Hi List, re Laura Dandy (daughter of Abel Blades MILLARD and Frances SKELTON) in Melissa's query - there is a family plot at the Bambra/Boonah cemetery (near Deans Marsh, Vic.), with Dandy, Swayn and McCoombe headstones all together in a fenced plot. I have photos, if you wish to receive offline. Don't know if this is of any help to your query or not. The Millard family lived in the Deans Marsh area and descendants still live there today. Three of Laura Dandy's siblings are buried at Whoorel (near Birregurra) cemtery - sister, Annie Doris Millard d. 1974, Harry Abel Millard d. 1965 and Matthew Russell Millard d. 1974. Details are - 4 headstones together in fenced plot at Bambra/Boonah cemetery, from left to right, 1. DANDY (only surname on concrete, flat grave), 2. Samuel McCoombe d. 10.4.1879, 6 years, 3. James Alfred Swayn d. 9.5.1950 and Sarah Swayn (husb. of James Alfred), d. 15.8.1942, 85 yrs. and son, James Swayn d. 1906, 21 yrs., 4. Thomas McCoombe d. 17.6.1907 and his wife Elizabeth McCoombe d. 21.6.1908, 74 yrs. (Both parents of Samuel McCoombe - No. 2). Sarah Ann Swayn was a daughter of Thomas McCoombe and Bessie Woods. Sarah d. Birregurra, 1942, 86 yrs. R/N. 26989. Laura MILLARD m. William Ernest DANDY. m. 1915. R/N. 199. Hope some of this info may help. All I have found for her is a death in 1977 aged 88 yrs in Geelong. Parents listed in Digger Disc as being Millard Abel B DANDY & Frances SKELTON. My guess to date is that she may have been buried in Darlington as I found no mention of her in the Geelong Cemeteries. It appear she did not marry but had a daughter Phyliss in 1923. Melissa
Melissa Laura and Wm Ernest Dandy appear in several electoral rolls on ancestry, if you want the info let me know but htink you have access from what you wrote. At neerim and down western district way. If she doesnt appear on burials try cremations at faulker or springvale. they were operating about then not sure there were any more locally, also try local papers then for death notices. It often has more details. hope it helps Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: "BJ MJ Hallyburton" <hallyburton1@bigpond.com> To: <aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2009 8:11 AM Subject: [GEELONG] Watson family research > Good morning Listers, > > > > I am hoping SKS might be able to push me in the right direction. Hi Found her marriage in 1915 to William Ernest Dandy # 199. No births to the couple up to 1920. SO Phyllis was a legitimate child. William Ernest DANDYdied in Colac in 1955 #18358. parents were Durham Dandy and Eliza McCoombe. This family shows up prominately in the DANDY entries in the Victorian Indexes. there are at least 3 more siblings in the deaths 1921-1985. I would use the online resource outlined in an earlier reply and purchase the death certificates at the very least. As to her burial it may be in Colac with her husband. Her MIL, Eliza Dandy nee McCoombe, died in Geelong 1926. regards Robyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "BJ MJ Hallyburton" <hallyburton1@bigpond.com> To: <aus-vic-geelong-district@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2009 8:11 AM Subject: [GEELONG] Watson family research > Good morning Listers, > > > > I am hoping SKS might be able to push me in the right direction. Hi Melissa, Hector and Kate's marriage certificate will have a lot of detail, including her parents, mother's maiden name, birthplace etc. You can access it online at https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria but it costs $17.50 to download a copy of a certificate. I''ve found the cost to be well worth it in the past though! Good morning Listers, I am hoping SKS might be able to push me in the right direction. I am helping a cousin to research her side of the family and to date I have been able to find the following data: Hector Norman WATSON married Kate SADLER 1916 Hector died 1968 in Darlington, Victoria, aged 75 yrs (although Ancestory.com has it Darlington and the Digger Disc has it listed as Camperdown). I have no dates for Kate for anything. Hector's parents I've found to be Walter James Watson and Maris Caroline CLARKE I have found Hector listed in the Elector Rolls in 1919, 1924, 1931 and 1936. 1919 he was in Gnotuk and a Dairyman. In 1924, 31 and 36 he was in Darlington, a Mail Contractor. Kate was listed with him each time as Home Duties. I also found in the last 2 a mention of Maria Caroline WATSON also as Home Duties. This does not tell me if Caroline was living with Hector & Kate, or on her own. I am guessing because I could find no mention of Walter Watson he may have already died. Also we are trying to find a Laura Dandy. This is the end of what I have been able to research and am hoping SKS might be of assistance to us with any more information or where we can look next. Thank you all in advance, Have a good weekend, Melissa

No idea. Change of plans perhaps? Father was a scissorsmith - thought there might be better opportunities in Sheffield? The children had been born (c.1815-1830) in, or near, Templemore, Tipperary, site of the largest military barracks in Ireland - perhaps influenced by English soldiers? I had wondered if he had been a British soldier and stayed in Ireland after his discharge. But I'm not even sure they could do that. Might have also been a family tug-o-war. The mother had died and her sister (my g-g-g-granny) who had come here in 1855 (passage paid for by her two Famine Orphan daughters already here), seemed fairly determined to gather together her sister's brood. Her name and address is given on all the shipping doc entries. Haven't been able to pick up any sign of the family in 1851 English Census (making full use of wildcards and blank fields). And one of the sons married in Templemore 1853. A daughter married (in Sheffield) a guy who came from Borrisokane, where a couple of her siblings were baptised, so it looks as though the connection with Templemore was fairly strong; I'm inclined to think that the family had been there from around 1815 to the early 1850's. A whatsit-cousin has been to Ireland three times searching out records and registers and has done an amazing job of piecing our family together.

