Good Morning List, I'm trying to find out some details of the life of James Gottlieb AVAGE. He was born in Prussia on 17 March 1841 and arrived in Victoria on the Wilhelmsburg in August 1853 as Gottlieb AWEGE. He appears to have travelled with a relatives Wilhelm & Maria Elizabeth EINSPORN nee AWEGE. In 1862 Maria & Wilhelm had a child of their own born at Jan Juc just out of Torquay. Around 1861 he was in Bendigo and by this time may have adopted the Christian name of James to anglicise his Prussian name. He stayed in Bendigo for about 5 years but I have no knowledge of his residence or work or life in Bendigo. He could have been known by any of the above spellings of his surname. About 1866 he moved to Miners Rest & Ballarat where he married and raised a family. He became naturalised in 1915 and died in 1924 and is buried in the Ballarat Cemetery. I have the birth details of his children. I have seen his occupation listed as a labourer, a green grocer and a gardener. While in Ballarat he lived at Wendouree in Howitt Street on the corner of Dowling Street. The house was demolished years ago. I am particularly interested in his life in Geelong & Bendigo prior to his marriage in Ballarat in 1868. Regards, Chris in Adelaide
Perhaps you already know but, if not, the Argus opened an office in Geelong and were publishing ads from people in the area, covering everything from horse auctions to rewards for the return of children (taken by the mother). http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/search?searchTerm=%22argus+office+geelong%22 And, dammit, it's a real trap for me and my OCD! Cheers Barbara
Hi Folks, This one is FAR TOO IMPORTANT to let it languish in the list I've just sent you. Geelong District: Geelong Advertiser - GOLD SHIPMENTS, 1851-1854 12 December 1851 - a list of names was published in the Geelong Advertiser - people petitioning for a public meeting with regard to the fixing of a license fee for gold digging 1851-1854 Geelong Advertiser gold lists appeared irregularly. The people listed sent gold by escort from the goldfields (Ballarat, Creswick, Mt Alexander etc.) to Geelong. Information contained in the newspaper includes the name of the consignee and the amount of gold or money being despatched. There are 6,624 entries in this index! WARNING: Spelling of surnames was quite creative so be creative with your search - or probably better, browsing. Have fun ............... Susie Z

I have several PATERSON family that went to the Geelong area in the 1850s from Edinburgh. They were Jane/Jean PATERSON (1820-1910) who emigrated with her husband Peter FINNIE (1819-1894), not sure when. Both are buried in Geelong Eastern Cemetery. They had 2 children, Margaret Jane and John Lawson The other Paterson family was Jane's brother John PATERSON (1825-1897) who married Isabella VENTERS (1840-1897) in Geelong in 1869. Both are buried in Geelong Eastern Cemetery. John and Isabella had 6 children, Euphemia Young, Margaret Lawson,John Lawson, Robert Venters, Annie Venters and George James. Yet another PATERSON family member was another brother of Jane & John who was Hugh (1829-1879) supposedly a tinsmith in the Geelong area. Don't think he married. I would like know if there is any way I can find these people in local Geelong directories and also any information I can find to add "flesh to bones " of these families and any available shipping records I can access to find when the PATERSONS emigrated to Australia. Duneed is a Parish in the State of Victoria, County Grant, Land District of Geelong. Its boundaries are: to the North, Waurn Ponds Creek; to the East, Surf Coast Highway; to the South, Thompsons Creek; to the West, Hendy Main Road. Over time, it has been associated with all or part of a number of localities, such as Waurn Ponds, Grovedale, Mount Duneed, Freshwater Creek, Pettavel, Moriac, Mount Moriac. These localities have rather loose boundaries and most spill over into surrounding Parishes. The actual land feature of Mount Moriac is in the Parish of Modewarre, just West of Hendy Main Road. There is a cemetery in the extreme NW corner of the Parish (on Reservoir Rd., near Hendy Main Road) which was originally known as the Duneed cemetery. However in 1864 another cemetery was established near the summit of Mount Duneed and, to avoid confusion, the Duneed cemetery was re-named the Mount Moriac cemetery. Old habits died hard and for some time thereafter, someone nominated as being buried in the "Duneed" cemetery could have been in either ! The Parish name has never changed. Duneed / Dunneet is thought to be an Australian Aboriginal word, but I have been unable to find a meaning for it. As far as I can determine, there is no such name in the UK. Victorian place names database from DSE which includes many sources including Les Blake's work mentions the locality or town of Mt Moriac & Duneed as both being at 144.189 East & 38.212 South. It mentions that before 1864 Mt Moriac town or locality (NOT parish) was known as Duneed. I feel sure this has a Scottish origin as indicated by John Sebire. There are a number of other Dun...... towns around. My Gaelic dictionary gives the meaning of Dun as "heap, mountain, fortress or fortification" which is near enough to John's "circular earthen mound" I'm confident the person who named the town and/or the parish (whichever came first) was of Scottish origin. I can't for a moment accept that the origin was indigenous.
