The GFHG subscribes to many interstate and international journals. These are available at our meetings for members to borrow. Every few months we then take the older issues to the main Geelong Regional Library (Johnstons Park, Geelong)where they are available for anyone to borrow. We invite you all to enjoy these magazines which may help many of you researching overseas where it is sometimes difficult to obtain information. Alternatively you are most welcome to join our Group! Kind regards, Pam Jennings
Marion, I was trying to sort out this dead end before my father passed away. Unfortunately he died in May , before we found this scenario. I will certainly tell everyone when we have proven it.............well not sure how we do that 100% but we will try. I would like to check census for 1860-1870s in Geelong or near vicinity for Schulz JErgensen and Grellet and see if they were all living nearby. Hi Ada - us Geelong girls will not be at PRO for a few more weeks so we shall leave it to you! I tried my digital camera at PRO last week and it worked a treat!!! If you care to send me what you take on disk, I am happy to index it for you if it helps with your arm and other indexing work! I also cannot find any ref to BOUCHIER in my lime-kiln family connection, the name also seems to suffer from various spellings, sometimes an 'R' is added etc. Again, thanks from everyone who appreciates your diligent research and love of a mystery! Hi Ada, I'm absolutely 100% certain that we can arrange some volunteers to help with this - particularly with transcribing the names / details if you photograph them or helping with photographing them. You only have to say what you think we can help with and it will be organised - to your explicit instructions! <vbg> It would be wonderful to get a list of teachers in the National Schools in 1858 for our Geelong & District Region so anything we can help you with you just need to yell (loudly!). Thanks Kaye, that makes it clear. I had interpreted your original posting as meaning by "his father was a Grellet" that somehow Carl Schultz was the Grellet's son, which was very stupid of me. Of course your interpretation makes very good sense, and I don't think it's too far-fetched by any means. Hi Susie, A message to the sick ... hang in there, the sun will soon be shining! And to Geelong friends: John BOUCHIER I have found, claims he was a native of Clare, claims he arrived in Sept 1854 and, because he is unemployed "is deprived of attending any place of religious devotion". I didn't know they charged to enter church ??? I'm trying not to be waylaid in my indexing of applications to the National Schools Board 1854-1862 for employment, but the persistance of this chap caught me. He even wrote to the Board to say that, on a visit to Kyneton he had met some of his old countrymen and, as he wished to drink to their health and to old times in Ireland, he requested the Board to send him an order on the Kyneton bank to facilitate this! So I don't think he is your lime-kilns chap, which is disappointing for me, because now I'll be tempted to interrupt the work on the index to satisfy my curiosity. Jenny Carter (whom I met at the Dead People's Society on Sunday), cannot understand that I have not got into shipping and BDMs and Asylums and I tried to explain my self-discipline to complete the indexing in hand. I don't think she was convinced. How could I not try to find the answers? Anyway, a real find. A listing of all the teachers employed in 1858 in National Schools. I'll draw off all the Geelong ones probably tomorrow, and type them up in a message. Its in VPRS 880/p0 unit 63 ... but I have it booked for aweek or two, so don't any of you enthusiastic Geelong girls try to take a look for a couple of weeks, please? please? If I can work out how to use my SLR digital camera I'll probably photograph all the sheets, both the general list and individual schools, and type them in at home. That will be quicker than my handwriting and then typing them in later, as I usually have to do. About 110 pages to photocopy at VPRO rates of 60 cents per page is out of my league. Having fun with the teachers, with a short break from indexing the "Non-Issued Probates and Admins" I'll have 1851-1908 of those finished some time next week, if I can use my SLR Digital on the school files and quickly return to the probates. I'm way behind because I lost the use of my "good" arm for over 6 months, but it is behaving itself slightly at the moment, so my one-handed typing has resumed and I can hold a pencil, too! I've told it to behave, I just won't put up with this slackness. Regards Ada Ada Ackerly. Hi Liz and others At the time you are asking about, I'm pretty sure it was a legal requirement for the jurors at an inquest to actually view the body as part of the proceedings. Needless to say, without refrigeration, the inquest was held as soon as possible after death, usually within 24 hrs. Cheers Tony Scott
Hello Liz, You'll probably get lots of answers on this one. Obviously this is an inquest on a body after an unexpected or unexplainable death, where the deceased was not being attended by the doctor. The local Coroner would have examined the body prior to the inquest, and the jurors would have to view the body prior to listening to the evidence proffered, and make a judgement. Accidental death? Violence? poisoning? drowning? etc. They were, of course, greatly assisted by the coroner's report and the evidence of witnesses. It was quite common to hold inquests in hotels, and if the town had no morgue, it was one of the stipulations when you took out a publican's licence, that you would store a body in your cellar prior to the inquest. In Williamstown, prior to the building of the morgue, local hotels took it in turn to be the one who tempoarily lost custom of the living! Regards Ada Ada Ackerly.
