    3. Hi, I was looking through the archives and found some information in an old thread[2002] about a sarah whitehead who died in old geelong gaol in about 1857. I think the poster was a john whitehead? and she was the second wife of his GGGrandfather..I tried emailing but it bounced so I am guessing he may have changed addresses or no longer be a member. I would love to hear any further information on sarah if anyone has it please.. thank you..janine

    3. Hello Betsy Sutherland (b1837) was first married to a Thomas Thomson in 1854 and migrated to Australia. They had a son Alexander Thompson(b1855). Her husband drowned. She then married Alexander Armstrong (b1823) in 1859, and had eleven more children. The second one was Jean Sutherland Armstrong who married Rev. Alexander Stewart. Alexander Armstrong died in 1890 at Warrambeen. Interestingly, Alex Armstrong's first marriage was to a Barbara Thomson (b1821) in 1851. I believe they all came from Kildonan in Sutherlandshire, Scotland; and surmise that they all knew each other or were inter-related before migrating to Australia. 3. Hello Stephanie & Carollyn Unfortuantely the Rev. Alexander Stewart below does not belong to my family tree......it was just wishful thinking on my part as my William Stewart who settled in Geelong in 1853 had a son Alexander in Aberdeen Sct. to his first marriage, prior to moving to Victoria with his second wife. Alexander was baptised by Rev. Alexander Stewart in Scotland, but this was in 1840. Thank you for your replies. Seems Sarah herself died in the Geelong Gaol two years lateras a "lunatic".in 1857 Inquest papers indicate the Elliotts had connections with an Hotel "Help me through the world" in the Leopold area. "Wild and Wonderous Women of Geelong 1838- 1859" pge 75 published by the Bellarine Historical Society contains extracts from my research at the time.. hope this helps, bfn John Whitehand janine wilson wrote: > Hi, I was looking through the archives and found some information in an old thread[2002] about a sarah whitehead who died in old geelong gaol in about 1857. > I think the poster was a john whitehead? and she was the second wife of his GGGrandfather..I tried emailing but it bounced so I am guessing he may have changed addresses or no longer be a member. > > I would love to hear any further information on sarah if anyone has it please.. > > thank you..janine > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > For on-line indexes and information on Geelong and District > http://www.zades.com.au > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >

    3. It is not unknown for details to be incorrect on headstones and the index quoted has been transcribed directly from the headstones - could be an error there too for any number of reasons. Indeed my grandfather's dates were wrong on his headstone as an aunt inadvertantly misinformed the stone masons! The BDMs would be the most accurate and thus the cemetery data has grains of correcteness to it and need to correlate correct data using all sources I would think - the Stewarts webpage as a basis. I have just had what I thought was Henry Broderick married Catherine Kennedy/Kenefick (thinking a spelling error) with daughter Penelope, and Penelope marrying twice with 2 lots of children. Checking BDMs there was in fact 2 Henry B's marrying 2 Catherines (Kennedy AND Kenefick) and both couples having a daughter Penelope. Dates all very close. 1. Re: [GEELONG] Henry ADCOCK
    2. Marion Stainsby
    3. Hi Sandra Thank you very much for all that information on the ADCOCKs. I'm especially glad to know what happened to Ann Maria after she was widowed - I had wondered whether she had had more children by another husband. I have been in touch with Gail before, and she and other ADCOCK descendants have contributed bits and pieces which I am building up into a picture. I relied a lot on George Jones's book for details of Thomas ADCOCK, who came out in 1849, and of Edward, who arrived in 1864 and is very prominent in our church records. In case other readers are interested in ADCOCKs, I want to prevent possible confusion over what seem to be two Henrys. The first - our trustee - was Ann Campion's first husband (1827-1863). The second was his nephew, George Henry (1860-1931), son of Henry's brother Edward. I am told that George Henry was known as Harry - and I relish the fact that he became the principal of a viticultural college, seeing his father Edward was such a staunch Methodist and probably a "wowser"! George Henry was born in Horncastle, and it would be he who named his house "Hyrnecastre" after the Saxon name for that town (meaning "a fort in a corner", according to various websites). I'm told that he married Edith INGAMELLS on 16 April 1884 at Chilwell, Geelong (probably Noble St Wesleyan Church - unless Edith belonged to another denomination, but her surname does have Methodist connections); they had four sons :- Bertram, Lancelot Harry, Garnet I [ngamells?], and Guy Rollo. At celebrations in 1914 for the Highton church jubilee, George Henry was the chairman at a weeknight gathering, and it was said that the minutes of the meeting where it was decided to build the second, freestone church, which still stands today beside a modern brick one, were in his father's handwriting. G H's sister Annie was a noted worker in the church, and was presented with an organ of her own when she married. Her descendants can be traced in other areas around Geelong, often in connection with Methodist churches. If you are interested in pursuing the ADCOCK link any further, I have a photograph which I took in the late 1840s of the hill in Highton where the nurseries used to be - now covered with houses since Geelong has spread much further since my childhood, let alone the ADCOCKs'. Many thanks again for your helpfulness, and very best wishes with your own researches. Marion

    3. Thank you, John. This is very interesting, and I'll certainly look up that book online - and also the booklet at Wesley. When I was living in Melbourne in the 1970s I once spent a couple of happy days staying at the parsonage and going through their records in pursuit of a couple of families. But now, alas, they have been whisked off to Melbourne, and I'm back living in Geelong, and it's got beyond me to follow them to Elsternwick! I do appreciate your interest and your kindness in volunteering this information. Good luck with all your own researches. Best wishes Marion

    3. Marion and Sandra, my wife and I called into the Wesleyan Church last Tuesday and met the Rev Paul Stephens. He told us that at the formation of the Uniting church all churches were required to forward completed registers to the Uniting Church Centre (Headquarters) in Elsternwick. The current marriage register started in the 1890s and is large enough to handle a couple of hundred years of marriages, earlier register presumably were sent to Elsternwick. In a room at the back of the church (Yarra Street end) is a small museum of items that were not sent to Elsternwick. It includes items from the other denominations churches that combined into the Uniting Church. Of great interest to us was a series of photo montages of all the ministers of the Geelong Wesleyan Church. We were able to take a digital photo of the Rev John Cope who married my wife's ggrandfather Carl Erickson from Uusikaarlepyy (Nykarleby), Finland and ggrandmother Wilhelmina Ellis from Mount Duneed (born in Elstead, Surrey) on 22 October 1870. In their pamphlet rack they have an 8 page church history handout. Using Google you can find a 390 page thesis (book) on the Wesleyan revival missions throughout Australia in the 1800s and you can see why many small communities like Mount Duneed built their own Wesleyan Churches which were visited a couple of times a month by a Minister from Geelong, John Sebire, Lilydale Marion Stainsby wrote: > Hello Sandra > > I have been away over Easter and some messages have been deleted, but > I saved yours to make a comment or two. > > According to a list of ministers published in the "A Century of > Victorian Methodism" ed.
