    1. [GEELONG] Quadrille Office
    2. Hello everyone, Thank-you one and all for your input on this conundrum. Every bit of research and suggestion is appreciated. If anyone ever comes across a directory for the late 1850s or early 1860s that lists Malop St East I'd love to know if the Quadrille Office evolved into something more recognisable! With thanks, Jenny Coates Harkaway, Vic

    1. [GEELONG] Munday Family
    2. Alberta Maggs
    3. Dear Ann, Do you descend from the Templestowe, Mundy family? My late brother-in-law Allan Box who grew up in Lilydale descended from this family. His Mundy is spelt without an 'a', being just Mundy, so maybe it is a different family. His mother was Mavis Poyner. His great grandmother was Elizabeth Ada Mundy born at Heidelberg in 1865. She married Joseph Moore Poyner in 1887. They settled in Lilydale. Kind regards. Berta Maggs

    3. Thanks Susie - am trying to get live descendants if possible at this stage. I am researching the hotel for teh Geelong Heritage centre Open day on Sunday as the present owners have renovated the building and have brought in some artifacts that they discovered while doing so. The building has quite a history, including a ghost and a supposed murder victim, so in time it would be good to piece it all togther! 2. As a music teacher, I have been familiar with QUADRILLE as an old dance form, but in checking my Webster's dictionary (9th Collegiate--old as sin!) I find that it is also: n.1. group of knights engaged in a counsel... 2.four-handed variant of ombre popular esp in the 18th C. 3.a square dance for four couples made up of five or six figures chiefly in 6/8 and 2/4 time: music for this dance. adj. ....(ca.1885)....marked with squares and rectangles. So much for my input. Bless you all helping each other in this genealogical quest! Marylyn D. Adams Ocala, FL USA

    2. IAN DONALDSON
    3. G'day Thanks to Jennifer, Bob & Liz for your replies. They were most helpful. The period that the studio was in operation fits nicely in with the information that I have. My gggranny was born in 1833 and the person in the photo appears to be 30-40ish so that is in the range of 1865 -1886. I will check the books suggested and see if I can get the date a little closer. When she first came here in 1853 her occupation was that of a dressmaker, so I would guess that if it was her, she would have the latest fashion! Thanks again for all your interest. Regards Ian Donaldson > > I have just recently acquired a copy of a photo of a woman that I would like to call my g.g.grandmother! > > However (as usual) there is nothing on the picture to indicate just who is in the photo, but it has on it Wilmot & Key, Geelong Portrait Gallery, 31 Malop Street Geelong. > > The woman depicted is wearing what I would call a "bustle" style dress, with a rather ornate hat or perhaps a bonnet. > > Could anyone give me some ideas as to when that studio was in business, and what time period would a 'bustle" dress be worn. > I'm sorry about the description, but ladies fashion is not my strong point! 3. Hi Ian, Sorry, I can't help much with the photo other than to recommend a book "Dating Family Photos 1850-1920" by Lenore Frost. I don't have it myself, but my sister does and says it's quite helpful. BTW, I have some Donaldson's in my tree. They originate in Tasmania- John Henry Donaldson b. abt. 1821 Scotland and Mary Beach. They had 13 children. Is this familiar ?
