Hello list, I am hoping that someone will be able to assist me to track down information about my ggg grandparents Robert and Eliza AITKEN (nee MURRAY) who were flour millers in Bacchus Marsh around the 1850s. My gg grandmother, Mary AITKEN, was born in Bacchus Marsh on 10 February 1859, other siblings unknown. Mary married William DOWNES who was a merchant in flour and similar products, so perhaps her father and future husband had business dealings and that is how they met. According to Mary's birth certificate her parents came from Scotland (possibly from Islay). Robert AITKEN was born about 1823, Elizabeth in 1829, and they were married in Scotland about 1848. A likely looking IGI record suggests they were married on 15 July 1848 at the High Church, Paisley, Renfrew. I am interested in finding out when they arrived in Australia and any business/directory information that may exist for them in Bacchus March. Also, any newspaper notices, such as obituaries (I do not know when either of them died). Liz Phillips Canberra elizabeth.phillips@dfat.gov.au
