    3. Hello Robyn, shows born about 1824. No parentage given. That's the sum of my knowledge. The quickest way to get exile information is from "Convicts of the Port Phillip District" by Keith M Clark. He's gathered all the information together which is available in several places, passenger lists, pardons granted, etc., checked it, and put it all together alphabetically. Actually, I'm surprised your man was put to matmaking, generally those put to this activity were troublesome, or could not read or write. As he could do the latter, we must presume he came into the former category. Whereas other trades had some "communal" activity, the looms used by the matmakers were set up in their cells and worked in daylight hours in solitude. They were partly dismantled when work ended and moved to allow access to a bed. No chance to lie down on the job! In the morning the bed was packed away and the loom, which took up most of the cell, was reassembled and set up for work. You might also like to read "The Pentonvillians" by Ian Wynd. All old fashioned ordinary reading, no internet, sorry. 3. Hi Deirdre, I'm a member of Convictions Australian Shipping so if you'd like to give me the names your looking for I'll have a look for you. To those who aren't familiar with Convictions....... to become a member, you have to contribute to the site ie. passenger list/s and various other subjects of interest. You need to contact the list owner who will send you a template. It's an interesting site and being a member allows you access to searchable passenger lists etc. There are still many ships named that don't have passenger lists and it would be great if more people contributed. 3. Hello Alwynne, One would expect to find them on the shipping indexes of whatever state they landed in. Fare paying passengers were not asked their reason for going to Australia. There must have been many hundreds (thousands?) who just came for a visit, or on their way to another country. Just because they are listed does not automatically mean that they were immigrating. 3. Hello everyone This is my first posting so I will list the names I am interested in. MICHAEL QUIRK , Denis, Michael and Grace COSTIGAN who I believe all arrived in victoria in 1841 on the ship Enmore. Michael Quirk and Grace Costigan were married at Geelong's RC St Mary of the Angels church in `1846. They lived near Mt Moriac until 1861 farming the land. I believe Michael Quirk may have been an inn-keeper at Mt Moriac earlier. I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they may belong to the Costigan or Quirk families and various descendants. Does anyone know if the inn at Mt Moriac still exists or is it known exactly where it was? Thank you Vicki

    3. Hi, I'm new to this search for ancestry and am looking for information regarding the Hurley family (my maiden name). What I do know - My father's name is Thomas Edmund Russell Hurley My mother's name is Eileen Ivy Ada Hurley (nee Baker) My grandfather's name (I think) was Thomas Joseph Hurley - he was a doctor in Geelong during 1900's up to around 1950. My grandmother's name was Grace Hurley My uncle's name was/is (not sure if alive) John Hurley He had three daughters Desiree, Tatiana and Michelle My father and my uncle went to Geelong Grammar (Timbertop I think) as boarders. In later years my grandmother moved to Hawthorn in Melbourne in Cristobel Crescent. I think there was a street named Hurley after my family, I'm not sure. Any information would be greatly appreciated as my father will give me very little information. Kind Regards Kerry Tennant (nee Hurley)

    3. Hello ? (name not given) I usually do not reply to messages without a proper name, but have decided to reply this once. If your Edward EVANS is, in fact, the Edward who arrived on the "Anna Maria", then he was an "exile". Exiles were a new class of convict, given a year in prison, first in solitary, and then learning a trade (some still in solitary, some allowed to work in groups), they were then placed on a ship for Australia (in his case, for Port Phillip) and on arrival were issued with a conditional pardon. They were free to live and work in Port Phillip, but could not return to England until the expiry of their sentence, hence the name "exile". Now, so you can test the voracity of the "pregnant, born/died on board story: Edward was convicted of larceny by a "servant in a dwelling house", convicted in London at the central criminal court 24 Sep 1846, sent on to Pentonville prison (where trade training was given) 2 Nov 1846 where he was taught the trade of "rug and mat maker". His previous callings were "soldier and porter". He then went on board the "Anna Maria", arriving Geelong 23 Jun 1849. So if this is your man, he had no access to friends from at least 24 Sept 1846 to 23 Jun 1849. He was listed as "single, could read and write" That's all the information here. The second passenger listing, the "disposal" listing, which showed who the man was engaged to work for, and his wages, was "sent on to Sydney head office" before it could be copied for the Port Phillip records. You may have some luck on the NSW records. 3. Hi Paulette, Ah - that explains it - I was looking for TAYLORs buried at Drysdale. James Inglis BENNETT and Ellen Louise REYNOLDS were both married twice and their siblings and children ended up marrying into just about every pioneer family on the Peninsula! Are you able to send me a scanned copy of the photo? You would need to send it direct to me and not via the list which doesn't allow attachments. Two reasons for the request - if we don't already have it, the Bellarine Historical Society would be delighted to add it to our photo archives, and if we do already have it, then we may have more information on file as to where it was taken. As you're probably aware, a LOT of houses had names - one project I'd love to do is record ALL the house names in the area from various sources, but there are other higher priority projects at the moment :-( ... always the way! Anyway, if you can send a copy, we might be able to pin down Lumeah. Regards ........
