    3. Hi Linda, Unfortunately the City of Greater Geelong has a bad habit of restructuring their web site and forgetting that people actually have links to them! http://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/Services_In_Geelong/Archives/ At least that one works for the moment. 3. Following a recent enquiry I located this website for the australian society of archivists which may interest some. It has links to many archives for businesses such as banks, churches, government, private bodies like hospitals, schools etc. And a search per state with keywords. Some of you may know of it but for those who dont its well worth a look http://www.archivists.org.au/directory-of-archives but the geelong heritage centre link to their own website did not work. 1. [GEELONG] Apologies for not clipping messages in replies
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Folks, I've had a complaint from one our of list members about people not clipping messages when they reply - meaning messages are larger than they should be and requiring people to scroll through information they have already read. I must confess I hadn't noticed - been rather busy (what's new?) and thought I'd better check recent messages to see if it really was a problem. Well, egg on my face as I seem to be the main culprit in recent times - I DID say I'd been busy and was quickly replying to emails without thinking about the basics of computer / email netiquette. I'm really sorry folks for clogging up the mailing list with repeated text in messages and not taking the time to clip the extra - I'll try to slow down in my replies and clip the extra text BEFORE hitting the send button. See - I SAID I wasn't perfect! <vbg> Regards ............... Susie Z

    3. Chris, you may be interested in this too. Frederick George Dent born geelong and Elizabeth Collins born bath (this is all thats on the index could be bath in uk or shortened ie bathurst etc ) married 1882 reg 5108 Also a possible birth for Frederick George Dent son of fredk and catherine Plows at geelong 1859 reg 2788 and one for a Frederick Dent born to Frederic and Cath 1852 born at geelong reg no 23053 christ church geelong denomination church of england fiche no 342. Then a death for frederick dent son of frederick aged 4 months geelong 1853 christ church fiche 361 reg 24561 Frederick Dent married Cath Plows 1851 reg 23589 church of england christ church geelong fiche 350 If this is the family there are some other listings for their children too if you would like. And a possible death for frederick senior. Frederick Dent died parents unknown aged 65 belmont 1888 reg 1703 hope it helps linda PS Not sure if you already mey know this but these indexes are available free to search at many local libraries, I use eastern region, it has family history sections in lilydale, ringwood and knox. It pays to call them and book a computer but does not cost anything unless you print out pages. They also have a lot of fiches and other records which may help your aunt fill in pieces, such as post office directories and newspaper indexes on fiche. They have a good handout of what is available and which library has it. Also some info on their website about what they hold www.erl.vic.gov.au I am sure nunawading and box hill also have quite a few records. . http://www.wev.vic.gov.au/Page/page.asp?Page_Id=109&h=1 is their website re genealogy. Seems doncaster has a lot of their info but they have a brochure you can download on what is where. Not that I or other people mind doing lookups for others, that is the great thing about genealogy, everyones is usually very helpful. But sometimes its exciting to find the pieces yourself. hope it helps Linda :)

    3. Hello Chris, I presume you're trying multiple times because you haven't had a response. The reason you probably haven't had a response: 1. Rootsweb does NOT encourage cross-posting - especially the same request to 3 different rootsweb Mailing Lists 2. A please or thank you rather than just a subject line might encourage (or not) some response 3. A little more information rather than a global lookup for a SURNAME - you're asking someone to check potentially at least 6 different CDs. Perhaps you should narrow your request, make it a little more specific, post to ONE rootsweb mailing list only, and be a little more personal / polite with your request. Regards .............. 3. Thanks for your help, Susie. I did see Paywit on the list but the misspellt one looked a bit like Parvil and the one under Marcus Hill looked a bit like Gay something and the other looked like Paritz (a very exuberant y), so I didn't even see that they were all the one word. I just needed someone who'd be able to look at it and go, "oh, that's such-and-such", which is what you've done. So thank you very much for your help. I have looked at the indexes on your site, so I know you've got Foulds records unfortunately at the moment if it isn't online it might as well be on the moon - I live in Canberra so in theory have easy access to family history documents by the truckload but in practice I have a 3 year old. So I'm just getting what I can online for now and just biding my time. 3. Hi Linda, Sorry to take so long to reply - car repairs to be done, visitors to collect and entertain, etc. Re the props, backgrounds, and clothing in old colonial photos, it is my understanding that the backgrounds for "studio" photos were portable, often painted backdrops, such as would be used in the theatre. There were a few special pieces of furniture, eg chair, table, plant stand, etc. I believe that the photographer would have some pieces of clothing to loan the client if necessary, eg a jacket, to give the impression of a successful life in the colonies for photos sent "back home".
