    3. Thank you Wendy! I'm very grateful - that's definitely the right person, as the address in Highton is spot on. I'd tentaively had her down as the Jane HONEYCOMBE who arrived in Victoria on the MARIA HAY in July 1854, but have no confirmation of this, except that her age (28 in 1854) fits the "in her 85th year" on her tombstone (died April 1910), IF we assume that the phrase really means "aged 85", as so many people use it. But it's not watertight. Her connection with South Australia is new to me though. Laurence's brother Caleb is said to have arrived in Victoria from Adelaide. I've checked an on-line shipping list for SA 1851, but not seen any HONEYCOMB or MOUNTJOY there. Does the GEELONG CORNISH book give any sources for its information (and did Jane travel with her father William? There's always further to go, isn't there!) I appreciate your help. Best wishes Marion

    3. G'day Mary Had to nick down "Pako", so looked for 236 for you. Guess what? If the 236 of today was your 236, then it has been replaced by a new shop development in the last few months. It is near the corner of Gordon Avenue, on the south east corner, and lately was a garage and house [ I seem to recall ]. The numbers for the new development should have been 232-242 going by the numbers that I could see either side. I have taken a photo of the new development if you would like to contact me off list at [email protected] I had thought that you might be able to see the old buildings on Google Earth, but the photo has been taken since the block was cleared. If you have Google Earth go to 38 08 38 29 S, 144 20 52 62 E and you will see the vacant block on the corner. Hope this hasn't disappointed you too much? Let's know if I can assist further. I sometimes get to the Geelong Heritage Centre and could look into 236 Pakington Street further for you. Hello Grahame, William SMITH sentenced in Salford Dec 1842, came on the ROYAL GEORGE <no further notes on this man> **On the SIR GEORGE SEYMOUR arriving 20 Mar1845:** George BARTLETT sentenced at Oxford Feb 1843 >convicted 10 years larceny in a dwelling at Oxford. A labourer born 1818 , married, read and write imperfectly, taught trade of rugmaker. ( It seems that rugmaker was one of the least skilled trades taught, and I would think, the least useful to earn a living in frontier Australia!) Henry SPRAGG sentenced at Oxford Feb 1843 >convicted 7 years larceny from his master. A labourer born 1814,a widower, reads and writes imperfectly, taught trade of tailor. Refused to accept wages offered for on shore employment and was dismissed from the ship to find his own employment. **On the MAITLAND arrived 13 Nov 1846:** Thomas CRAPPER at Oxford Dec1843 >convicted 10 years burglary.born 1828, single, reads and writes, taught trade of shoemaker ( trade used to good effect in Australia, seems the "top" trade taught to model prisoners) William WARD at Oxford July 1844 >convicted of horse stealing. born 1815 a miller and baker, married, reads and writes, taught trade of carpenter (another trade for model prisoners) John EDEN at Oxford July 1844 >convicted larceny. born 1823, a farm labourer, single, reads and writes, taught trade of rugmaker. Henry GOULDING at Oxford Oct 1844 >convicted two terms of 7 years each, so 14 years, felony, born 1818, a linen draper, taught trade of weaver, widower, reads and writes **On the SIR THOMAS ARBUTHNOT 29 Dec1846** Daniel CLIFFORD at Oxford March 1845 >convicted 10 years, house breaking, born 1828, taught trade of tailor, single, reads and writes James WOOLLEY at Salford August 1843 >convicted 7years, stealing silver spoons, born 1828, a carpenter, taught trade of carpenter (he may have been an instructor), single, reads and writes. 3. Hello Grahame I'm going to be a bit more systematic: Exiles known to have been sentenced in Oxfordshire. William SMITH sentenced in Salford Dec 1842, came on the ROYAL GEORGE arriving 11 Nov 1844, one of only 21 who were sent as a trial shipment to see if they would be accepted. They were quickly whisked off to squatters who had agreed with their patron, William Yaldwyn, who was returning after a trip to England, that they would take the men. I think we can safely say that these were handpicked model prisoners, expected to take advantage of their opportunity. On the SIR GEORGE SEYMOUR arriving 20 Mar1845: George BARTLETT sentenced at Oxford Feb 1843 Henry SPRAGG sentenced at Oxford Feb 1843 STRATHEDEN pardon list was not included in the Victorian Public Records series VPRS 89, so not able to be transcribed. I will check the "dispoal lists later for this ship. On the MAITLAND arrived 13 Nov 1846: Thomas CRAPPER at Oxford Dec1843 William WARD at Oxford July 1844 John EDEN at Oxford July 1844 Henry GOULDING at Oxford Oct 1844 On the SIR THOMAS ARBUTHNOT 29 Dec1846 Daniel CLIFFORD at Oxford March 1845 James WOOLLEY at Salford August 1843 John SHAW at Salford Feb1845 On the SIR JOSEPH SOAMES 8 Oct 1847 Samuel GARDINER at Oxford Oct 1842 John SMITH at Salford Oct 1843 Richard PERRIN at Oxford July 1845 Johnthan THOMAS at Salford Sept 1845 On the ANNA MARIA 6 Jul 1848 None On the EDEN 4 Feb 1849 Thomas GORDON at Salford April 1844 William CHAUNDY at Oxford Mar 1847 William HATTON at Banbury Dec1843 William WHITE at Oxford mar 1847 I will return to Part 3 of this Oxfordshire exile list with my next post. 1. Re: [GEELONG] Exiles from Oxford
    2. Ada Ackerly
    3. Hello Graham , I will have to answer your query over several messages, because I cannot type for very long: All those named did, indeed, arrive as exiles on the ships named. In my early research on recidivism of the exiles, I collected little snippets. First, of the 1728 exiles who landed in Port Phillip 266 aliases are recorded both from the original lists and the prison records 1851-1861 and 188 prisoners are named as "exiles"in those records. In the period 1845-1850 the police admitted, because exiles arrived "free" they were treated as "first offence" when they strayed, and, as the police received no lists of these exiles, they were unable to say if persons brought before their courts were "exiles" or really free immigrants, even though the government of NSW (then in charge of Port Phillip) twice sought the figures to pass on to the British government. An estimate was made of 79, with no records to agree or deny. My research in the limited records in the dates I indicated suggest that one in six returned to crime. This means that 5 in 6 either were good citizens, or too clever to be caught. We do know that many moved to other states (and NZ) where, particularly if they lived with an alias, they are unable to be used in the statistics. So here is the first note I have: > Chaundy, William, arr PP on Eden in 1849> His wife and child arrived to join him on 28 Aug 1850. (He was obviously well-behaved, and likely had a written approval by his employer. Not everyone managed such reunions, even after repeated applications.) > Clifford, Daniel, arr PP on Thomas Arbuthnot in 1847> There were two with this surname on this ship, but their given names were James and Lewin. (I will check my notes later to see if they had Oxfordshire connections.) Sorry, the pain in my arm and hand is taking over. I will have to stop for at least 24 hours. Regards Ada Ada Ackerly.
