    2. Peter Lakeman
    3. Hello Trevor, Can't help you much except for some info from Vision & Realisation (Education Dept book which has histories of Vic schools). The book confirms that three schools operated at Rushworth during the period you are interested in. A National school operated from 1858 to 1870, a Presbyterian school operated from 1859 to 1872, and these were replaced by a state school in 1872. It doesn't say exactly where they were located, but that they served the mining community in the area. Of no use to you in Perth, but the Public Records Office in Melbourne would possibly be the best place for the old school records. 1. Robert and Eliza AITKEN of Bacchus Marsh
    2. Hello list, I am hoping that someone will be able to assist me to track down information about my ggg grandparents Robert and Eliza AITKEN (nee MURRAY) who were flour millers in Bacchus Marsh around the 1850s. My gg grandmother, Mary AITKEN, was born in Bacchus Marsh on 10 February 1859, other siblings unknown. Mary married William DOWNES who was a merchant in flour and similar products, so perhaps her father and future husband had business dealings and that is how they met. According to Mary's birth certificate her parents came from Scotland (possibly from Islay). Robert AITKEN was born about 1823, Elizabeth in 1829, and they were married in Scotland about 1848. A likely looking IGI record suggests they were married on 15 July 1848 at the High Church, Paisley, Renfrew. I am interested in finding out when they arrived in Australia and any business/directory information that may exist for them in Bacchus March. Also, any newspaper notices, such as obituaries (I do not know when either of them died). Liz Phillips Canberra elizabeth.phillips@dfat.gov.au

While in Galashiels, Scotland last week I came across grave for Catherine Elder married to Alexander Melrose. Their son William married Jane Slott Dobson, who died at Geelong Victoria 1926. William Melrose died at Geelong in 1947. Are there any family of the Melrose around? I'm researching the family name Elder. Any help welcome Bob Elder

    3. Hi Amanda, We've been in touch before about other things. Yes, St. Malachy's in Blackwood is still there (or at least it was a few years ago). I have a photo of it (not a really interesting looking church - weatherboard, fairly plain) which my cousin took around 1998-1999. Can email to you if you wish, but it's nothing startling. I don't think I have anything about its history.
