    3. Hello David, I have no concerns at all about the 1GB limit for free groups. That diskspace DOES NOT include messages - only photos, files, databases - all sorts of features we never had at Rootsweb. I have set the disk space to alert me if we have used 80% and also have it set to delete oldest images etc. I can also choose to delete specific images, files etc. if there are some I don't want deleted. At this stage I have allowed attachments or images - particularly useful when you're trying to give a screen dump or similar. Once something is solved or 'history' I may just delete it. I had also set the max size for images and if things get out of hand I can stop images / attachments. as I said - don't see a problem and groups.io provides us with an incredible flexibility for replacing the Rootsweb Mailing List. I personally prefer to reply to messages etc online which enables you to view ALL messages in the thread. And nothing better than not having to remember to send messages in Plain Text - ancient history! Regards ... 3. Hi Susie Thanks for creating AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT on groups.io. I am now registered. The only thing concerning me for all the new groups, is that it seems that groups have a limit of 1GByte for free, then there is a charge. With the new group structure the messages seem to be a lot shorter, with fewer message history sections. Has anyone calculated how much space was used on rootsweb for AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT (and other high usage greoups)? How long before the group.io 1GByte limit may be reached? If it's years there is probably no current concern about how to pay the premium. Again Thanks Susie David > Date: Sun, 12 Jan 2020 18:54:48 +1100 > From: Susie Zada <susie.zada@gmail.com> > Subject: [GEELONG] New Mailing List open for business > To: "AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT@rootsweb.com" > <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID: > <CAKyDBVeRA7DV12h-R90vMUTGR-ZHZ07uXbA9Oa=cTXAWnBp21A@mail.gmail.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" > > Hi Folks, > > I think we now have more than enough subscribers to make it worthwhile for > conversations on this new Mailing List. > Enjoy this new software - I think you're going to find it fun to use. > > If you have friends who would like to join the AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT > Mailing List: > > > - If they weren't on the Rootsweb AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT Mailing List > they wouldn't have received an invitation > - They can follow the Step-by-step procedures at > https://vafho.com/aus-vic-mailing-list/ - NOTE these procedures are for > the AUS-VIC Mailing List - just substitute AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT for > AUS-VIC and they work fine, or > - You can send a message to me at GROUP ADMIN > <AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT+owner@groups.io> > > Enjoy our new Mailing List. > > I've had so much fun setting up something in DATABASES on the new list that > might be useful for members - click on the DATABASES link in the menu on > the left - have a GOOD look around and take note - if you have another > Organisation that you think qualifies to be in this list, just reply to me > and let me know! - NOTE this is ONLY on the new list software. > > I have to confess I'm really enjoying this new platform for our Mailing > Lists. > > Regards ... I have tested it and it is now working well. By sending invitations you will have the choice of subscribing or not - but remember the Rootsweb list is ending at the beginning of March. Regards ... 2. Susie Zada
    3. With the end of Rootsweb Mailing Lists in March 2020 (yes this year) I wanted to make sure that people on my Mailing Lists had some follow-up contacts while we look at the options. For AUS-VIC@rootsweb.com, AUS-VIC-GEELONG-DISTRICT@rootsweb.com, AUS-VIC-BELLARINE-PENINSULA@rootsweb.com 1. VAFHO (Victorian Association for Family History Organisations) will be looking at any viable alternatives. Currently looking at Mailman - the GNU Mailing List Manager. As VAFHO is a non-profit volunteer organisation run by Volunteers we need to be cautious at committing to external costs but this may be a viable alternative. If you have other constructive suggestions, please contact me on vafhov@gmail.com 2. VAFHO helped work with the Victorian BDMs in February 2019 when there were some issues affecting all of us in Victoria. The closure of the Rootsweb Mailing Lists is another area that VAFHO believes we should help our Victorian researchers. I spoke with the VAFHO President this morning who agrees with these sentiments. 3. You should subscribe to the VAFHO Blog - that is where we announce anything important related to Victorian Family or Local History, particularly things associated with Victorian BDMs etc. There is NO COST to subscribe. See https://vafho.com/ 4. VAFHO also has a Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/VAFHO-Victorian-Association-of-Family-History-Organisations-853001631548704/ or just search for VAFHO on Facebook 5. Don't rush out and start Facebook Pages to replace Rootsweb Mailing Lists - there are already numerous Facebook Pages doing the same as the equivalent Rootsweb Mailing List and we don't want to re-invent the wheel particularly when there may be local Family History or Local History Groups with a Facebook Page. Remember they are volunteers also and we don't want to damage all the hard work they've already done. 6. If you are comfortable using Facebook, have a look at the Victoria AU Family History Facebook Page - they are really helpful ... https://www.facebook.com/groups/650071871717390/ or just search for VICTORIA AU Family History in Facebook. You can then JOIN that page and participate. 7. And finally remember the wonderful community spirit that has been such an important part of our Rootsweb Mailing Lists. Let's use that spirit to continue to help those with questions to ask. 8. You might want to print out this page for future reference when you have a chance to clear your head and decide what you want to do. Regards ... Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. From her death on the Vic BDM it say’s that her mum was Margaret BOURKE (Burke) and father Daniel KEANE. I have just received this death certificate and it was NOT helpful re children of marriage!! She was married to ALEXANDER CUNNINGHAM( in 1864) He was admitted to the Ararat Lunatic Asylum in 1871? Both the children of Alexander and Honorah were placed in St. JOSEPH’S Abbotsford in 1871. They are CATHERINE M CUNNINGHAM B July 1867 in CHATSWORTH and her sister ELIZABETH A CUNNINGHAM born 12th July 1865. Both girls were listed as “neglected” on admission. Honora was receiving aid from the (Ararat?) Benevolent Asylum/Society. On 19.9.1892 CATHERINE CUNNINGHAM was discharged to Mother in Geelong. Anyway of finding any more information particularly on Catherine CUNNINGHAM as I am trying to link her up to a marriage to CHARLES FREDERICK HALLGREN IN 1897 Vic with UNTRACEABLE parents listed for her as Patrick and/or Michael CUNNINGHAM and Mary McQuire/McGuire. Any clues or hints would be great as to how to find out more about the movements of CATHERINE M. CUNNINGHAM {1882-onwards} Kind regards Dianna from Sydney

    3. Memorial Service for Dr Joan Elizabeth HUNT The Memorial Service for Joan Hunt will be held this Thursday 20th September at 12 noon at the Ballarat Mechanics Institute, 117 Sturt Street, Ballarat. BRING YOUR SOCIETY'S BANNER This suggestion has been put to Gary and his response was "yes most definitely". It will be a wonderful way of showing just how much Joan helped groups around our State. If you know of any group that won't be at the Memorial Service but they have a banner, ask if you can take their banner. It would be great if we can have as many banners as possible displayed around the room at the Memorial Service. Regards ... Susie Zada