Aahh, yes ... the spelling! And the accent. And the fact that so many people couldn't read or write. My g-g-grandfather shows on the shipping list to Australia as John Henfield, and married as Hemfil - the nine children registered in NSW as Hemfield, Hemfil, Heniful, Hempfield. His brother and sister followed him a year later as Enfield. And stuck to that name. The connection only picked up because his wife had a baby whose birth and death was registered by my g-g-grandmother (who was also John's first cousin), under the name of Hemfil. Family was from Tipperary and around 1850 made their way to Sheffield, before moving on to Australia. But the father died there, as Hemfrey, and one son stayed in England, mainly as Hemfield, but with the odd variation here and there. On the bright side though, the three brothers and two sisters all used the same names for their large families, so the variations in surnames made it easier to track them. It would be nice, though, to know what the 'real' name was. Cheers Barbara
I have to wonder if your Sharp /Smart is not a transcription or pronounciation error too. its very similar .Could they read and write? Interesting this change of name came up this week, when I too am battling with a possible change of name from Oakley to Allen in uk, I have found someone in another family who changed his nchristian ame from jonas to james, and found his father also jonas in debtors prison about the time of the name change, was this to avoid possible problems in confusing the two of them. Have yet to find any reason why this last change occurred but they did move counties at same time and it seems there was no legal requirement in 1800's in uk to record name changes. After years of searching it only came to light using a christian name search of census records with just christian name of siblings, date and place of birth. But without evidence its really hard to prove its the same family. Uk certificates dont list mothers names except for birth. I know this is not in itself geelong related but if anyone has any ideas love to hear them if you reply direct and if you have a family you can only find in one or two census' then try a few searches without surname you may be surprised with what you find. So good luck. Linda
Hello Patricia, Many years ago I helped a young couple who appeared to have an identical problem.I can't remember the names: I was researching something else when they told me of their problem at the Victorian PRO search room at Laverton. The difference was, that they had a family story that the father had accidentally caused the death of another, and fled and changed his name. They did not know his original name, so could not find births of the first four children, nor the marriage of the parents We solved that one by searching the Victorian Police Gazette from the birth of the fourth child until the birth of the fifth (new surname) child. We searched for (usually on the front page of the fortnightly produced bulletin) "Wanted for murder". We did find an entry for the time and followed the notice through several issues. The clincher was: "Thought to be travelling with wife and four children." We took the name to the (then) microfiche index of births, and there were the children, as named. Bingo. In those days one could not search by "mother's name",(no CDs) which these days would easily find the previous family and name, but would mean you would not have the "Victoria Police Gazette" information, only the puzzle of changed names Just a thought. Hello list, I have a SHARP Robert born 1846 Scotland. Parents SHARP James and Charlotte (nee HOWIE) Robert married WALTON Mary Ann at Christ Church, Geelong 1866. Four children were born in Geelong between 1866 and 1872. Then this family pops again in Sandridge( Port Melbourne) with a further 4 children being born under the name of SMART to Robert and Mary Ann WALTON Is there anyway I can find out why the name change, is it due to having to move from Geelong quickly for some reason and changing his name.? Robert and Mary Ann died as SMART in 1887 and 1888, in Port Melbourne. Buried at Melbourne Cemetery under the name of SMART. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Pat
