    3. Oh dear - how caught up with new toys we become. I had overlooked the obvious - and this is not the first time. Last occasion (different matter) a lister suggested 'write them a letter'. Thank you Robert Cheers, Nandina ---------- > Hi, > the sasafras bowling club is still going - not on the original site in > ferny Creek - but in Sassafras - perhaps you could just ring them up - I'm > sure they would be in the phone book - > > good luck > Robert > > > > > At , you wrote: > >Hi, > > > >my gr'fa, Garrett John RUSSELL was Founder of the above bowling club/s, > according to his obit. > >I know in many such clubs there will be an honour board of sorts, listing > past people, and hoped this club may have some records of him preserved in > some way. 3. Hello - hope you don't all subscribe to all the Aus lists - you'll read this more than one, sorry about that. My Gr'fa lived in Sassafras for some years between 1925ish and 1939ish. He held the titles mention in the subject line, according to his obit, 1949. I have surmised, perhaps erroneously that this activity may have been related to the time of his residence in Sassafras. I am also of the opinion that these were local and honarary titles, possibly inflated by well-meaning family mebers to journos preparing the obit for print. Anyway, I'm looking to expand on his life and daily doings for our family history, and would like to investigate these activities a little further. (I do know that he knew the name of each and every bird in Wattle Park when he moved to Burwood and took this curly haired little moppet walking with him - and I do mean given names, not species only <g>). Can anyone suggest a starting point? His name was Garrett John RUSSELL. He lived in a cottage called "The Ranche". Cheers, Nandina

    3. Thanks Robert, but a tad late for me. I used the 'reply to author' button, and was mortified to see my home address there on the screen for everyone to see. Just hope that no unscrupulous persons seek to take advantage of those who did respod immediately, without the benefit of Faye's own email addy. 3. Hi, my gr'fa, Garrett John RUSSELL was Founder of the above bowling club/s, according to his obit. I know in many such clubs there will be an honour board of sorts, listing past people, and hoped this club may have some records of him preserved in some way. Is there someone out there who can point me to the correct people? Cheers, Nandina

    1. [AUS-VIC-DANDENONG-RANGES] Vic: Boulter Olinda Swimming Pool Second time around.
    2. robert.j
    3. A year and a half ago I was looking for some background info on anybody who was in the Dandenong Ranges district back in the 1960s who may have names of the committee members and others that were involved with the construction of the Olinda Swimming Pool. In April last year when I last wrote for help I had no idea that the pool's future was in so much doubt. The pool is now closed and the need to gather historical information is still important. Please help, thankyou. Here's the post of last year: Hi all, I'm slowly trying to put together a little history on the Olinda pool, to better understand the social environment that existed in the Dandenongs in the 1960s. I know that the pool came about following fund raising and community discussions mainly organised by the Dandenongs Fire Prevention Committee, a group set up after the devastating bushfires of January 1962. At one time, hills resident Roy Boulter was chairman of the committee. Further info on Roy Boulter would be most welcome. Would anybody know the names of any other office bearers? Do any readers recall the public meetings? Would any readers care to share photographs of the Olinda Pool not necessarily from the mid 60s but from any era? The Olinda Pool was officially opened in late December 1964, so it has a 50th anniversary coming up. The Yarra Yanges council keep trying to close it down, so far residents have managed to prevent this - but for how much longer I wonder? Will the Olinda Pool still be operating in 2 and a half years? If you have any pictures or stories please share them. There are some news clippings available at this facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/SaveTheOlindaPool where I guess you could post your pictures. thanking you robert

I was mistaken when I wrote Boulter - I was thinking of another prominent family. I'm actually after info about Roy BUTLER. Sorry for any confusion. Please accept my apologies, robert

