Thank you, Dorothy, that's spot on - and it actually sums him up nicely for the sort of book we're trying to write about the church. With the aid of the IGI and our PROV and Victorian BDM Indexes, I've already found out more about William Barnes and his wife and nine children. The challenge now is to condense it! Your help is very much appreciated, and gives me exactly what I needed. You also kindly went the extra mile in looking up the Clyde Company. The Book Index refers to the volumes of the Clyde Company Papers edited by P L Brown, which I have. The William Barnes who is referred to in them is mentioned several times in letters and documents, and was apparently a businessman in Tasmania at an earlier date than our man. Many thanks Marion
Hi Marion, According to the same book, P206, "the Clyde Company was formed with Captain Wood and the Dennistons of Glasgow in 1836. Company disbanded in 1857." No mention of Barnes. regards dorothy ~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Marion Stainsby Sent: Sunday, 1 April 2007 5:04 PM To: GEELONG List Subject: [GEELONG] Victoria and Its Metropolis Dear Listers Can someone please help? I am trying to identify members of the 1867 Building Committee of the Wesleyan Church at Highton, and with the wonderful help of all sorts of people, and the references on the Geelong Book and Cemeteries Indexes, I can more or less pin down 15 of the 17 men listed (and most of their wives). The two missing are William Hill (far too many Hill families, unless some descendant can establish the right one!), and William Barnes. I note a lot of references to the Clyde Company Papers for this name in the Book Index, but don't think he's the right man. However. Stewart McAdams' Card Index, expertly typed by Pam Jennings, has a William Barnes of "Mt Moriac/ Highton / Cressy /Katamatita " and refers to the 1888 "Victoria and Its Metropolis". If some kind soul has this book, and can copy out what it says - in literal detail, as I may want to quote it in print - it would be an enormous help. I am wanting to be able to make some generalisations about the background and progress of this group of people, without the danger of being proved wrong by some inconvenient fact. We are wanting to make our book a resource for future local and family historians, if only by gathering together a lot of information from many varied sources and finding what doesn't add up. Hi Marion, I have said book and here is the detail from page 293 on William Barnes of Katamatite. "Barnes, William, Katamatite, was born in Cambridgeshire, England, in 1839, and came to Victoria by the ship "Omega" in 1855. He was farm labourer for a time in the Geelong district, and then rented a farm on his own account and carted to the diggings for a few years. He was next farming for two years at Jan Juc, after which he selected 30 acres in the county of Hampden, and finally went to the parish of Katamatite, where he selected 280 acres, and has since purchased an additional 600 acres, which he devotes to farming purposes." Doesn't give much does it? - simply whets the appetite !! regards dorothy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Marion Stainsby Sent: Sunday, 1 April 2007 5:04 PM To: GEELONG List Subject: [GEELONG] Victoria and Its Metropolis Dear Listers Can someone please help? An invitation is extended to everyone to visit the BHS Museum Court House at Drysdale on each Sunday in April (1.30 to 4.30) to have a look a the PROV Travelling Display of 'Lucy's Story'. It shows the various PROV records used to trace a person's life in the early days of Victoria - from shipping, inquests, land transactions, wills, name changes etc and how researchers today can use these same records to trace our own families. We shall be delighted to welcome you all! Kind regards, Pam Jennings (BHS)

Hello to Marion Stainsby & others, I've been interested in the emails recently to the list re the JOHNS family. Harriet Ellen JOHNS married 29.6.1882 in Highton,Geelong to John Wilkins HARRISON born 14.7.1856 in Banyuke in the district of Tower Hill / Belfast..now Port Fairy. Well, John is the brother of my great grandmother Esther HARRISON born 6.4.1849 in Fen Stanton,Huntingdon., England. a twin of Harriet who married into the Tomkins family. Esther had my grandmother Elizabeth Alice Maud HARRISON on 17.8.1876 & she married 30.4.1904 to Edwin CHANT. Esther also had a son Charles Persen (Percy) HARRISON 16.5.1882 who married c1908 to Nessie Rogers. The "Persen", Charles's 2nd name probably comes from "Persian" the ship Esther & family came out on. Esther married 29.10.1890 to Frederick Wm.CLARKE in South Geelong. I was pleased to see all the siblings of Harriet JOHNS & have now added them to my file. ------------------------------- Now re the HOBBs line. Louisa Jane (Louie) JOHNS married 1882 in Highton to Edwin Walter (Ted) RANKIN. In my files I have Ted's parents as Walter RANKIN & Sarah Austin HOBBS 1852-1927. Sarah's parents are John Lowe HOBBS 1826 & Ann AUSTIN. I have HOBBs back to a marriage 23.1.1759 of a John HOBBS to an Elizabeth BELLAM possibly in Bucks. Edwin HOBBS born 1822 is the brother of Sarah Austin HOBBS's father John Lowe HOBBS. Years ago many Geelong surnames used to come up in conversation at my grandma Chant's home at 2 Frederick Street Newtown, now Cumberland St. I didn't know then if they were family or friends, but I know now. Hope I haven't bored people with the above. Regards, Janette Pfeifer nee Grundy born in Geelong too. (Niece of late Ivor Grundy 3GL footee announcer) I hope I haven't bored people with the above. Regards, Janette Pfeifer nee Grundy born in Geelong.
Hi everyone, my greatgrandmother Hannah Virtue lived around the Geelong area. She named her son Thomas Avalon Molloy(Malloy). I have been told one of the homesteads on the Austin estate was named Avalon. Would there be any photos of it. Does any one know if I could trace if she ever worked there. It was later given to the Brotherhood of St Laurence, does this still exist. It justs seems such a funny name to be given to a baby. It was said baby Thomas was bought up in an orphanage, but lm wondering if infact he was helped by the brotherhood. Thanks for any ideas Janet _________________________________________________________________ Advertisement: Your Future Starts Here. Dream it? Then be it! Hi Ada, Pam, Susie, Lorraine and Rosalyn Just got the following message from Oxfordshire. I can't believe all you wonderful people taking so much time and trouble to get the information for me and even questioning established records! For your information to feed back into your list. William Chaundy was a letter carrier here and was retrained as a mat maker. I have found no record of waiter and general servant in any of the prison records here for him up to the point of his disposal to the ship for the journey. Likewise Hatton, I can't imagine that "eagle dealer" is correct - looks like awful writing and a literal translation! He was taught the trade of tailor, confirmed by his prison record before disposal to his ship. Thanks to everyone. Carol cheers Grahame
