Hello Kaye In these pages, the book describes the development of settlement in Belmont. This section is about the subdivision of the last 60 acres of Dr Thomson's pastoral run, "Kardinia", which by the 1890s was "confined between Colac Road [ie High Street], Thomson Street, and Mount Pleasant Road" - and one should add the Barwon River as its north boundary. The name Jorgenson is among others who are listed in the ratebooks in 1910, though not having been there in 1906 - "perhaps some 25 houses in all". I hope this is of some help. Good hunting! Marion
Does anyone have a copy of the book South Barwon 1857 - 1985 I am searching for the Jorgensen family and have found the name on the index for the books for the Geelong area. It is page 50 I would appreciate it if someone could look it up for me. Many thank Kaye Vernon www.bananatv.com/familytreechecklist.htm
Ada, I too am particularly interested in Williamstown history, especially in John Peter Armstrong who was in PP from 1835 - 1842 as far as I can distinguish. He was often in command of small vessels, but I have lost him after 1842. If you ever come across him I will be most happy to hear from you about this man, who I have spent many years researching. He always distinguished himself as "John Peter" Armstrong. cheers Jenny Fawcett ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sallie Ramsay" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2007 2:07 PM Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Williamstown area list? > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Ada Ackerly" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Monday, July 16, 2007 5:07 PM > Subject: Re: [GEELONG] Williamstown area list? > > > > I'll try to answer any query you have on Williamstown > > > > Regards Ada > > > > > > Ada Ackerly. Unfortunately I didn't save the thread . I believe George may have been an English trained Prison Officer and held a position as Governor of Geelong Gaol. Some of his family have been linked to education (Geelong Grammar) and Williamstown. Check the Archives of this list for some additional contacts. bfn John -- John Whitehand Melbourne Australia ~ a Linux (Ubuntu"Feisty Fawn") Desktop ~ http://home.vicnet.net.au/~whitehaj/index.html

Hi Elizabeth, Have you contacted the gaol? A lot of research has been done when (and since) it was set up as a museum. Also you don't mention what period - directories for the relevant time frame may help. And of course, if it was 19th Century then you should find something in the Geelong Advertiser indexes at the Geelong Heritage Centre. Regards ........... We have a family yarn that a rel worked at the Geelong Jail. Is there a list of Governors/other workers? His name was George Furnell Elizabeth
Hi Chris, Australia has nothing similar to the English census - they were done but not kept - there are small parts of some, mainly in New South Wales or the early part of the 19th Century when they were called "Musters" - too early for Victoria. For "local" Geelong information, your best option are the various Directories - some on-line at ......... http://www.zades.com.au/geelong/gdtopic.htm Also, local rate books can help but of course neither of these options with give you the family members, just the head of the house. So although it appears we are behind the UK in resources we more than make up for it with our BDM indexes and certificates - ours are so superior to the English ones!! You don't mention where you live but Vic BDM Indexes are available at most larger libraries / genie centres etc. (older ones on fiche, newer ones on CD) In Geelong - Geelong Heritage Centre, Geelong Regional Libraries, Deakin Uni (Waterfront), LDS FHC Centre, and local historical and family history societies. Can someone answer a possibly stupid question please? After gaining so much info from the English Census details, does Australia have such records. Were they taking Census details too...Geelong in particular for me? Regards Chris

Hi Elizabeth, Whilst Googling for your FURNELL name query, I found another reference to the surname. There was a reference to a Harry FURNELL, a brother of Herbert Giblin FURNELL (mentioned in the other email) and a son of George William FURNELL (English born gaol governor). Harry played for the Carlton F.C. Hope this will be of some help to you, one way or the other. See link below - http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index.php?page=Harry+Furnell Regards, Shirley.
Hi Elizabeth, There is a reference on Australian Dictionary of Biography, online edition - to a Herbert Giblin FURNELL 1898 - 1973, who was a son of George William FURNELL, a gaol governor from England and his 2nd wife, Florence Ellen HERBERT. There are references to Geelong. For your information. This is the link - http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A140264b.htm Regards, Shirley.
