    1. [GEELONG] George Wyer
    2. Grahame & Rosslyn Thom
    3. Hi List I was reviewing my papers today and I found that I have a remote link to Geelong. My ancestors Charles James Bullivant had nine children including Julia Ellen Bullivant born Sydney 1824. In 1843 she married George Isaac Wyer in Sydney. In one of Charles James Bullivant's land transactions in Sydney in 1871 mention is made of George Wyer now of Sydney lately of Geelong. This is the only son of George Isaac Wyer and Julie Ellen Bullivant born 1843 in Sydney. It also says that George senior was lately of Melbourne and died there in 1860 and Julia died in Melbourne in 1870. Has anyone heard of George Wyer of Geelong pre 1871? Grahame Thom

    2. Ian Donaldson
    3. G'day Pam I have just recently found that one of my ancestors, Margaret Donoghue, died on the 12th December 1843 as a result of an accident in a dray. Her inquest was heard by Foster Fyans who was the acting Coroner at that time. Does your research include this period of time? Regards Ian Donaldson > I and another Geelong Family History Group member have almost finished writing up all inquests found in the Geelong Advertiser for the 1860's. If you have an ancestor whose death involved an inquest, we would be delighted to hear from you to perhaps 'add meat to the bones' so to speak of some historical family background to the deceased etc. These inquests will be complied into our 3rd Inquest book, in 2004.regards, Pam Jennings (co-compiler) >

    2. Janette Pfeifer
    3. Hello to Pam Jennings, It's Jan Pfeifer here. Early in Dec. I sent you info.re Charles Persen(Percy) Harrison a worker at Hirsts Woollen Mill. Well, on going through my files again today I've found some more wollen mill workers as follows:--- Godfrey HIRST was a wool manufacturer & owned Excelsior Wool Mills. He was born 6.6.1857 & died Geelong 1917. He was born Meltham near Huddersfield, Yorkshire & was married to Sarah CARTER born 1853 Meltham also. One of their children was Harold 1883-1934 who was a Woolen mill worker. He was married 1902 to Emily May TOMKINS 1881-1961 the daughter of John 1846-1920 & Harriet HARRISON 1849-1927 . Harriet is the twin sister of my ancestor Esther. Regards. Janette Pfeifer (nee Grundy)

    1. [GEELONG] Plea to new listers (and some oldies)
    2. J & T Williams
    3. Could I please add to Susie's recent emails on this and the Bellarine lists re protocols, at the risk of earning a reprimand, and make a plea, particularly to the expected new listers (old ones should know better, but some obviously don't). Many of us subscribe to several lists, as well as doing research on queries from other listers, and with our "other lives" to run also, probably do not have a lot of time to read all the messages posted to the list, even in digest mode. I read the headings and select the ones which look to relate to my fields of interests, and often have to simply delete, unread, those with vague headings such as "new to list", "relisting my interests", "new members interests", "reserching names", "look up please" and similar vague headings. Time simply does not allow the luxury of a leisurely read of all the listers problems, even though I was promised many times that retirement came complete with plenty of spare time (ha! ha!) If you want the most coverage of your query to listers, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, put something descriptive, and of interest in the heading, such as the surnames of families researched, towns of interest, type of lookup, etc. Also do not forget to appropriately revise the existing subject heading when responding, via the list, to a query. Sorry Suzie, I consider myself reprimanded in advance, and have slapped my wrist. John W (NSW)

    3. I am attempting to research the life of Henry Aaron Smith who was one of the original Batesford Village Settlers and became Postmaster in the mid 1850's. I am aware of the book references which were most helpful. If anyone can add even by way of anecdotal information it would be appreciated. In particular does anyone know in what decade Henry's timber Triple Gabled Home and store was demolished. Thanks - Alan Smith.

    1. [GEELONG] Prepare for newcomers to list
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Folks, This is just a friendly reminder for this mailing list - every year List Admins realise that a LOT of people get a new computer / internet access for Christmas and we get a LOT of newbies joining mailing lists who have no idea about the do's and don'ts and guidelines for using mailing lists. So, remember, we were all new at one stage and we all made mistakes (still do!) so be patient, try to set good examples and most importantly be friendly and helpful. And for those who may have forgotten, remember some of the basics ............... Geelong & District Mailing List Guidelines ........ http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdmail.htm Crossposting (same message to multiple lists) is NOT a good idea (unless of course you're a List Admin for multiple lists! <vbg>)! Bad language and flaming are frowned on and will probably result in instant removal from the list. Always use Plain Text for Mailing Lists (not html / fancy backgrounds / non-standard text etc.) Edit replies - don't leave all the text of all the previous threads of the message in your reply ....... remove as much of the original message from your reply as practical but include sufficient so that the thread (and potentially sender) of the previous message(s) is obvious. BE FRIENDLY and HELPFUL - you never know when someone will return the favour! Have a lovely Christmas everyone ............ Susie Zada, List Admin

The official Australian Place Names database actually shows three entries for Little Bendigo in Victoria at two different (but not too distant) locations ....... Little Bendigo (town / location) is near Castlemaine. Little Bendigo Creek and Little Bendigo Primary School are just near Ballarat.
