Hi Folks, Just thought I should let you know that one of our members - Lorraine Phelan has been VERY busy, as have some other generous contributors and the Geelong and District Consolidated Book Index now has ........... 81,045 entries!!!!!!!! So even if you've checked before, you might find it worthwhile checking again at ... http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdbksrc1.asp You might also like to look at the list of books that have already been indexed, those that are "in progress" and those waiting to be "adopted" at .......... http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdbkind.htm And if you are aware of any books that you think would be a good addition to the list to be indexed, please let me know full details - Title, author, publisher, date etc. - so I can add it to the list to be "adopted". And of course, if you'd like to contribute more to this terrific project by doing some indexing, have a look at ........ http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdbooks.htm to see how easy it can be! Have fun searching for your names - remember less is best when searching - i.e. if you were searching for CORBETT, then look for CORBET which will also pick up the CORBETTs for you. And of course it's not just people's names in the index - place names, ships, general subjects (I ALWAYS include onions and potatoes when I'm indexing books on the Bellarine Peninsula because it was such an important aspect of our farming region - if you don't believe me, just search for onion! <vbg>). Anyway, enjoy and many thanks to Lorraine, Pam and other contributors to this project. Regards ....... Susie Z
Thanks Ada, Stephanie.

Oh dear ..... I meant to say ..... because that's where heaps of ships from the UK landed - at Point Henry - smack bang in the middle of the Geelong / Bellarine area. Hope that makes more sense ......... Susie Z
Hi Linda, Judy was right in suggesting those books and if you really look into it there are 100s of books that could be added to the list depending on what aspect you're looking for. Two things to remember - there were reason why someone LEFT one country and reasons why someone WENT TO another country. examples - the Irish Potato Famine. So much depends on WHEN it happened (sorry if the caps sound like shouting - they're just there for emphasis! <vbg>) Different colonies in Australia had different reasons at different times for encouraging certain types of people ....... NSW needed lots of women at some stages, VIC needed family settlers to open up the land, etc. etc. Why did a lot of people settle around Geelong / Bellarine Peninsula etc. .... because that's where heaps of ships from the UK landed them! If your ancestors were assisted immigrants then there are two books I would strongly recommend you reading ....... both by Keith Pescod. "Good food, bright fires & civility : British Emigrant Depots of the 19th Century" and "A Place to Lay My Head : Immigrant Shelters of Nineteenth Century Victoria" published in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Another set of three books definitely worth reading on this subject - published as part of the Victoria 150 celebrations - Professor A.G.L. Shaw was chairman of the management committee for these books .... "The Victorians : Arriving" by Richard Broome "The Victorians : Settling" by Tony Dingle "The Victorians : Making Their Mark" by Susan Priestley Hope that helps ........... Thanks Susie, I've been in touch with Patick O'Sullivan and have received heaps of information.. We are both stuck at the same area.. I was hoping that the people I mentioned, subscribed to this list & might be available..I was hoping that I could make contact with them. Apparently the names I mentioned are direct descendants of Patrick Cassidy. regards....Scott At 11/03/2004 Thursday01:19 AM, you wrote: >Hi Scott, > >Have you checked our Surnames of Interest site? I'm looking for Carol Ryan & Margaret Lowry who's messages I have found on a Google search of Rootsweb. It relates to the Cassidy family of Geelong since the late 1850's. Thomas, Michael & Patrick. I'm hoping they're still subscribed here or that someone can put me in touch with them. Thank You Scott
G'day Thanks to all those who responded. I really could not get my mind around that relationship!. The site that Cate from Sydney suggested, to be really helpful. http://lewisgenealogy.com/relate.html I have been using that chart to sort out other relationships. regards and thanks again Ian Donaldson
Annette No I don't know if their are headstones, the details were on the Western Cemetery microfiche, you could ring the Cemetery and inquire. Mary's record mentioned W.Sangster (son -in-law) and John's gave Corio Street as address Margaret. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Annette Davis" <adavis45@optusnet.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 10, 2004 12:01 AM Subject: [GEELONG] John and Mary Findlay > Hi Margaret > > Thanks for your quick reply. I recently had a question asked about why people chose to move to the locations they did on arrival in colonies and what led people to choose areas to settle in. Does anyone know if the govt has any records or recommended employment to certain squatters etc? As few would be able to buy land immediately I would think. My answer to the first was that some newspapers in Uk ran adverts and people knew of others who had gone downunder, also on board ship I have heard of those in the know giving talks on the great southern lands and no doubt influenced people on where to go. Would be interested to hear others info on this. Some of ours were early settlers in the bellarine/geelong area and wonder why they chose this.? Linda
Thanks John, I'm glad it was a "common" error! Steph.
