    1. Re: [GEELONG] Long lost cousin
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Judy, What a lovely story - thanks for sharing it with us! It also shows how different groups and people working together can help us find that extra bit of magic in our family history. For example, Lorraine Phelan is responsible for the research, collecting and production the book Geelong Swiss. The book was published by the Geelong Family History Group. Lorraine and heaps of other members of the GFHG are members of this list and regularly contribute both on and off the list. With our book indexing project, Lorraine and the GFHG had no hesitation in providing their indexes for our consolidated index. And so the world goes around!!!!! It's a nice feeling ....... I'm sure you'll have a lovely visit with your cousin in Geelong! Regards ....... 2. judythom
    3. Dear listers, I felt I had to share this with you, as it was through this list, and connected web pages etc., that I have caught up with a cousin I haven't seen for many years. Initially, I was browsing the Geelong & District Web pages, and discovered on the books index list a book called 'The Geelong Swiss' which had references to my MATTHEY family. I decided to purchase it, and imagine my pleasure to see in it a previously never known photograph of my g-grandfather, Alfred MATTHEY. A query as to the owner of the photograph, connected me to a cousin I have not seen since I was child. WE are first cousins, once removed, as Alfred MATTHEY is his grandfather. I am going over to Geelong at the weekend, and will be calling to see him and his family. As I was about 14 years old when I last saw him, I suspect he might see a few changes.:-) Thank you Geelong list. Judy Thomas --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Hi Pam I have a Sarah Jane Milkins, (daughter of James and Granddaughter of Paul Milkins, the convict). She was my Great Grand Mother and she states that she was born in Bambra in 1864 on her marriage certificate. She married Archibald Harper in 1885 at Colac and quite a few of their children were born at Pennyroyal. The LDS website shows 3 Harpers including my Grandmother being born at Pennyroyal in the 1890's. The wife of James Milkins, Sarah Elizabeth (Harris) died at Pennyroyal (6th August 1884) and is buried in Bambra cemetery. 3. Hi Rosemary, I'm not sure if there's a problem with messages direct from my email as I haven't had a reply to two previous messages - not since we sorted out your Digest / List / attachments problem. I have some extra information that I can send you from my architecture database as well as the section on Backhouse and Reynolds from a thesis on architects in early Geelong. I could insert that in a message to the list (although it would be a bit too long for the mailing list) but the extract from my database would have to be Acrobat (.pdf) format. I hadn't sent the files to you as I was waiting for you to confirm that you could receive the attachments. Let me know that it's OK your end and I'll send them. Regards ....... Susie Z

    3. Dear Jennifer, I'm not sure how to say a big THANKYOU. You have given me o much information I did not have on my Great Grandparents. I had sent for a copy of my Grandmothers birth certificate. Number 89 states it was Herne Hill. Residence of William ?Fulton New Town. Entry 90 10 September 1859 is Robert Clarance son of Benjamin Backhouse residing at ? Fulton Herne Hills. So looks like they raised children at the same time. I know the women were not mentioned on the Electoral roll, I guess they did not have the right to vote. On the Morrow Index, would there be any mention of Mary Jemima ? I have rather abandoned all my chores to put all this information in, before it disappears. I can now search for the ship they left on. The diary article by Glady's Seaton, would be interesting, if you could have a look at that when convenient. I will go off and digest this information. 2. JenniferBantow
    3. Hi Rosemary There are quite a lot of references for William REYNOLDS and even more for BACKHOUSE and the firm BACKHOUSE & REYNOLDS. The Geelong Advertiser (Morrow) index has the following for Mr & Mrs William REYNOLDS: 19 Apr 1855 daughter born 17 Apr at Skene Street 20 Jan 1857 son born 17 Jan at Herne Hill 9 Jan 1858 address Herne Hill near F. Bauer and Edwin Wood 15 Jun 1858 daughter born 13 Jun at Herne Hill 15 Aug 1859 daughter born 13 Aug at Herne Hill 5 Mar 1860 selling up, auction of effects Herne Hill 7 Mar (Herne Hill is a suburb of Geelong) BACKHOUSE was practising in Geelong from 1853. Under BACKHOUSE & REYNOLDS in the same index, one entry from a long list specifically mentions REYNOLDS: 20 Nov 1855 Wm Reynolds taken into partnership 17 Nov. and then at the end of the list: 23 Feb 1860 Leaving Geelong, business transferred to Young and Honey Market Square. Under BACKHOUSE Benjamin (Mr & Mrs) in the same index, also a long list, the final entry is: 23 Feb 1860 Herne Hill property effects for auction on 5 Mar Looks like the BACKHOUSE and REYNOLDS families lived near each other and sold up at the same time. Did they do other similar things? Mr and Mrs BACKHOUSE had seventeen children. From the Geelong Historical Journal, the 'Investigator' March 1971, an article 'Pioneer Geelong Architects' by P L Browne and G E Drinnan: In 1860 BACKHOUSE and REYNOLDS returned to England. BACKHOUSE re-emigrated and in 1861 began in Brisbane. There's also a BACKHOUSE diary article by Gladys Seaton in the 'Investigator' Sept 1978 mentioning REYNOLDS and a thesis (University of NSW 1969) by Craig Burton on the architecture of BACKHOUSE which I haven't seen but which may mention REYNOLDS. There are also references to the specific buildings they designed in various conservation studies. The firm had a branch business in Ballarat. If you'd like copies of any of the above in detail please let me know. Couldn't find a photo of William maybe because he left so early.
