Hi Folks, While researching a totally different subject, I came across the list of cab owners being assessed for licenses (December 1877) for 1878. There were 48 licensed cabs in Geelong in 1877. I thought it was a lovely and possibly useful list, so I've added it to the Geelong & District web site at ........... http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdcabs.htm Have fun ........... Susie Z
Hi Janette / Anne / Dorothy, In case you don't have these details ......... James Alfred PITTARD, 20, bootmaker of Autumn Street, Geelong born Bristol, Somerset son of James PITTARD and Ann WARR married 22 February 1866 at Christ Church, Geelong Annie DREW, 20, spinster of Austin Street, Geelong born Iveston, Devon daughter of William DREW and Annie SEARLE Regards ............. Hi Janette, well, there's often a surprise in store for us locals at Bellbrae - now I can add a Gundry relative. Have you heard the latest about the proposed subdivision on Gundry's Road? Anyway, back to business, now that the world knows - thank you Anne - that my filing is in a box I have found the Follett connection. Generally my Pittards are from Drayton, Somerset. Yes, Mary Pittard b: 2/11/1829 to John Pittard 2nd, and Elizabeth (could be Callard, Templeman or Latty). She married John Follett on 5/9/1850. I don't have Mary's death info either, but I do have the 2nd marriage of John Follett to Martha ?. Can we assume it is Mary's sister Martha - date of birth is correct, so too are her parents' sirst name names. Unless further proof comes to light, I think we can. Now, I don't think the world will want any attachments, so if you'd like to give me your address, when I get this stuff computerised, I can send it to you. regards dorothy
Thanks Robyn for your lookup, an ancestor of mine stated that her father was Francis Neville on her death certificate. Alwynne, That sounds like the right place. I'm transcribing Walcott 1861 & it seems to be all 3 & 4 story terraces with tenants ranging from Doctors to laborers with a mob of kids. I found a pickie at <http://www.art.com/asp/sp-asp/_/PD--12263468/SP--A/IGID--1640754/Axford_and_Parag....> I googled Axford building Walcott uk. It's under art.com it's a Giclee print by John Nattes item #12263468A. Not a very inviting place but I don't suppose they had much choice then. Good reason to come over here. Cheers. I have a note that she stayed in UK but she actually died in Vic, Aus. Dorothy has all her Pittard info in a box & was in the process of getting it out when I heard from her last night. She thought there were 12 kids born to James & Anne. I have death certs for James & Anne but the writing is too small to read the kids names & they got chopped off I think in the photocopier. There seem to be twelve names on the list. Dorothy will let us know what she has later. Do you have marriage certs for Mary & Elizabeth???? See what you think of this lot & get back to me, they may be cousins to James Alfred. I haven't gotten back that far, yet. James Alfred's parents were James PITTARD gardener & Ellen surname unknown. Walcot is very close to The Circus, Bath, so although it was a separate parish, it was in fact pretty much in the heart of Bath. Hi Everyone My name is John Dwyer, I was born and raised in suburban Melbourne but now live near Bathurst NSW. I've had an interest in genealogy for most of my life, but was really bitten 6 months ago. My fathers forebears settled in Geelong & districts - Gnarwarre, Mt Moriac etc. Surnames I am researching from the area are Dwyer; Curtain/Curtin; Gurrie/Gurry; Fanning; Wood; Keogh; Ryan. Bizarrely I live in an area rich in Dwyer's - just not mine! My grandfather Edward John Dwyer was born Mt Moriac in 1883 and married Ellen Veronica Wood at St Mary's in 1907. They had 5 children - Eric 1908 (my father); Gladys; Leila, John (Jack) & William (Bill). The family settled in Carlton/Richmond areas of Melbourne. My great-grandfather was Thomas Michael Dwyer, born Gnarwarre in 1852, a farmer and policeman who married Elizabeth Gurrie in 1878 at Mt Moriac. Offspring were William (1880), Mary Jane (1882), Edward (1883), Anastasia (1884), John (1885) & Thomas (1890). Thomas Michael Dwyer died in police service, Little Myers St Geelong in 1894 and is interred at Eatern cem'. Elizabeth then remarried a Nicholls and had James (c1899). Thomas was a son of William Dwyer (about 1817 in TIPP) & Mary Curtain (variously Curtin/Carti/Cotten on certificates) who were wed at St Francis Melbourne on 4/2/1844 by Fr Patrick Bonaventure Geoghegan. I believe at the time William was a farmer at Heidelberg. Mary was also from Heidelberg. Witnesses were Patrick King & Ellen (?)Geary (?). William died aged 36, Mt Moriac, in 1853 and is interred at Eastern Cem' also. Snippets of research suggest Williams parents were Matthew Dwyer & Fanny Condon but I have not confirmed this as yet. Elizabeth Gurrie's parents were Edward (died Mt Mo 1907) and Anne Connelly from Co. Meath. So this is a quick look at the swiss cheese of my knowledge - boy, there are a lot of holes! If anyone recognises anything here, or can help in any way at all, your contact would be really appreciated. Thanks and Regards Johnno
Hi Susan, I appreciate your offer to help find the Thomas Gillett family/ies. Thomas Gillett and Elizabeth Jane Ballantyne were only married two years when he died in 1882 and they had no children. Interestingly, she was eventually interred with her first husband Simeon Pittard in Coburg Cemetery. She died in 1911, aged 69years. Family-lore spoke of him moving out to Lara prior to his death and that there was a very 'odd' relative referred to as the Black With/Widow - obviously not Gillett family-lore!! The fact that Elizabeth Jane was twice widowed suggests to me the 'title' may refer to her. Any help would be greatly appreciated. regards dorothy ~~~~~~~~ Hi Dorothy, I am connected by marriage to two GILLETT brothers from the Lara/Geelong area, who married two sisters - my GG-aunts. Hello Kaye, I have tried to find info on Thomas Gillett who married the widow Elizabeth Jane Pittard (Ballantyne)in 1880. Thomas Gillett, supposedly born in Scotland, died in Geelong 1882, buried Eastern Cemetery, Geelong. He was the registered ratepayer of land on the Portarlington Road, Moolap from 1871-1882; he was a Thatcher/Farmer. There are many Gillett families around Geelong and Lara. I have made contact with three and they either don't know, or don't want to know about Thomas. Perhaps connected? regards dorothy ~~~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Kaye Vernon Sent: Sunday, 13 May 2007 10:07 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Electoral Rolls 1860s Every chance Dorothy www.bananatv.com/familytreechecklist.htm -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dorothy Moore Sent: Sunday, 13 May 2007 9:52 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Electoral Rolls 1860s Hi Kaye, is the name definitely Grillet? - any chance of being Gillet? thanks dorothy ~~~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Kaye Vernon Sent: Sunday, 13 May 2007 9:21 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Electoral Rolls 1860s Are there any electoral rolls or census for the 1860s in the Geelong Area.
