grandparents had a fire not long after they arrived in NZ in 1910 so any family papers (and my grandfather being the eldest son would have had them) went up in smoke. No Australian family member has anything either. Anyone any ideas? or should I just close the file. What about Catholic schools in Geelong? David could read and write so he must have attended school??? Could he have been born there and then the parents and the babe went back to Ireland until he was old enough to come out again himself?? I really hate the idea of giving up but I can no longer see the wood for the trees! cheers Patsy http://www.genebug.com and again on http://www.countrystay.co.nz

Hi Brenda, Civil registration commenced in Victoria in July 1853 - any "wedding certificates" before that were church records and generally did not contain the fields that were part of the civil registration. There were church registers that contained multiple entries per page. Sometimes there were full certificates (still church ones and not civil reg) that contained more though they tended to be much later. It's always worth contacting the church to see if they have any more information - I wouldn't count on it for that period but you never know. Regards ....... I'm interested in an marriage that took place in 1851 in Geelong and would like to get a copy of the wedding certificate if it has all the detail but won't bother if it's likely to be a basic certificate like the 1851 one. > > thanks > Brenda > > Families I'm researching from the Geelong area are: COTTRELL GORELL HANKINSON SHUGG STANTON WALDIE > > > ==== AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT Mailing List ==== > Geelong & District Towns and Regions : > http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdtown.htm > >

Hi Listers, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me when Marriage certificates began to detail the bride & groom's birthplaces, ages, occupations and parent's names & occupations. I have a wedding certificate issued in Geelong in May 1850 and it is very basic only showing the bride & groom's names, witnesses' names, date and minister's name. It is extremely basic compared to a certificate issued in Ballarat in 1855 that shows all the above information. The Clem de Garis Susie mentioned must be a descendant. Just not sure who. I looked up the catalogue of Mildura library seeing as the family had a strong connection there and found a number of references including a history of the de Garis family in Australia. I though I would check the State Library catalogue to see if they had it - they don't. But they do have a pamphlet called "Credit Crusade". ( 1 page folded, according to the catalogue) Finally! Now to find the time to go there! Heather Reference and Local History Librarian North Melbourne Library 66 Errol St North Melbourne 3051 Ph 9297 3280 Fax 9297 3279
Hi Lexie The most likely person to have this would be John Waghorn of Thomastown, Vic. He's probably in the phone book. He is an expert on things postal, including employees. Good morning all I am writing a history of the district of Balintore, near Colac in Victoria's western district. There was a post office run from the home of George and Janie Hayes. Does anyone have an envelope bearing the Balintore Post Office stamp? I would dearly love a scan of it to add to the history. The post office operated from 1922 to 1959. Have a great day Lexie Picken Colac
Councillor for Moorabbin shire - foremost proponent for the separation of Sandringham from the shire. Near enough to Brighton - he may also have been involved at Brighton - it's near enough. I have a feeling that the name De Garis rings a bell and its in relation to being a Town Clerk at Caulfield or Brighton in the 1950/60s. Maybe a list in civil records there can help. Brighton had a very good historical society operating some years back. Regards Craig Cook
