    3. Thanks for the links Tim. I have a problem accessing data as I live in a small country town in NSW where resources are incredibly limited and more focused on the local area than on Victoria and Tas. Our local library has a total collection of 7 BDM CDs for the whole of Australia. Two of the Victorian Indexes, nothing on Tasmania. Regarding the Tasmanian Archives, you can go to their website www.archives.tas.gov.au and use the link there or you can email them at archives.tasmania@education.tas.gov.au and ask if they can help you with your family research. At least that is how I first approached them :)) There is a charge of around $22 that is invoiced to you when they post out the results of their search, but they'll explain that when they get back to you. That's pretty good value in my book. (Check out the prices that the Bradford Archives charge!) I've been waiting a month now and was advised that it may be another 6 weeks before I get any results... the usual story, they are understaffed and overworked LOL!... but if I get even just one piece of the puzzle then it will be worth it. Sarah Cook is a lady without a past. Every document that lists her has unknown for parents and birthplace. If you go by the age given on her tombstone then she had her last child at age 56! If they can tell me one real fact about her then I will be in seventh heaven. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim van der Poel" <vanderpoel@onthe.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 05, 2004 5:45 PM Subject: [GEELONG] question > > >Have you tried the Gold Fields list? > > 2. 3. Hi Stephanie, A search of the National Archives web site(http://www.naa.gov.au/) ( produces COCK Arthur, SERN, (serial no.) 8238, POE (point of enlistment) Adelaide, NOK Father, Nicholas. You can order a digital copy of his service record. Takes about 6 weeks, I have done it several times. He is listed on the Nominal Roll for WWI All of which doesn't help you find his birth, but could add interest to his story. Judy Thomas. ----- Original Message ----- From: "steph-ken" <steph-ken@bigpond.com> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 05, 2004 5:38 PM Subject: [GEELONG] Ballarat Births > Hi Listers, > > I am a newbie, and wondering if SKS can help me please. > > Searching for information regarding my husband's Uncle Arthur, about > whom we have VERY little information. > > What we do have is:- > > Certificate of Discharge from the Australian Imperial Expeditionary > Force - "medical unfitness - not due to misconduct". for COCK, > Arthur, 1st tunnelling company, "BORN at or near the Town of > BALLARAT." > > Arthur's Discharge papers state that he was 45 at the time which was > 5/7/1919. > > So a DOB of +- 1874 for Arthur COCK. > I believe Arthur's parents to be Arthur & Mary Elizabeth Cock, nee > Hynes. > > Arthur's bro, my late F in L changed his name by deed poll in 1962 > from Cock to Cocks. > > I hope that SKS may be able to help, and look forward to your reply. > > Regards, > Stephanie Cocks, > Hot, Adelaide. > > > > ==== AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT Mailing List ==== > Geelong & District and Bellarine Indexes : > http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdbksrc1.asp > http://www.zades.com.au/bellhs/bpnmsrc1.asp > --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. What we do have is:- Certificate of Discharge from the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force - "medical unfitness - not due to misconduct". for COCK, Arthur, 1st tunnelling company, "BORN at or near the Town of BALLARAT." Arthur's Discharge papers state that he was 45 at the time which was 5/7/1919. So a DOB of +- 1874 for Arthur COCK. I believe Arthur's parents to be Arthur & Mary Elizabeth Cock, nee Hynes. Arthur's bro, my late F in L changed his name by deed poll in 1962 from Cock to Cocks. I hope that SKS may be able to help, and look forward to your reply. Regards, Stephanie Cocks, Hot, Adelaide.

    3. Hi List :) I am trying to trace my g g grandfather, JOHN CARTLEDGE who was originally transported from Nottinghamshire, England as a convict to Hobart in 1843 where he (we assume) met and married his wife, SARAH COOK in 1849. They had their first child John while in Hobart Town in 1849. I have the Tasmanian Archives doing a search for me but they have warned me that there is a long waiting period for results as they are swamped with requests like mine.. We know that they left Hobart Town in great haste shortly after JOHN was born and that they headed for Geelong where they had a number of other children (and buried one son, Edward and possibly a daughter CAROLINE as well) and then they headed off to Buninyong near Ballarat where they lived until they both died in 1886. His occupation over various documents that I do have is listed as Cutler (in England), Miner (in Buninyong) and blacksmith. His father was also listed as a blacksmith on his death certificate. So, perhaps he was a blacksmith while in Geelong as well??? My question is there any way I can trace their journey from Tas to Geelong and is there a way to find where they lived while in Geelong without actually purchasing birth certificates? :) Lyn in West Wyalong, NSW --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