    1. [AUS-VIC-DANDENONG-RANGES] Remembering Racing Car driver and aviator Ron Flockhart killed 50 years ago.
    2. robert.j
    3. On the eve of another Melbourne Grand Prix it may be worthwhile to reflect on the life and death of Ron Flockhart, champion racing car driver and aviator. 50 years ago, in April 1962, Flockhart took off from Moorabbin airport in the Mustang plane that he intended to use to set a speed record from Sydney to London. About 10 minutes after leaving Moorabbin, Flockhart found himself in thick fog, with faulty instruments and controls, somewhere over the Dandenongs. The Mustang crashed into a Kallista hillside, killing Flockhart. Reports suggest that Flockhart had no chance to activate his parachute. His body may have been found still strapped to his seat. There have been atleast 3 fatal air crashes in the Dandenongs. In 1938, the DC3 commercial air-liner, Kyeema crashed at Mt Dandenong. In April 1962, Flockhart crashed his Mustang at Kallista. And about 20 years later, in January 1982, a Piper Cherokee crashed into the One Tree Hill ridge at Ferny Creek, killing the pilot. In all cases it appears that heavy fog may have existed at the time of the crash. Readers are invited to share their own recollections, if any, of these events. Perhaps some reader was nearby when Flockhart crashed into Kallista? Or maybe somebody recalls the events of the 1982 Ferny creek crash.. A wikispaces page has been started at this address, http://historic-dandenongs.wikispaces.com/ron+flockhart with a couple of pictures of Flockhart's Mustangs. RIP Ron Flockhart. thanking you..

    3. When Robert Singleton, prominent hills resident, and one-time resident of the Haverbrack property, Malvern, passed away, details of his will were widely reported: The West Australian Friday 22 May 1914 TESTATOR'S INSTRUCTIONS NO CLERGYMAN, NO FLOWERS, NO MOURNING. Melbourne, May 21. Unusual provision is contained in the will of the late Robert Singleton, of Mount Dandenong, retired civil servant, which was lodged for probate to-day. Singleton, who died on February 22, was for many years accountant to the Railway Department. He left real estate valued at £10,927, and personal property valued at £2,949, to his widow and children. One clause of the will reads: -"I desire my funeral to be of the most simple and inexpensive description, that my body be deposited in the family vault in the Melbourne Cemetery, that no clergyman officiate at my funeral. There is to be no funeral service, no wreaths or flowers, and the members of my family shall on no ac count wear mourning for me." source: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/26905947?

    1. [AUS-VIC-DANDENONG-RANGES] Ferntree Gully Shire attempts to increase enlistments in WW1, 1916
    2. robert.j
    3. Some may be interested to learn a little of the coersion used to get council workers enlisted in the Great War. regards robert.. From The Boxhill Reporter Friday 24 March 1916 RECRUITING IN FERN TREE GULLY SHIRE. DRASTIC METHODS EMPLOYED. At the meeting of Fern Tree Gully council on Saturday, March 18, a letter was read from the Ferny Creek progress association, urging that reconsideration be given to the dismissal of Frank Laube, as he is a married man and a ratepayer, and had had a long experience of working at the crusher. -The president (Cr. Kerr) explained that the dismissal in question was brought about in consequence of him having instructed the engineer to get all the workmen employed by the council to sign a statutory declaration that their parents were not of alien origin, but this man had refused to do so. -At the request of several members, the declaration was read out, and embodied a provision that the parentage of the man who signed was neither German, Austrian, or Turkish. -Cr. Mahony complained that Laube could not sign the declaration, though he himself was Australian born, therefore it was very hard on a man like him. -Cr. Chandler also contended it was rather drastic action, because if they signed the declaration they would be perjuring themselves. They may have volunteered, and been rejected. Was it fair for such men to be turned down? -The action of the president was endorsed on the motion of Crs. Monk and Gilmour. Subsequently during the meeting Cr. Monk moved that every eligible man in the council's employ, with the exception of the secretary, whom they could not do without, be given 14 days' notice to go and offer his services to his country, and failing the production of a reject certificate, he be dismissed at next meeting. Men were working on the council's crusher, Cr. Monk added, who had treated the recruiting sergeant with contempt. -The president pointed out that this matter was being dealt with by the recruiting committee. -Cr. Earney seconded the motion. - Cr. Chandler: You are going to hold us up as a laughing stock by exempting the secretary, as there are plenty of men who can fill that position. Not that he should go, but there are others with sacred obligations who should be considered, such as married men and loyal subjects. -President Kerr also opposed the motion, as the public would at once say they were acting on certain information obtained as members of the recruiting committee.- -The motion was amended by striking out the exemption alluded to, and was then carried, the president, and Crs. Sel man, Taylor, and Nugent voting against. source: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/75165125?

