Hello Ada I really meant to answer privately as I don't think the subject would be elligable for Geelong mailing list. I have a research letter from a man in USA who said John Edward Mercer Ewart Clark Leask ( boy I think if we found him we'd know him ) was born 13 Jan 1907 in Geelong. On the birth cert it said his father was James Leask & mother Margaret. Father was a vicar in Williamstown. This is where you come in. He is also looking for the birth of Henry Leask 30 June 1913. We don't have this. Why would a son be born in Geelong when they lived in Williamstown? I suppose it could happen. He said he thinks they ended up in Russia. Bad times to be going there. He said he is willing to pay as he told me in previous contact by email. I could foreward the letter he sent me if you'd like to take over. He thinks he was C/E. His email is John H. Harden jayharden@mindspring.com. Let me know your postal address if you think you could help. Hello Kerry Looking further into the Hurley family I found the birth of a Thomas Joseph to Cornelius Joseph Hurley & Ellen Anne Dwyer Yarraville 1887 Also to Cornelious were James 1865, Daniel 1867, Patrick 1869, Michael 1873 & Thomas 1870 A Thomas Hurley donated in 1844 money for the education of his children at St Mary's school.A John Hurley is on the electoral roll living freehold Moorabool St in 1850 & in Malop St in 1849. In the Investigator journal of the Geelong Historical Soc Sept 1972 in an article about Ceres. Another famous family were the Hurleys. Their house still stands. Thomas Hurley was the original one, he had a son Thomas who became Inspector of schools and his two sons became famous surgeons, Sir Victor Hurley & Mr Leslie Hurley. Hi Margaret, I think your best bet would be either the Geelong Advertiser Index (Geelong Heritage Centre) or the Argus ....... Argus, 30th July 1858, p. 8 ...... Tenders wanted - masons' work of a church at Duneed, near Geelong. The Architect was Nathaniel BILLING. There may be "acceptance of tender" notices after this date as well. Another reference from the Geelong Advertiser 4th April 1863 ....... Drysdale Wesleyan Church, foundation stone laid 31/3/1863 (?), land provided by James LEATHERDALE. A.M. HOPE, Mt Duneed was contractor. Was A.M. HOPE any relation to John Parker HOPE? Does the church still exist? Was it one destroyed in the bushfires of 1944 (a Methodist Church was burnt down then and not rebuilt)? There may be more details mentioned in the Geelong Advertiser following the fires if so. As I said, the Geelong Advertiser Index would probably be your best bet although the index doesn't cover a lot of the 1900s, mainly the 1800s. Hope that helps. Regards ...... Ada Coas Pumphrey School Teacher began her fourty year teaching career 3rd October 1893 at Balmoral. She retired from North Geelong Primary School in 1937,and died at Araraton the 18th June1974 aged 98 years. Just a thought, My G Grandmother was placed in a home 1875-76 at the age of one year. I believe there was a home in Castlemaine. Not even sure how long she spent there, but reletives were located and she was brought up by the Seeley family of Geelong. Hi Peter - apart from the Orphanges, the Industrial School is a likely chance. Ealine and I are now compiling a book about the Geelong Industrial Schools, taking names from the Police Court reports etc where children had to come before the Bench to be admitted. The Industrial Schools at Geelong did not start until 1865. Before that date children appear to be sent to the Melbourne ones, along with the Reformatory. regards, Pam Jennings ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter MacAuslan" <pmaca@pipeline.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 30, 2003 9:50 AM Subject: [GEELONG] Geelong childrens homes > What records exist of children in Institutions ( homes) in Geelong in 1860 -63. > Details of John and Sarah McKinnon placed in Geelong homes from Ballarat. > Also Elizabeth McKinnon nee Malcolm in an asylum in Ballarat C,1860 > Carmel and > Peter MacAuslan > > > ==== AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT Mailing List ==== > Geelong & District Towns and Regions : > http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdtown.htm >
Hello, I just read your message for the Hurley Family Tree. Sorry but I have no information about that, BUT, and this is a big BUT, I was wondering how you come to have the name Tennent. I have a dead end in my Tennent line and they came through Geelong too. Wondering if you have any information about them at all? Many thanks, and good luck with your Hurley Tree too. Margaret Fleer
