G'day Gwen, Given the date of the letter [25 years ago] it is quite conceivable the lady has "relocated" in that period.. Cemetery records could be revealing. bfn John Gwen O'Callaghan wrote: >Hi, folks! > >Can anyone help with this query I received? > >"I have a letter written by a Mrs Ruth Hill, Vautier St, North Geelong in >1979. Hi Gwen, I checked with Ruth first and she's definitely the person who used to live at that address, who wrote the letter, and yes, Vivian is descended from Mary Gallagher. Ruth is not on email. Hello Margaret, I have no idea if there were people from Canton China on board - Symes' summary says "266 Chinese" - you would need to look at the passenger lists etc. yourself to find out if any more detail was provided. Hello List, I would like to thank, Susie, Sally, Patrick, Linda and Graham for their replies for my call for help with the ship's name. When I checked the name again on the certifcate after all your suggestions, I thought it looked like "INDIAN OCEAN", BUT to make sure I took it to a Optician, who kindly checked it for me as he had stronger magnifying glass than me, and it was the "INDIAN OCEAN", it stated on death certificate he had been here 7 years, so that made him landing in 1854. Thank you all so much, your help was greatly appreciated. Hello Susie, Did the India (arrived Melbourne with passengers 2 June 1855 from Hong Kong), have people from Canton China on board? Margaret Stickland
Andrew Elias ANDERSON married Amelia Mary RAWSON at The Leigh on 27 Oct 1858. Amelia's father, John RAWSON had opened a blacksmiths shop nearby, possibly Teesdale. Does any researcher have information on Rawson's blacksmiths shop? Both ANDERSON and RAWSON were landholders in the area. Are there maps which might show where please? Andrew ANDERSON was elected to the Teesdale East Riding school board in 1873. By 1876 he had left the area as he was mentioned in a petition for a school which had opened in Rupanyup North. John RAWSON moved to the Riverina near Lockhart at about the same time. RAWSON and ANDERSON are my wifes ancestors. Tim van der Poel Regards from, The van der Poel's Australia
Hi Patrick, The Indian Queen arrived 31 January 1855 (from Liverpool) but in Melbourne and Pat was quite specific in saying that the ship she was after arrived in Portland. If it wasn't specifically Portland, then you could add to the list the Indian Queen, the India (arrived Melbourne with passengers 2 June 1855 from Hong Kong), the Indian Ocean (arrived Melbourne with passengers 31 December 1855 from Liverpool) or even the Indus which used to sail between Melbourne and Newcastle (NSW) and arrived several times in 1855. Hi Pat, Could it be "Indian Ocean", arrived Portland Oct 7, 1854 from Liverpool with 420 immigrants? There is also reference to the "Duke of Wellington", arrived Portland Oct 4, 1854 from Adelaide with emigrants from "Indian Ocean" - it was then travelling on to Port Fairy.