    1. [AUS-VIC-DANDENONG-RANGES] Gutmann, Fenton - gunner/soldiers farewelled at Olinda 1914...
    2. robert.j
    3. Hi everybody, I haven't been doing much about the local history in the Dandenongs lately - but thought I'd dip the toe into www.trove.nla.gov.au and discovered that the Box hill Reporter has been digitised and has some reports that may help researchers - here's something that may help some readers? From the Box Hill newspaper "Reporter" Friday 11 September 1914 http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/75091405? --------------------------------------------------------------------- OLINDA NEWS. On Saturday night, September 5, an enthusiastic send-off was tendered to Howard Gutmann and Clarence Fenton, who are leaving for the war in Europe with the Australian expeditionary force. The dancing was thoroughly enjoyed, there being an eagerness on every lady's part to be partners to the gunner boys, whose coolness augers well for their immediate future. During an interval Mr. Boulter made a presentation to each man on behalf of the Olinda residents and stated the feelings of the people quite correctly when he said that all were proud of their representatives, and wished them God- speed and a safe return. Mr. O'Farrell, on behalf of the football club, and Mr. Devine, for the ladies' patriotic fund committeo, also presented suitable gifts for use en-route to the war. Both gentlemen made intensely patriotic speeches, and were applauded, as were also Mr. Millward and Mr. J. Dodd, who said "Au revoir" on behalf of the progress association. As Olinda's oldest inhabitant, Mr. Dodd spoke very feelingly, and hoped they would soon meet again to give them a bumper welcome home. The audience cheered vociferously when Mr. J. Foster, bearing his Boer war medals, finished up the speeches with some sound soldierly advice. God Save the King closed the proceedings. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It is good to see that the residents of Olinda weren't bothered by Howard Gutmann's germanic origins ... cheers and here's hoping for a safe and happy 2012..

    2. robert.j
    3. Just wondering whether any reader knows of a slaughter yard in Sassafras? It looks as though there were plans to build a piggery and slaughter yard in Sassafras in the 1920s - the location of the proposed enterprise is uncertain - described as being on Robert Hughes' property -which may have been located on the west side of the Mt D Tourist Rd north of Hilton Rd extending towards Sassafras?? It appears that there may have been some resistance to proposal - at least one person was moved to complain through The Argus.. The first many may have known about the proposal would have been when they read this advertisement: *It is my intention to APPLY at next meeting of council of Shire of Ferntree Gully for LICENSE to Slaughter Pigs and Calves, Boiling Down, and Piggeries, on Robert Hughes' property at Sassafras. WILLIAM CHARLES JONES. Sassafras.* (source: The Argus Thursday 9 March 1922) http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/4689269? But a Mr Burns wanted to fight the proposal: *SLAUGHTER YARDS AT. SASSAFRAS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS. Sir, In the advertising columns of this day's issue of "The Argus" appears notice of an application to the Ferntree Gully Council for a license to slaughter pigs and calves and open a boiling-down factory and piggery at Sassafras. The residents and ''week-enders" should get up a petition at once against such a proposal. It will mean the end of this beautiful, health-giving district if the council agree to grant a license for such an undertaking. L.E.BURNS 291 Burke road.
