    3. Hi Robyn William & Alexander are also common names in my ancestors. Do you have any connections to the Cruickshank name in Aberdeen as my Stewarts married into this family....Alexander, my great grandfather being Alexander Cruickshank Stewart/Stuart named after his grandmother's maiden name. I haven't been able to get back that far, only to James Stewart who married Susannah Stewart in Alvah, Banff in 1784. I wonder if there could be a connection between our families! 1. [GEELONG] COOPER of Highton - & Modewarre?
    2. Marion Stainsby
    3. Is there some very kind person out there who has access to the Digger Index, and could tell me anything of the family of a John COOPER? I posted this appeal unsuccessfully two years ago, and with deadlines approaching an answer becomes even more desirable: > A Geelong Advertiser cutting date 1914 describes a Mr COOPER of > Melbourne speaking at the Diamond Jubilee of the Wesleyan Church at > Highton. He stated that when the stone building was opened in 1868, > there was no organ to supply music, and his mother "raised the > tune" for the first hymn. The tune, he said, was "Simeon". > > We have photos at the church of an elderly "Mr & Mrs Cooper". It > would be great to know more about this lady, her maiden name etc., > for our church history. I have found details of a Mrs John Cooper whose maiden name was Hannah Bird, which would be a wonderful name for a singer! But the births of 5 of their 7 children were registered at Modewarre or Mount Moriac from 1858 onwards (two others had been registered at Ashby and Geelong in 1855 & 1857). A John Cooper held land on Fisher's Hill in 1861. It is a very common name, but if it is possible to search the Digger Index for another John COOPER family somewhere on the Barrabool Hills that would be very helpful. Can someone tell me what other places would register Highton births in the 1860s? I would be most grateful for any help or suggestions, Thank you! Marion

    3. Hi Susie - another great find of yours!! Some goodies from the Geelong Advertisers which you may care to add to relevant names on the list. Regards, Pam Jennings 24/3/1877 Geelong Advertiser A cabman named WINGROVE was summoned to appear at the Geelong Police Court by the Inspector, for preventing another cabman named LANE from obtaining a 'job'. The hackney carriage law does not allow a cabman being off his rank unless engaged and it appears that Wingrove had been waiting at the Victoria Hotel for fully an hour and when in the act of moving off, had obtained Lane's fare, the latter having signalled from the first position in the rank to come over. Of course Lane considered himself wronged and demonstratively informed the public so. The Inspector was a witness to the whole occurrence and a fine of 10/- was inflicted with 2/6 on Wingrove. Later is was said that STONEHAM, Wingrove's employer, struck Lane who has taken out a summons against him and Stoneham will have to appear within the next few days. (see 27.3.1877) 24.12.1877 Geelong Advertiser Public Notices advertiement for Annual Inspection of Hackney carriages 14.8.1877 Geelong Advertiser Mr Tweeddale, Inspector of Hackney Carriages received special instructions to prevent cabmen from obstructing the street in front of Mechanic Institute by backing their cabs into the kerb ad thereby preventing private vehicles having free access to the doors of the Institute. The stand for licensed hackney carriages is in the centre of the street ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susie Zada" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2007 12:11 PM Subject: [GEELONG] Hackney Carriage owners in Geelong 1877 > Hi Folks, > > While researching a totally different subject, I came across the list of > cab > owners being assessed for licenses (December 1877) for 1878. 3. Hi Anne, It was from the Christ Church (Geelong) marriage register - also gave Geelong addresses for both parties so definitely doesn't look like Ballarat. Regards ......... 1. [GEELONG] Re Searching for William STEWART & family in the 1860's
    2. Joan
    3. Hello listers I have found my gg grandfather William Stewart b Banff, Scotland, 1815 and his wife Helen nee Grant and their 2 daughters Mary & Frances emigrated to Geelong in 1853 on the ship Childe Harold. William died in 1869 as a result of an accident. Helen was William's 2nd wife but I am descended from his first wife Jean Paterson who died in Banff Scotland possibly at the birth or just after the birth of their son Alexander born November 1840, my great grandfather. Alexander did not come to Australia with the family, [he would have been about 13] but he did come here prior to 1873 as he married in the Presby. Church Sale, Victoria [shown as a farmer in Sale] but I cannot find his entry into Australia nor where he may have been living in Victoria. I have not been able to find him on the 1841 or 1851 or 1861 census records in Scotland. However on Alexander's death record in 1927 in Sydney, it states he was in Victoria 35 years and 45 years in NSW [he moved to Orange, NSW where he was a telegraph linesman about 1878.] This means he must have been in Victoria about 1847 when he was only 7 years old. This is only approximate as the years do not tally up with his death date, also I know that the information on death records is only as good as the person who was the informant knew about the person. . Are there any land records or any type of records which may help me with my search for Alexander please. He was still a farmer in Sale Plains in 1876. Thank you for any assistance. Joan
