Hello everyone, I have been searching for many years for ANY information on my mysterious Grandmother, Mabel ROBINSON. Mabel was born 5 Dec 1893 at Carlton Women's Hospital to Mary ROBINSON. (No father listed) Mary was listed on Nannas birth certificate as being aged 23 and born in Seymour. The only birth I can locate for Mary in the area and in the general time frame is for a Mary Jane ROBINSON, born to George and Mary Jane (nee JOHNSTON) ROBINSON in Mangalore in 1870. This Mary Jane married James Ernest SPEIRS in 1892, before my Nanna was born. Mary died in 1946 and her death certificate does not list Mabel as one of her children. My Grandmothers 1920 W.A marriage certificate states that her parents names were William Thomas ROBINSON and Mabel nee JOHNSON. Her parents were listed as both deceased on her marriage certificate and Nanna always said they were buried in Seymour. I can find absolutely no trace of these 2 anywhere, but the above Mary ROBINSONs parents were both dead by then (1908 & 1909). I tend to believe that Nanna may have been raised by her Grandparents or Aunt/Uncle as one of their own. My Nanna used to talk about living at 13 Emily St, Seymour as a child, but the Seymour Historical Soc says that the houses were not numbered until the 1940s. My Nanna was living in W.A by at least 1907 and I can find no trace of her supposed parents here either. The first record I can find for Mabel in WA is the Electoral Roll for Southern Cross, where she is listed as working as a domestic for Alexander and Harriet McKAY, of Hope Hill Farm. Alexander and Harriet were also the witnesses at Mabels wedding and Mabels illegitimate daughter was also born at their farm in 1916. I wonder if they may have been relatives? I have contacted the Anglican Church Wangaratta Diocesan Registry and they have no record of Nans Baptism in the area. Nanna was very secretive about her family, and apart from saying that she was an only child and lived in Emily St, Seymour, she said little else. The only one of her children that is surviving, is also very secretive and tells me to "stop trying to dig up dirt" whenever I ask about the family. Of course, this makes me even more determined to find out!<g> I hope you can understand this jumble and any help or advice would be VERY much appreciated!
