    2. Liz Denten
    3. Hi all, Does anyone have access to the book "The Geelong Americans"? There is a Camilla Atkins mentioned on page 4. I live in NSW and none of the libraries here have it- not even the State Library. If anyone can help with what it says about her, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

    3. Hi Amanda I posted this question yesterday to this list, but I will ask you if you could please see if these names & places are mentioned in your 1858 Geelong Directory. I have been privileged to have received a part of a copy of a newspaper article that was written in Feb 1851. It describes a grass fire that burnt a large area at a place called Lake Golar. Names & places in 1851 mentioned are - Mr RAWLINGS farm. Mr Martin DENT farm about 1.5 miles (2.4 kms) away from Mr Rawlings. Lake Golar about 15 miles (24 kms) away from Mr Rawlings. Geelong is about 12 miles (20 kms) to Mr Martin DENT's farm. Is this enough clues to allow someone to give me an idea of where this is located & where or how would I find a map of this area, then & / or now ? I would be most grateful for any help please. 3. Hi list - just a brief description of where Pennyroyal is. Pennyroyal is a small farming community, situated between the towns of Deans Marsh and Murroon. The Otway Ranges back onto Pennyroyal. Other bigger towns within half hour of Pennyroyal, are - Lorne, Birregurra, Winchelsea and Colac. Pennyroyal does not have a school, having closed a few years ago. Dairy, beef and sheep farming are the main occupations. There are a few B. & B. type places and raspberry growing in the district, is a tourist attraction. Some of my family still live at Pennyroyal and I visit there regularly. Regards, Shirley (ex Pennyroyal resident).

    3. Hi Robyn and Justin, You won't get anything from the council on rates - particularly in 1874 - all of those rate books are at the Geelong Heritage Centre and certainly not indexed at that period. You would need to personally search through the rate books (microfilm copies) to find the details or pay for a research request. Of course, his wife, if she was alive, may have moved after his death and therefore not necessarily any way of connecting the two from the rate books. Is his wife mentioned on his death certificate? Did he leave a will or property that required letters of administration? These are far better options for finding the sort of information you asked for than the rate books - which, by the way, are invaluable, but it really depends on what you're looking for. And the death in 1898 I mentioned may be the right person in which case hopefully the death certificate would confirm deceased husband and children. Regards .........
