    3. Hi Peter, I've made some changes to my notes to include the two children born at sea. My information has come from various sources and mistakes have crept in and multiplied. Some of the birth dates may be baptisms dates and some of the death dates may be burial dates. The only way to be 100% is to purchase all the certificates from BDM and then to check them off against all other sources. Geelong Cemeteries trust lists Mary Ann as Sarah Ann Coombs. Perhaps she was known by two names. We seem to have two Marys or two Sarhas going at the same time. In due couse I will try to get to the GSV and have alook at the cd-rom of BDMs. Thanks Dean Name: Henry COOMBS1 Birth: 1 Sep 1822 Upton Noble Death: 1 Feb 1903 Ceres, Nr. Death: 1942 Barrabool Hills. Age: 80 Burial: 9 Jul 1942 Highton Cemetery Geelong. Methodist 2 * 254 Burial Memo: Retired of Belmont. Spouse: Mary Elizabeth ( Lillian ) Beck Marriage: 1886 Notes for Henry COOMBS Others may be better able to answer this than I, but according to my notes, Henry COOMBS was a bachelor of Upton Noble, of full age, when he married Ann HODDINOTT, spinster of the parish of Witham Friary, on 18 Feb 1846, by banns; Henry signed his name in the register but Ann made her mark. Henry's father was Thomas COOMBS (b. 1784), Stone Mason, and his mother Mary JUKES (b. 1779). Henry was baptised on 1 Sep 1822 at Upton Noble, in the South East of Somerset. This village had a population of about 300 when Henry was born, most of them agricultural labourers. Ann was the third of nine children of George HODDINOTT (1792 -1933) and Mary CLARK (b. 1795). [See the Hoddinott tree on David's other website.] Ann was baptised on 23 May 1818 [?] at Tytherington. Henry and Ann migrated to Australia in 1849 as Government Assisted Emigrants. They sailed on the 'Sir George Seymour,' a vessel of 850 tons, which left Plymouth, Devon, on January 9. During the voyage, the youngest of their children, Thomas (born 1847) and Louisa (born 1848), died and were buried at sea on February 15 and 26 respectively. Ann subsequently gave birth to a baby boy on April 5, who was christened Thomas. The Coombs family arrived at Point Henry, Victoria, on May 14 1849. They remained in the Immigration Depot for eight days before leaving to find their own accommodation in Geelong, where they were still living when Mary and John were born in 1857 and 1858. In the 1899 Australian census, Henry is listed as a farmer of Ceres, near Geelong, Victoria. He died on 1 Feb 1903 and was buried 2 days later at Highton Cemetery, Barrabool Hills. According to the burial records he was a Methodist. Ann was buried at Highton Cemetery on 29 Dec 1884. Migration details from: Florence Chuk (1987) The Somerset Years: Government Assisted Emigrants from Somerset and Bristol who Arrived in Port Phillip Victoria, 1839-1854. Ballarat: Pannard Hill Publications, and from Australian colleagues. Notes for Ann HODDINOTT Ann and her husband Henry Coombs and two children, Thomas 1 and Emma 12, arrive in the Port of Geelong on May 14th 1849 as assisted immigrants onboard the Sir George Seymour. They had spent 126 days at sea leaving Plymouth on January 9 1849. Henry is listed as a labourer. A Thomas and Louisa Coombs are recorded as died at Sea. On the balance of evidence Emma was probably not the child of Henry Coombs. Henry was younger than wife Ann and would have only been 13 or 14 when Emma was born. On both of Emmas Marriage Certificates she gives her fathers name as George Hoddinott. Unfortunatly, Emmas Death Certificate compounds the problem by listing Henry Coombs as the father. On mother Anns Death Certificate Emma is not listed as a child of Ann. Anns headstone in Highton Cemetery reads At Rest & In Fond Memory of our Dead Parents. Sources 1. Banns. Banns read at Witham Friary 11,18 & 25 Jan. 1841. 2. Jeanette Hellmstrom, Australia. An HODDINOTT & Henry COOMBS emigrated "Sir George Seymore" 1849 to Victoria, Australia. 3. Pam, For what it's worth... another tit-bit about Godfrey Hirst. His carpet manufacturing business is still known as Godfrey Hirst NZ Ltd, although it is many years since it was purchased by a man who continued to manufacture here in New Zealand. It is one of the top ranking carpet manufacturers in New Zealand. (Ref. Auckland phone book, and my husband who was in the industry for many years.) I must admit that I don't know specifically where the factory is, but there is a large store/warehouse here in Auckland - perhaps this is also the factory. 3. well maybe he donated to the local church, was a mason, was in the show society, or as owner of a property or place, he would certainly have lands department records and taxation ones. for a start i would try the local lands department or whatever it is called in new south wales, your local one could tell you, and write to them asking for details of his business, where it was etc. he would have to pay land taxes or rates, maybe the local council??? you have to start somewhere. try the lands first. robyn shaw. toowoomba. ----- Original Message ----- From: "alwynne mackie" <alwynnem@melbpc.org.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 01, 2004 10:33 PM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Geelong Inquests 1860's > Were there government pensions in the mid to late 1800s? 3. Hi Ian - no hurry whenever you have time or find other details I will be pleased to have them! I imagine the written notes may be transcribed from the offical Inquest papers at the PRO. We did not have the time to go and look at every individual inquest, and especially as the PRO was moving to North Melb etc.it was all too hard! If you get time to precise the information, I will be grateful.regards and thanks for your interest, Pam ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ian Donaldson" <allsure@iprimus.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 01, 2004 12:09 PM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Geelong Inquests 1860's > G'day Pam > > Next time I'm down at the records library I must look up your book. > > In regards to the Inquest, what I have, appears to be a modern handwritten > transcription of the proceedings which includes witness statements. 3. Alwynne, sounds to me like he may have changed his name if he was on the run so to speak from his debtors. What was his mothers name? or his wifes he may have used that or just taken one he fancied. Do you know his parents I could try a Vital records search on them possibly.? where is the wife buried? he could be there also. I assume you have the 1865 childs birth cert. It usually gives the fathers occupation too and who was the informant. Of course 1859, he may have taken off for the goldfields to redeem himself too. good luck Linda

    3. Many thanks for your reply, Pam. All I know is that he had a grocerery and other provisions store, first in Autumn Street, and then in Mercer Street. He got into financial difficulty and shot through just before bankruptcy proceedings were launched in sept 1859. His wife had another child in 1865 (in Geelong), so he may have returned later. The child was always known as his, and whether he was or not, for the story to have been credible he must have been known to have been around in 1865. After that there is no trace of him. There is the possibility that he was or became a seaman, but I don't know of any sources for that occupation. If you have any ideas, they would be most gratefully received!
