Further to Robyn's info about Croydon - Chris Weirman's phone is 0747456125 and he can be reached by email at - croydonifo@bigpond.com We were up there in August; my grandparents were there from about 1888 to 1908. My father was born there. Thanks Dorothy, beautiful!!!! I have learnt another little bit of family history, He must have gone to Connawarre after they left "Ballanee" maybe there's a cemetery there. Do you know if it was "Connawarre Bay or Lake Station"? He also had "Coonooer" from Oct 1852 (little Patrick Rannie Kinnear was born there) . Croydon, for those not in the know, is in the top end of far north Qld. The locals and council have updated the place and in town it looks very nice. Local tourist officer, Chris Weirman, is a fund of knowledge. Sadly, around 1888, dunno about earlier, there were heaps of people looking for gold there. Mostly slightly out of town. The water was dreadful and the sanitation even worse so it seems. People died like flies. Guess the Irish survived by not drinking water! Well, my great grandfather did until 1888 when he died of 'local disease', dropsy, and other dreadful things. He left a large family, didn't they all, and his wife. The couple ran the local hotel at Mulligan's Camp, out of town. After her husband died, and then her son, she came to town and ran another hotel. With all those kids! Anyway, eventually she came to Brisbane and lived with her daughter Cecilia Gamble, and died at the ripe old age of about 84 I think from memory. I tramped over many grave sites, found an Irish cross fallen over, flooded and looking dreadful. Could not deciper the name of the person, so 'assumed' it was my great grandfather. Best I could do. Well, it COULD be his...........er.....er.... Because of the hot weather, lack of preservation, people were buried not far from where they died. I am sure he is buried on a property, with about 30 others, at a local area, but cannot have access to them all as the man who owns it does not let people in. Story goes that he purchased the place, knowing the graves were there, and was not supposed to 'fence them in', e.g. he was to make the fence do a dog leg, but of course, he didn't. How can people 'buy' consecrated ground?? Then not let the rellies go there?? Dunno. I am sure if he had to do without the small area where the graves are, and had access to them available, it would not affect his monetary return from the property. He has thousands of other acres. It is not god's own country. It is dry and rocky and I am sure he would not miss the few acres, but........... Sorry I cannot tell anyone about other goldfields. Chris Weirman is the man. There were heaps of goldfields, heaps of immigrants, all round Croydon. If anyone wants to contact Chris, ring the local council and ask for his email. robyn shaw. toowoomba.qld. Eve, Have you seen the book "The Woolshed: A Riverina Anthology" by Peter Freeman, published 1980 ? On pages 192 - 196 are sketches & photos of "Madowla Park", and some early history. No doubt you have tried the Ballan cemetery for the grave you are seeking ? Good luck......Wendy McLennan.
Robyn did you by any chance go near the Gibberton Goldfields not far from croydon? We have someone who died there in 1869 would be interested if anything is left at all? One Andrew in 1872, John 1856 no more date given by a fall of earth at chinamans flat and another in 1893 listed as Marr Mc Nauhton ( could this just mean married?) at sandhurst eaglehawk which is bendigo. There is also a John Mc Naught 28 yrs old single died fall down shaft Castlemaine 1884 10th Nov. http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/miners/mc.htm This link should let you check it out. hope it helps. Hi Elaine, I read you answer about Geelong Electoral Rolls. How do you access them? Does anyone have copies and would look up names for a dedicated lurker?? Gillian
Hi Ann, My husband's ancestors John and Mary Ann Devlin arrived on the Marco Polo in September 1852. Although they came from Ireland the Marco Polo sailed from an English port.. According to the shipping documents they were assisted migrants and sponsored by R. H. Kinnear of Connewarre where John worked for 12 months for 50 pounds plus keep. Connewarre is a small farming settlement between Geelong and Barwon Heads. This may give you a different lead in your investigations. regards, Dorothy Devlin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eve Anderson" <eanderson@bigfoot.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2003 7:20 PM Subject: [GEELONG] KINNEAR > Hello List, > I am a new subscriber from W.A.and am looking to find when and where and on which vessel my GGrandfather Robert Hill Kinnear and his wife Rosalie Magdalene Catherine and their two children arrived in Australia in 1852. Don't live in hope with the burial ground. I drove from Toowoomba, near Brisbane, to Croydon in far north Qld to find my great grandfathers grave. Found afghan camel drivers, chinese gold miners, but no great grandfather. He died in 1888. Local publican. Left a wife and a tribe of kids. Many people died up there and now some of the places where they were buried as now fenced of and private property. You cannot get to them. Had similar trouble with Grong Grong. Floods, cattle stamping over them, more floods (cemeteries are always put on awful ground to keep the best for grazing). Maybe you need to ask a bit more to verify that you can even get to the supposed place of burial. robyndehood. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eve Anderson" <eanderson@bigfoot.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2003 6:20 PM Subject: [GEELONG] KINNEAR > Hello List, > I am a new subscriber from W.A.and am looking to find when and where and on which vessel my GGrandfather Robert Hill Kinnear and his wife Rosalie Magdalene Catherine and their two children arrived in Australia in 1852. This family tracing is a most frustrating business, I have enquired of the now owners of "Ballanee" and the only grave on the property is his mothers. I found the graves of their other two children on "Madowla Park" n/e of Echuca. It has been classified and it was so sad to see the little graveyard and graves in such a bad state when we visited there in 2001.
