G'day List. Slightly off topic, but does anyone have the index number of the inquest into Thomas Chirnsides suicide in June 1897? He and brother Andrew are buried in Eastern Cemetery. Cheers....Bob

Hello Pat, I don't have this cd (limited means in old age) can you indicate how many marriages were not on the indexes? (Bit of an imposition, I know, but if I refer to the cd and there's only one (which could be named) I don't want to be taken to task by an irate purchaser who buys only for the one available) It will be just my luck that the marriage cd the registry has signalled will contain most of the marriages I have found unregistered and will make my article redundant! wrong for me....but man just emailed me for crouch who went to tasmania. hope he sees this....i had john crouch who married a eliza dunno who. he had a daughter, eliza, also known as crerech, eliza married ben shaw. he was the son of isaac shaw, convict and mary dunno who....dunno who is is a very common name for me....isaac came here, convicted, single and 'married' here. no permission to marry found, so maybe he married her but didn't church her. they seem to have had only the one son, married 1857, b about 1830, now i am wondering all sorts of things...maybe she was also a shaw and she had been before she was married to anyone, but married isaac later....have applied for her death certificate...all the index says is mary shaw...mostly unknown info (AGAIN) and isaac shaw also has mostly unknowns...why is it ME who always has dunno who and unknown...aaaggghhh. robyn. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marion Stainsby" <barwonriver@hotmail.com> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 18, 2004 8:46 AM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] The Larpent > Wrong CROUCHes, Robyn? Hi Carollyn, There are a few fairly well known / recognisable photos of local aboriginals in the area - most appeared in the Geelong News of the Week. The Geelong Heritage Centre have copies of these. Can you scan a copy (not too big) and email it to me so I can see if I recognise it? If they are locals and can be identified as such I guess the GHC is probably the most likely place - not sure if Deakin have an aboriginal collection in their special collections archive. Regards ....... I have 2 photos - an aboriginal man and an aboriginal woman. The photos are aged, on photographers card but have no name or date. They show signs of having been in a frame. They were in my late father's possession and I believe them to have come from his place of work, Strachan and Co., Woolbrokers of Moorabool St. I believe they may have been discarded when that company closed. I have compared them to photos in 'The History of Geelong and Corio Bay' but there is no match. I should like to identify them as past local aboriginal inhabitants and give them to the appropriate archive for safe keeping. > Carollyn Williams > > > > ==== AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT Mailing List ==== > Geelong & District Research Centres & Museums : > http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdresc.htm > >

Hi Fran, And that's exactly why you should NEVER trust an index and always keep pursuing the source - human intervention and errors. Unfortunately, people being people, it's very hard not to try to convert an illegible name into a familiar name - classic example and similar to your experience. My surname is FUSSEN (French-Swiss) but my grandfather's death in NSW was indexed as TURNER. It might sound a long way off but if you write it quickly and then look at the transposition it's not that far off the mark!!! Just took me more than six months to convince the NSW Registry to go back to the original registers for the date and district I specified because I KNEW it would be there!!!! Thank goodness I perservered and finally got what I wanted - that's how I found out how it was indexed - no way would I have found it otherwise <vbg> Regards .....
