Barbara, If you know where he was living (roughly) it may be an idea to look up electoral rolls. As his name is not all that common you may be able to pick up another person living at the same address and make some deductions? Jenny
Hi Barbara, At the moment marriages have only been released to 1930. A new CD is due to be released at any moment which takes marriages up to 1940ish. Perhaps even 1945. I'm sure you'll see on the lists when someone takes delivery of one. Hopefully it won't be long! Best wishes, Jenny
Greetings List, My local research group only have records up until 1930 for Victorian BDM, and were unable to guide me as to where I may be able to locate a marriage, circa 1938. Would someone on the list be able to help me as to where this information may be held? I am searching for the marriage of Douglas Rex Thornber, my uncle - whom would have been married during the above years. Thank you, Regards Barbara Banar Wanora Qld

Hello Liz, I'm not sure if a listing of Wandong residents is going to help you except perhaps show someone by the name of NOLAN living in the area - your problem seems to be how does someone by the name of NOLAN connect into your family, however you don't mention the surname of the your family. I'd be inclined to say the first step is to find out if Catherine NOLAN is her unmarried name or her married name ............ I would actually be searching the Vic Marriages or births for a couple where he or the children have the surname of NOLAN and the mother's name is Catherine xxxxxx where xxxxx is your family name. Have you tried this option? Hope that helps ...... Liz you could try Wise's post office directories which are available on microfiche and your local library may be able to help if they have a research section or your local geni group may have them Derek > Hi All, > > I am new to this list and hopefully have the correct one. Hi All, I am new to this list and hopefully have the correct one. If not, please accept my apologies. I am interested to know if there would be any listing of residents of Wandong in 1889. I have a copy of a letter written by Catherine NOLAN of Wandong to her cousin [a great aunt of mine] who was living in outer Melbourne. My problem is that I cannot link the name of NOLAN with our family at this stage. If SKS can offer a suggestion, I would be most grateful. Liz Bairnsdale, Vic.
Dear List I am new to the list so would like to post my family names. William John BECKWITH and Eliza WALSH lived in Woodend from about 1857. They had a small property which I believe was in Braemar Rd (according to the notice in the paper after Eliza's death in 1926) I haven't been able to find the location of Braemar Rd. Can anyone help? I am also connected to the GAYNOR and FISHER families and also to the DUKE family. I'm interested to hear from anyone with connections to these families. Is/has anyone researched the O'CONNOR family descended from John (Jno) O'Connor who married Elizabeth Curran in Crusheen Co.Clare in 1855? John O'Connor died in Yea in 1891. We have recently got that far. Their children were: Mary, Catherine, Thomas, John, Daniel, Michael, Elizabeth, James (our ancestor) and Bridget. We would be delighted to hear from anyone with any information about the line. We will be visiting the Yea area around September 22nd for a couple of days, with a view to local research. James was our Grandfather, who married Mary Jane DAVIS in 1903. We understand that Mary Jane was born in Broadford in 1863. Mary Jane's parents were Thomas Davis and Eliza MCCHRYSTAL. Their children were Mary Jane, Annie Maria, Thomas Robert, Edward John, Eliza Hamilton, Francis William, Esther Sarah, Henry James, Wilfred Joseph, Violet Angelina. Hi again Janette, Thanks for your comments. Spent twenty minutes tonight looking for the book on military postal history; haven't worked out where I put it down last yet. I've put that on hold for the moment. The Australian War Museum has a more "general" front page than where I led you last night. http://www.awm.gov.au/database/nroll.asp has the rolls for the Sudan War, Boer War, Boxer Uprising, WW1, WW2 (the roll from last night) and the Gulf War. The Korean War, Malaysian Conflict and Vietnam aren't covered (don't know why). But, its all for free and well worth a look. Next, possibly fruitful site (also free) to go looking for families in Victoria, in particular, some from further afield, is http://www.firstfamilies2001.net.au/. Matching Surname SEE BELOW RESEARCHER PURCHASE, Edith FF MACKLEY, kathleen Mary PURCHASE, Harvey FF ARNEL, margaret ansley PURCHASE, Hervey FF WEEKS (NEE PURCHASE), diana PURCHASE, vera myrtle FF YUGOVICH, dianne This site can be a mixed bag, in that it was set up by the Victorian Govt to allow people to post their family trees to celebrate the Centenary of Federation in 2001. It has been shut down to further updates for about a year now, and some of the email addresses are now out of date. If people have changed their addresses (the concept here is you, for example, decide to change your internet service provider from dodo.com.au to wherever.com, on the basis that dodo costs you $50 a month but that wherever costs the same, but you get a free set of steakknives if you sign with wherever. Totally hypothetical scenario, not meant to denigrate either provider. The point is, once you change; you original address is replaced by something different. You now become jan45andahalf@whereever.com. No mail forwarding occurs from dodo. If the poster you're looking for has changed internet service provider, your challenge then is to find their new address. You can be lucky, sometimes they are still at the same address, or sometimes be lucky looking for "where they went", so its well worth a try. Having said that, at least two of the posters above should be of interest to you (if you don't already know them, that is) in that they mention the Rigought (not sure of spelling) surname of your original posting. Two further quick pieces of advice. 1.Make your first email short: "Hello, I'm Janette. Interested in the Purchase and Rigought families. Can we talk?". If you type out 327 pages and then find their email address no longer exists, you'll have wasted a lot of effort. 2. Etiquette on this and similar lists is to only quote the last message in a reply (unless there is compelling reason not to). So for this reply, Ive "chopped out" the first two or three "original messages" and only quoted the last. Many subscribers have only limited downloads per month; if they go over they get hit with extra fees, so short is sweet. Don't be alarmed, you haven't tread on anyone's toes. Everyone on this list tries to help and encourage newcomers. Hope this is of help, and good luck with your search. Hi Janette, (This isn't my family). ? your dad was born Euroa 2 Nov 1909. He's mentioned in the context of 9 AUST DIV POSTAL at http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/. Next of kin listed as Flora Purchase. (Sorry, just picked up on this; its eerie; my dad was with sixth Div Postal. I've got a book about the postmarks (that's my hobby; postmarks) used by the various Australian Forces Postal Units durig WW2. If this lead pans out let me know and I'll check there for any more info on where 9th Div was at various times). Anyway, I was about to suggest that the WW2 vets roll is a good place to start. Hi List Iam new at this, so I hope I get it right. I'm looking for as much imforation about my Fathers Family as I can find. His surname was Purchase. I can go back to a James Harvey Purchase born around 1826, but Idon't know where or when exactly. He married a Elizabeth Priscilla Rigought {not sure of spelling} & they had about 10 children I think. A lot of the names seem to be repeated,so I'm not sure exactly how many children they had. I do know that one of their sons was a Henry Purchase who was my ggrandfather born 1854. He married a Ruth Burden in about 1878 & they had 9 children before he died in 1898. Ruth remarried in 1901 to a Robert Sidebottom & they had a daughter Vera Sidebottom. My Grandfather was Robert Charles Purchase born 1882.He married a Laura Helen Waterson in 1908 & they had 5 children, the eldest being my father Henry William Purchase. I don;t know a lot about his siblings apart from their names & the years they were born. I'm hoping someone out theremay know ! something about any of the above Purchases. Regards Janette
