Are there any electoral rolls or census for the 1860s in the Geelong Area. I am still trying to find my Grillet/Grellet connection in the area. Kaye www.bananatv.com/familytreechecklist.htm
Where do I find the Electoral rolls for Geelong and who would have been included on them? I am looking for an Edward Mellish and his family Ellen (Borrows/Borrowes). Edward Mellish I believe was in banking and finance in Geelong. Jo Mellish

Thanks very much for your response Robin. I've already had a discussion with someone else on the Maria GOODWIN/OSBORNE folk and decided it was not mine. Hi SAndra, My Mary Ann was teh daughter of William Osborne convict exile on tthe Mailtalnd in 1846 and Maria Goodwin daughter of Convict Thomas Charles Goodwin and Sarah Harrington. Spencer had previously bee married to her older sister Elizabeth who had died in childbirth. WIlliam came from leek in Staffordshire. Where did your George com from? He arrived in Williamstown in Novemebr and I have not been able to find anything about until his marriage to Maria in Geelong in 1852. William was born c 1826 his father was GEORGE OSBORNE mother Sarah (Spilsbury?) He had at least one brother John b c 1828. It would be interesting if there was a connection. regards ----- Original Message ----- From: "SOMERS" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2007 5:07 PM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Sawyers Arms Hotel > Hi Robyn > > I am interested in this posting...my research is OSBORNE. Hi Robyn I am interested in this posting...my research is OSBORNE. Do you have any other information on Mary Ann CLARKE nee OSBORNE i.e. Birth Place, Marriage Place?? Could there be a link for me?????? My George OSBORNE was a Licensed Victualler in Geelong. He was born in Bristol UK and emmigrated to Australia in 1853. His family in Bristol UK are listed in the 1841 and 1851 Census and then I lose the girls completely as I haven't been able to trace their married surnames. One of his sisters was Mary Ann OSBORNE. MAYBE?? she also came across to Australia! Anything else Robyn? G'day Robyn >From "Geelong Hotels and their Licensees' by WJ Morrow and I Wynd, there is only one mention on page 24 of a Spencer Clarke, from 1900-1907 at the "Fyansford". No mention of the Sawyers Arms, but entries for licensees finish in 1907. Hi listers, My ancestor Spencer Clarke and hi ssecond wife Mary Ann nee OSborne, were at one times the publicans at this establishment. I gathered this inforamtion from 1) Spencer Clarke's death certificate, 1916 2) Geelong Cemeteries burial Index 1916 3) Son Spencer Osborne Clarke's WW1 enlistment papers.1916 I have current photographs of the hotel in Newtown but I have little information about the hotel in the period up to 1916. I have no idea how long Mary Ann styed there after Spencer's death and would be interested to know if there are any records which could assist me in finding more about the hotel and its residents at this time. Hello Bob I have looked up notes from the late Stewart McAdam's card index of inhabitants of the Barrabool Shire, and he has the following for a Charles Foster who could be your younger Charles: Foster, Charles Waurn Ponds Children: Edward 1894, Herbert 1897, Ruby 1900. He gives as his sources the ratebook entry for 1876, the Waurn Ponds School Register, and the Poundkeeper's Register 40 1878. If this is your Charles, it should give you a later date for his possible death. Hope this is of some use. Marion
I have sent Bob the listings from Pioneer, Federation and Edwardian CDs. Also suggested searching on http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servlet/bdm_home Gillian

Hello Deidre, I guess that there have been hundreds( possibly thousands) of families involved with the Geelong Hospital throughout its history- Could you be a little more specific please..? In what capacity, what time frame etc." This could make your query much more fruitful... regards John Deirdre McDougall wrote: > Can skp please help me I am trying to find the surname of the family > involved with the Geelong hospital > Cheers > Deirdre > [email protected] > > >
Deirdre Will need more information as to what name you are referring to. Geelong was established as a town in 1838. The 'Geelong Infirmary and Benevolent Asylum' was opened in 1952. By 1924 it was the 'Geelong and District Hospital (Kitchener Memorial [for Lord Kitchener]) when the benevolent patients were transferred to Ballarat. In 1966 it became 'The Geelong Hospital' and in 1998 it became 'Barwon Health' with the amalgamation of The Geelong Hospital, Grace McKellar Centre, Surfcoast Community Health, Geelong Comm Health and Corio Comm Health.
