    2. Marion Stainsby
    3. Oh, God bless the Geelong Book Index! I have answered my own question by finding a very explicit reference to Balding's map there - inside back cover of Gladys Seaton's "The Ashby Stpry". I presume this redrawing is part of the very old and battered original which I once saw at the Geelong Historical Records Centre, even though it doesn't go as far south as Balding's own house. Thank you, Indexers! Marion

    3. Can SKS please tell me the year in which Robert Balding, Geelong Town Surveyor, drew a map of the town? I want to give it as a reference, but see that my system has broken down somewhere and I haven't noted the date. This could save hours of fruitless searching, because I don't have a copy of the map on hand, so I'll be EXTREMELY grateful! Many thanks Marion

    1. [GEELONG] Family FOALKES / CROOKE
    2. Sarah Bos
    3. Hi Am wondering if any of you can help or point me in the right direction. I am trying to find out information about a James Christopher (or Christopher James) FOALKES. I know he was in Geelong (I think in New Town) in 1844 and 1845 (from the Baptism records of his children - Mary Ann and James). He was married to an Ellen CROOKE (although I don't know when or where they married). Beyond this I have little information. My question is two fold: 1. Has anyone else got links to or have any information on the FOALKES' of Geelong. 2. I live in the UK (but return to Melbourne once a year) so am unable to spend a lot of time searching archives myself - can anyone suggest the best places to look for this period of time to try and find more information about James and also the best places to look to see if I can establish if there might be a convict connection (I have found records for 2 James FOALKES who were convicts at the right sort of time but have no way of making a definite connection.) Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Sarah

    3. Hi Dianne, Today I noticed your reply to Daryl re St Mary's Geelong baptisms. Between 1845 & 1855 my Great great grandparents John & Catherine (nee DELANEY) TANNER had a child between 1845 & 1855 which was not registered. The child died before Aug 1856. The children I already have are: John Henry b 25 May 1843 Daniel b 25 Oct 1844 James b 28 Sep 1846 Martha b 28 Sep 1846 (died before Aug 1856, no death found) William b 12 Jun 1849 Frederick b 6 Dec 1850 (G Grandfather) Catherine b 2 Oct 1852, Bendigo (died before Aug 1856 no death found) Ellen b 11 Aug 1856, Plenty Could you please check the baptism records for the additional TANNER child? Is there a register of burials for St Mary's that may contain the burials of either Martha, Catherine or the unregistered baby, please? Many thanks for your help. 2. Daryl K Povey
    3. Hi Listers 4 CROHAN chn were admitted to the Geelong Orphanage on 8 Dec 1860 with both parents listed as dead. The chn were... Francis CROHAN, age 6y John CROHAN, age 4y Patrick CROHAN, age 3y Christopher CROHAN, age 1y Their parents appear to have been John CROHAN & Bridget CURTIN from Co Clare, Ireland who married in Melbourne in 1853. The births of the above chn do not appear to be in the Vic Pioneers Index. I am trying to estbalish if the John CROHAN, b. Geelong (not in Pioneeer Index) who married Anastasia McMAHON (dau of Michael McMAHON & Anna Maria BONNER) in 1882 and had 2 daughters in Casterton, Victoria before Anastasia died in Casterton in 1886 is the same John CROHAN from the Orphanage. What happened to John CROHAN? If anyone is researching this family then I would be interested to hear from you. Regards Daryl Povey

On the 9th Jan 1866 Mary Riley gave evidence that she was in the bar at the time and did not see anyone interfere with Costello. Jeanette Stewart was not in the bar at the time. The rings produced were from a Mrs Elizabeth Stainsby who Jeanette Stewart had left with her possession over a week ago and had not came back for them. 3. The open day at Geelong Heritage Centre displaying the History of Sport in Geelong was simply terrific. Some marvelous artefacts such as the historic 'battered' cricket bat, the embroidered ties and the silver rose bowl trophy, quite wonderful to see. A very big effort to coordinate all those sporting clubs and congratulations to Pam and the Friends of the GHC for succeeding. How did Rod Charles manage to produce that booklet as well as everything else he does? I remember a sports exhibition to do with Geelong's Olympians opened by Geelong's athlete Lee Troop at the Wool Museum a while ago when the then Mayor Mr Peter Mullins undertook to form a Committee to plan for a Geelong Sports Museum. Does anyone know if this Committee exists? Jennifer >A huge thank you to all who braved the hot weather to enjoy our >Sporting Display today!
