    3. Hi Bill - what a kind offer! I think perhaps the best bet is to take your book to the Geelong Heritage Centre - they have copy facilities and I would be happy to then index it or whatever it needs to make the names etc accessable for everyone and then I can certainly print a write-up of your find in our Geelong Familt History Group magazine. I am sure the sale notes etc would be most interesting. Please reply to me off list and see what we can work out. many thanks again - Pam Jennings ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Willett" <zadot@benalla.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 30, 2003 11:47 AM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Geelong articles > Hello Pam, > > My family connection with Geelong was through my mother's family. 3. Hello Eric, Thanks for your reply. My information is that Elizabeth Sproule married James Gubby in 1857, he subsequently died in 1887. Elizabeth did not remarry and she died in 1888. Mary Gubby (James and Elizabeth's daughter married Henry Hodge). Frances Liomin is the mystery woman, she appears to have married twice, although this wasn't recorded in the "Hodge Memorandum", which is the book I think you are talking about. 3. Hello Ainslee, If you're talking about "Geelong Hotels and their Licensees" by Bill Morrow and Ian Wynd, then a couple of things to add ......... This has now been reprinted (nothing changed, just a straight reprint) by the Geelong Historical Society. The book is $12 to members of the Geelong Historical Society and I think $15 from the Geelong Heritage Centre. The introduction to the book explains the process of license applications etc. Licenses were granted in the courts - generally in the Court of Petty Sessions and you'll find that details appeared in the normal court registers and later in a separate licensing register. And yes, there was a "license" - the Bellarine Historical Society has an original as well as some photocopies. A lot would depend on whether your ancestors kept their copies as that's generally the only place you would find them, but as they were renewed each year, often they would be thrown away once the new one had been obtained. Also beware that the courts were generally Shire / Council based so the court records apply to the local court - in the 1800s there wasn't one court for the whole region but sometimes a neighbouring court sitting would be used. i.e. The Court of Petty Sessions which normally sat in the Court House at Drysdale, Shire of Bellarine, includes some Queenscliff hotels in the license renewals but only on odd occasions - generally where a license was transferred so a different time of year to the normal license renewals when each court would be geared up for all the renewals. You'll find some of the Geelong registers at the PRO - Geelong, Geelong West, South Barwon and possibly others. The Drysdale Court registers are at the Geelong Heritage Centre and have been fully indexed by the Bellarine Historical Society, 1859-1963. It is definitely reading the introduction to the hotels book - some very good explanations and information. Regards .... 3. Dear Ainslee I am currently reading a book called "A Knockabout Priest" it is a story about Father Jack or John Brosnan. It is a true story of his life and in the book it covers a lot of information about Geelong in the 1930's and 1940's. It is a great read - all the facts are very true - it mentions St Augustines boys home. The author is Tom Prior. Fascinating stuff. 3. Hello Pam, My family connection with Geelong was through my mother's family. She died in 2001, but I do have what I consider to be a most valuable family keepsake in the form of a catalogue of the estate of John Daniel , my mothers grandfather, which lists some 30 or so properties in Geelong that were auctioned by his trustees in 1903. Some of the lots have pencilled in what I presume where the sale prices of these lots. For example, Lot 1, on the corner of Maud Street and Latrobe Terrace sold for 27/6. (1 pound, seven shillings and sixpence). Lot 2, the next door property and on the corner of Latrobe Terrace and Ephrasia Street was sold to a Mr Champion for 20/-. If you think it would be interesting to your readers and we could do some research on the sales, I would be willing to loan the publication to you. Please contact if you are interested. He gives a mail address of P.O. Box 425 Booval Queensland in his 2001 email, but I have no way of knowing if this is current. He requires an SAE if a mail enquiry, and especially if you want your photo/photocopy returned. Usually he requires both front & back (if there is information on the back) and he sends short replies, with just enough information to show how he arrived at the date. He also used to say: send email address, but if he's left Optusnet, He may not now have an email account anywhere. Good luck, sorry I can't be of more help.
