Hi Carollyn > Hepburn in 'Tale of a City: Geelong 1850-1950' page 27 "While there seems to be some dispute as to whether a shipment of cattle brought to Port Phillip by alexander Thomson from Tasmania in the summer of 1835-6 was he first to be introduced tothe district - a rival claim being made for a herd overlanded from New South Wales by Gardiner, Hepburn and Hawden - there seems to be no doubt that the first sheep were sent over from Tasmania by George Armytage. They were landed at Williamstown and left in charge of a man named Charles Franks and a shepherd, both of whom were murdered by blacks." (I like the implication that the shepherd wasn't "a man"!) Cheers Marion
Hi again, Amanda! I still have a lot of MOUNTJOY material you sent me, and shall send you a private e-mail shortly. In the meantime, many thanks for the look-up and information. I have very little on HOSKINS - though my father bought some of their land when the son Philip died in 1938. And you've filled in a gap or two on JOHNS. If anyone else is following the JOHNS family: I was shown a letter from his son William's daughter Winnie which says that William married Elizabeth PHILLIPS, not Elizabeth HARRISON, in 1892, at the Congregational Church. Malvern. And William's sister Louisa Jane (Louie) married Ted RANKIN and founded a football dynasty in Geelong. She dies aged 33, and Ted married again ca 1914. Best wishes Marion

Dear Listers Having had so much help from a previous appeal, I'm now asking if someone might be able to fill me in on these references from the Book Index: The Geelong Cornish : A Record of some 19th Century Families: Henry JOHNS p 25 Philip HOSKIN p 24 Bullockies, Draymen & Horsemen 1839-1859 Edwin HOBBS p 49 Drownings in Geelong & District 1836-1900 Edwin HOBBS p 44 Many thanks Marion
Can I have a book index look up , please, if any one has these titles. I am repeating a previous request re Henry FitzGerald - namely would any one be in a position to do lookups in any of the following titles (all taken from the Geelong and District Consolidated Book Index) 1. Geelong : events in history 1802 - 1972. P. 14. Reference to Henry Fitzgerald. 3. Pivot Tree (Part Index to no. 9 - no. 64). No. 555. P. 10. Reference to Henry Carr FitzGerald. 4. Wild and Wondrous Women of Geelong 1838-1859.pp. 24 and 30. References to Ann FitzGerald. I really need these for elimination as much as information and will gladly pay for photocopies if lookups or scans are not possible. Just hoping someone will point me in the right direction, many many thanks, Nicola Jennings (Dublin).(Researching Henry Carr FitzGerald).
Thankyou Grahame, I cannot go to the PRO currently, so I would be delighted to be relieved of the task. So I'll leave it with you. Good luck. The exile ships are to be found in the "assisted passengers lists" and there are (usually) two lists: the list sent with the ship from England, and the "disposal" list which shows who the men went to work for, etc Make sure you view both for cross reference. There are some discrepancies, but probably only about ten out of the 1700+ that I originally found years ago. Keith's book is a monumental work, and I had, previously, not had need to check any entries, so it could be that these few are all the errors there are to find, or perhaps his source was not in the Victorian shipping, but another source. It wouldn't be the first time that one list does not compare against another. Regards Ada Ada Ackerly. Has anyone aware of where the Brearley Tanner was located? Thanks Don
Hello Grahame, To make my typing and use of records easier (read "lazy") I typed directly out of two records: The VPRO series 89, "Pardon of Convicts" , an original record sent out from England with each ship, and collected together by the Government of the day, the "Stratheden" was missing from this collection. I used my own notes to check if the exile had been convicted in Victoria ... so I can vouch for the accuracy of those. Then I used a recently published book, instead of going to each shipping arrival and disposal record as I would have, normally, had I not been having trouble with the use of my arms/ hands. "Convicts to the Port Phillip District" collected by Kieth M. Clark I have now been informed of an error... Samuel GARDINER (Exile) was found guilty of receiving a stolen spoon (not broom) from the Radcliffe Infirmary Regards,Margaret Thank you Margaret! Please correct the record I sent to you for Ann. I have corrected Clark's data. So I looked at another, William HATTON who arrived on the "EDEN' whom Clark listed as " an eagle dealer, taught trade of tinplate worker". The shipping list says "convicted 14 years, larceny on his indictment, labourer taught trade of tailor, unemployed at Melbourne, sent by ship to Portland with other exiles". I paused before I typed "eagle dealer", it seemed so obscure. Then I was worried at "tin plate worker" because it is the only time I had seen this trade taught in prison. I'm not sure where Clark sourced this information, but it troubles me. Then I took a quick look at William CHAUNDY, who also arrived on "EDEN", and found Clark lists him as a "letter carrier" and the shipping disposal list says he is "a waiter and general servant" who was also sent on to Portland for employment. I'll have to double check that ...and others! So it looks as though I will have to go back to the individual shipping lists to be sure the information is as sent from England. So much for resting my arm & hand! Please apologise to your Oxford researcher, and I apologise to the list. Chastened. Regards Ada Ada Ackerly. Melbourne Formerly Ackerly Docusearch

Many thanks, Elaine, Wendy, and Ruth. What a lot of nice people one's meets on this list! That Bristol 1841 entry looks very promising, Ruth. I have been given a lot of details - some of them conflicting! - from various descendants of the prolific MOUNTJOY clan, and have tried to sort them out with the IGI and census entries, etc. But I haven't been able to find any promising HONEYCOMBs on-line, so this is a real step forward. My primary interest at present is to establish whether Jane's father William was the William HONEYCOMB who attended the Highton Wesleyan Church in 1867. We are working on a history of the church, and the three MOUNTJOY brothers whose run included the site of Lorne were very active in that church for many years. It looks as if Caleb's wife Louisa HARWARD was his first cousin. Laurence and his first wife, Mary Ann (HEARD) both arrived in Victoria on the "Prince Regent " in Nov 1852, with their cousin Richard MOUNTJOY (of Ceres) and his family. According to one of Richard's descendants, "Mary Ann died and was buried on the roadside near Naracoorte, as they walked and rode fron Adelaide. This info was given to me by a descendant of Caleb Mountjoy who says that it is right. Caleb is supposed to have entered Australia in Adelaide, (no records of this though) so we are not sure whether Lawrence was walking to Caleb or on his way back." Laurence and Jane were married in 1855, according to the Victorian BDM index, but I don't have any details. The death date for William HONEYCOMB, and his age, come from the Digger - Pioneer Index. I don't think the SA indexes are on-line to give me the date of Mary Ann's death - does anyone know? With much appreciation Marion

Some time ago, there was a request for information about early Irish settlers in the Geelong district with a view to collating that information. Have I missed any notification of this publication or is it still in the making? Marie Lockyer
